The HI

So here is what I'm going with so far......

Wood type: Quilted Maple
Heater type: SS
Bottom cap: yes but not sure what. Maybe just the Quilted to keep it uniform

I think all thats left are what stems to get.

My name will be up soon. I'm actually looking forward to using more flowers again. :leaf: I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. :)

Jeppy, how long has your 'second wait' been so far? I'm just curious (not in any rush). I finally told Alan to throw my name back on the 'ol list, late last month. I had been wanting to do so for a while, & simply couldn't resist after seeing the new cores as well as the slimmer body (I still use an OG HIsaber. For the experienced jedHI only! :myday: VVPS of course.)
Hope your holiday season is spent wielding your HIsaber with grace & dignity, my fellow JedHI Jeppy.

Sounds pretty sweet to me, but then again, that's along the lines of what I'll be ordering (soon):

Wood type: 'fancy' Maple
Heater type: SS or HIbrid
Bottom cap: gonna go with the same wood

Why'd you go for SS? I'm drawn to that for it's extraction performance.

I like to have the option of very dark abv and I believe the SS heater gets a little hotter. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yep, that's what Alan said. It is hotter and you can take the ABV to very dark. The glass core produces less dense vapor. The draw and roast is a little slower with the glass core.

The HIbrid apparently gets the ABV about the same darkness as with the ss core. Alan's recent post about the HIbrid had me thinking this might be a good in-between choice. I like this bit "The taste is close to as good as the all glass core but can get much faster extraction." I'm not sure why the air flow is the worst of the 3 though.

It's tough. My priorities are always. 1. Extraction. 2. Taste. Hence I'm leaning ss or HIbrid. The other differences I probably won't understand unless I have first-hand knowledge.

Madcap, yep I too need to research stem choices.

The ss HI extraction efficiency is very impressive. Successfully straddling the line between high extraction and combustion demands a deft touch, but once there you can quickly pull several big rips from a small amount, leaving behind dangerously close to black abv. I havent tried the other cores, but the ss is very hot. I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd still go with the power of the ss.

I got on the list this time on page 130. March 23rd. I'm glad you got back on!

@exit - If the SSV has the same heater support as the LSV, then it can also be converted to a HIsurfer. The main advantage is the size of the roasting tube you can use. The 3/8" / 10mm size bowls allow for more fresh bowls per gram of your herb. The vapor to air ratio can be very high. It also helps with conservation.

I did do some traveling for the holidays which has taken me away from the shop. The HI's are made in batches so some might have to wait a little longer than others after we decide on wood and heater cover types. Have been doing some more work with aluminum too. Here is a photo of the latest HILite model.
It is 3-3/4" tall and weighs 33.6 grams.

WOW i am glad my order hasn't been fulfilled yet because the HILite looks :o:o:o

industrial!!!

Alan I will email you and see if I can't build the worlds first HIsurfer.

I like how the HI's are evolving. I'm digging the glass/ss and hopefully when my time comes up; signed up in May, you'll have something great Alan
The core in my PD has been rattling for some time now as I've failed to locate some retaining rings to hold it in place. The gaps between the wood and the core is huge and heating up a little hot but still functional. II'll be able to retire my ;pd; soon.

Out of curiosity, do you run your PD 24/7?

In 4 years of usage, its been on 75% of the time due to the heat up time. Problem solved with the HI. Maybe with the non SS core HI, temp will be a little lower; another problem solved.

I was wondering because mine is on most of the time and I only notice a rattle when it is cold. I've only had mine 2+ years though.

Your PD probably has aged better than mine if on the same timeline. I didn't handle/maintain my PD well early on and my Cherry wood didn't look like a prime cut.

Love the HIlite Alan, Happy Holidays. :peace:

Nice!

I'm actually still combusting til I get mine.... enlightenment, please save me.

Here are some pictures of the latest addition to my collection. This is the second one I picked up through the classifieds. I traded the first right after I won my UD and I missed it almost immediately. I'm just happy to have one again.

Finished up a batch of HI's recently and had one with a remarkable grain pattern. It is bocote with the grain oriented sideways and an ebony bottom cap. It reminds me of the sun setting on the ocean.

Excited to see the Voltage Keeper units introduced. They work really well with the HI. I was fortunate enough to get some that I can offer with my HI units.
