The discovery of pot’s astonishing medical potential is the most compelling new reason for legalizing the plant.

For many years, the federal government has subsidized studies designed to prove the negative effects of marijuana, while blocking inquiry into its potential benefits. Ironically, the government’s steadfast search for harm has yielded remarkable scientific insights that explain why cannabis is such a versatile remedy and why it is the most sought-after illicit substance on the planet.

It's also not amusing how the us gov, while keeping mj as a schedule 1 and denying any medical use/benefits, obtained the patent for mmj in 2003 (patent no. 6630507). It is worded as 'cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants' - medical cannabis to the layman. Really shows the duplicitous, backhanded evil minded nature of our gov while people die everyday who could have at least suffered less, if not actually controlled/alleviated symptoms w/ mmj.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe one can only patent the processes of cannabinoids (extractions & formulations) and their synthetic manufacturing(s) (soon, no doubt, to be at a pharmacy near you lol). Pretty sure that nobody (other than mother nature or GAWD), has any ownership over natural plants themselves.

Not really new discoveries, just not widely shared information due mainly to the stigmatization.
But...
...prohibition is a crime against the population if not against humanity. The greed behind willfully withholding a potential cure for cancer in order to control the commerce around it is staggering. Anyone who claims to believe in God, anyone who claims to believe in good, or fairness, or simply their fellow humans, has to see the blatant disregard for the rest of us in the eyes of these powerful prohibitionists.
Spread the science. Spread the truth.
FC isn't a bad place to start directing people.

I like to encourage the theory that government continues the prohibition because they fear the backlash that will inevitably follow once it becomes known that they've held back the cure for cancer. I have no idea if that's really true but I like the subversive nature it embodies.

I think it far surpasses cancer cures. Cannabis and Hemp can single handedly destroy the business of animal food as hemp seeds are a far superior food than soya and gmo soya, pharmaceuticals since cannabis oil extractions and hemp seed oil have applications in more fields of pharmaceuticals than any other plant and at a very low cost, it is the best source for paper, biodiesel and clothing as well as any type of skin creams.
So, its oil, pharmaceutical and agrobusiness going down the drain. That is too much money involved in there.

Not to mention all petrol based plastics and materials used for everyday objects and in construction that can be replaced with hemp composites.

You don't get the cannabinoids w/o the plant. W/ gov controlling cocaine, we can't grow coca leaves - even though the plant has medicinal value. While a plant is not patentable, it is obviously able to be regulated/controlled/prohibited/criminalized. This patent pertains to the 'use' of cannabinoids:

This from the New York Post:

"Patent No. 6,630,507, you see, is for cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. Most people would simply refer to this as medical marijuana."

If you look at the patent, there is deliberate language isolating the use of 'non psychoactive' cannabinoids. I don't think anyone who has a grasp on history could effectively argue that our gov wouldn't love to continue criminalizing the plant (which contains psychoactive compounds) while selling us what derivatives they could. Marinol is a perfect example.
