Hi guys,

I've managed to break the heating element on my DBV by getting water on it (long story!). I'm fairly certain it is the heating element at fault because the light on the back comes on when I turn it on, and the light gets brighter if I turn up the dial, so the electronics and thermostat seem to be ok.

My DBV is outside of warranty and I would be shipping from overseas if I were to send it back. I've been in contact with 7th Floor and they were quite evasive when I suggested a replacement part. I fear the cost of round trip postage and full repair would be roughly equivalent to buying a new DBV (which I'd rather do if it is the only option, it would certainly be quicker than a round trip!)

So I'm wondering if the heating element is a standard part which can be replaced? I can't imagine it's a bespoke unit. Does anybody know the part number or anything to that effect?

Thanks in advance
I heard the heating element is a heiko soldering iron with the metal removed to expose the ceramic inside. I have no clue if you can buy it though.....

I'm pretty sure the DBV and the SSV use a 60 W heater.

It's Hakko. And the cheap models everyone used, the Hakko 456 and the 556 are no longer on the market. They have a newer version (FX-601) but its more expensive and has a smaller ceramic heater than the previous model.

Yea it is hakko that is the one I was looking for lol. But this is the best one I could find that looked the same.

Amazing thanks for the detail guys!!

My DBV is 3+ years old, should I therefore be looking for the older heating element you referred to (456/556)? Are there any documented cases of someone successfully replacing the element? If I were to use the newer fx-601 element, would it work in my DBV?

I've found a replacement element for fx-601 on sale here for only $20! http://www.qsource.com/p-11394-hakko-a1600-replacement-heater-for-fx-601-soldering-iron.aspx .The exact part number is Hakko A1600 it seems :)

A little more googling and I've found a replacement element for the 456 here: http://www.tequipment.net/HakkoA1177.html. The exact part number is Hakko A1177

I've emailed their UK distributor to see if he can help me. I hope he doesn't ask any questions about soldering!

They might be too big.

The 456/556 element is on the right. I believe the DBV element is more the size of the left one.

Looks like that comes with a temperature sensor, so you are paying for that. You can find the elements cheaper than that.

Interesting. I'll take some measurements when I'm back home (out of the country at the moment) and compare to the specs of the Hakko elements.

To be honest, for $20 I'm happy to pay for the sensor, i would be paying a hell of a lot more for a one way trip for my DBV to the US, let alone parts, labour and return postage.

Anyone else use a wpa as a mouthpiece? I couldn't stand tha mouthpiece theygave me

I like dbv/ssv mp so much I use them for my dry underdog stems. I just use a little piece of the underdog silicon on the end for a 4" shorty stem.

What don't you like?

@KidFated. Yeah they do sell black wands and/or kits. Saw the option available when I purchased my BH model because I also bought a clear wand/tube/mp(wanted to use a clear setup until I mastered my DBV).

Does anyone know if under warranty how much it would cost to have the element replaced by 7th floor?
I have the 10 year warranty, hopefully that factors into cost.
Not wanting to do it immediately, but I imagine when he's 5-6 years old a new element would be choice.

Yeah man! Someone on /r/vaporents gave me the idea, been rolling with it ever since.

Has anyone seen tokin's video of him launching his dbv? I think heating elements will stand tha test of time unless you really mess something up.. I suppose i could see an eventual loss in heat from the element though..

Thanks VapeNStone! I would hope so, I went with 7th floor primarily because of their awesome customer service
