I have to agree, that new video is not helping their cause. All good portables I have used need to warm up for a couple of minutes before they produce really good vapor, I'd be interested to see the first hit after letting it heat for a couple mins.
I kind of agree, but the material did turn yellow, and there was one noticeable cloud... supposedly around 300 degrees?

Yeah in the comment section Grasshopper says about 300F. It's still a better cloud than my DV gets at 300 and it looks like it gets to temp way faster. I'm not worried, if I had the money I would get two.

Space is the Place
I don't even think I get visible vapor at 300F on either my DV or NO2 (the only vapes I have that display temp) I'll have to experiment with a bright light.
I am liking what I see of the Grasshopper so far, can't put up any money until next month (if then with the holidays)

Showing the efficacy of a vaporizer on video, and judging it, is a really hard thing to do.

My 2 cents on video #1 is it that it looks like the thing can run at high power and produce respectable "clouds" for those who want that, perhaps at the expense of a completely even extraction. That's a strong 'perhaps' because ABV is also a really hard thing to judge on camera.

Then in video two they've shown you can run it at a lower temp and with shorter puffs and get what looks like the kind of production I'd hope for under those conditions, as well as what seems to be an even extraction.

There's a moment of what I think is hidden greatness that comes right after his first pull in the second video, when he exhales but you don't see anything. If you watch my Cera video, you can see what looks like the same thing happening to me. If it really is the same thing that's happening to both of us, that's a sign of some nice strong flavor coming through on the first hit. With the Cera, the flavor was good & strong enough that I went to puff for the camera, and lo & behold nothing shows up.

I can see someone watching that moment and getting worried, thinking 'Look, the thing doesn't work well!' The common instinct is to think that visible clouds dispensed on demand (from the first pull) is what good vaporization should look like. But when I see him pull, exhale, and blow out "nothing", I think to myself that there must be a reason he exhaled then, and that reason must be good flavor.

Looking at the Grasshopper as what it claims to be, a remarkably small convection vaporizer, I think it's doubtful that you will be able to take a very quick puff (on any setting) and blow out big clouds. You have to draw in the heat and work past evaporating the moisture before you get to 'the good stuff'. To be able to do that as quickly as some might expect would require a heat exchanger of such a high temperature, and in all likelihood a greater size as well. I just don't see that being possible in this form factor, certainly not without making the exterior uncomfortably warm.

But judging from what little I've seen, I do think that they've managed to make something that does operate by convection and seems to work well. Even very well I might add, given the unparalleled size. Enough so that I've put my money down. I think that anyone dreaming of VXC performance, involving showy vapor clouds on-demand, in something battery-operated of this size is going to have to keep dreaming for a while. Even a Cloud needs a good few minutes to heat up to working temperature? Not an instant-on affair.

But, I also think that what I see here is every bit worth $99.

We've got two videos showing very different things, and that gives me hope that this vape will have versatility. I do like to have a good hard kick from a vape once in a while, but I also love to sip and savor.

Or, as the good Ataxian might say…

VERSATILITY!
FLAVOR & EFFECT!

Now that I think of it, you're right. I don't get any visible vapor at 300F on the DV. Maybe around 340 or so to get the vapor shown in the video.

And I think @nopartofme is spot on. Too much to quote and respond to, I'll just leave it as 'I strongly concur with the whole post.'

If the circuit board and firmware haven't been finalized, would it be possible to incorporate a stealth mode with an internal switch where if you're not connected to the charger you could switch into stealth mode and disable the LEDs?

In a dark place where you need to be discreet, those LEDs could be a problem. Since the air intake holes do double duty letting the LEDs shine through, you can't just block them with a piece of black tape. If you have a full battery and you turn on the Grasshopper and wait for a full minute, you'll know the pen is ready without needing to look at any LED status indicators.

Can you do it? :ninja:

Yes we've been thinking about this, we'll let you know what we come up with.

As for the clouds, everyone has different preference and hits differently, hell even lungs are different from person to person, some absorbing a lot of vapor, others not as much. We're not really sure how to demo it because personally I hold in my vapor so I can absorb it, exhaling it is just a big waste. From an engineering standpoint we can say its extremely thermodynamically efficient, and we're delivering a huge amount of heat energy to the flowers in little time.

Let me know if I'm out to lunch and we can somehow demo it better

We're here to fuck shit up.
I think the demos have been pretty spot on. As been stated, everyone has different experiences with vaporizers. I could not get my MFLB to work for me, I just couldn't, but I've seen other people pull big clouds from an MFLB. To me, it looks exactly like what everyone has been searching for, a small pen type vape for flowers. The videos have shown that is exactly what it is. I can't wait to get my hands on this and give the Grasshopper a good long testing.

Your videos need an introduction wherein the individual clearly states what is happening; whether it is low temp or high, what the video is intended to demonstrate, etc.

I think regardless of lung efficiency and breath-holding technique, prospective "PenHoppers" such as myself would like to see a quick exhale right after a draw, just to see the density of vapor possible at different temps and loads. Of course, we should be looking at the type of herb most favored by FC members;-) Thanks!

+1. At minimum I'd start with the min and max temperatures, with those people can infer just about everything else. I'm still a bit unsure what this thing will do at max temperature unless I missed a video of that somewhere.

Re possible stealth mode:

Thought of this just now after using my LED flashlight. It has a white LED and red LED on the side... if you press and release the power button immediately the regular white LED turns on, but if you press the power button and hold for a couple of seconds before releasing, the red LED turns on.

So if Zenpen/GH could make the Grasshopper go into stealth mode by holding down the power switch for a couple of seconds before releasing, that would be much more convenient than fiddling with an internal switch.

(I'm betting they've probably already thought of this.)

The $40k milestone was reached today! $8966 was contributed. So far, excluding the Day One rush, each day has brought more contributions than the day before!

That brings the "Future Daily Requirement" to $2137 (down from $2390 yesterday), or 22 standard units per day (down from 24 yesterday).

If they can somehow keep this pace up, the grasshopper will easily surpass vapexhale's indigogo campaign. Was vapexhale's contribution window limited to 30 days as well?

There going to be at the half way mark in no time, 50,000K, I'am feeling more and more confident everyday this will come to fruition.
The GreenHopper Looks pretty slick, Liking the idea of a smelly proof titanium case with stash compartment.
@Zenpen

1) Will the smelly proof Titanium cases come in different colors?

2) Is the case padded inside ?

Hey, longtime luker firsrt timewhatever.

Been following the story here and on reddit and wanted to cross pollinate a bit. Anywho, Trevor from grasshopper vape said he was going to start posting daily goals to help the project and I figured that was something you lot would be interested as well. http://www.reddit.com/r/GrassHopperVape/ if you care to follow along.

Ahem. More importantly, are any of you fine respectable gentlemen located in North Carolina? They were asked about getting a demo unit out there for a third party test and they explained why they hadn't been able too.

The issue is mostly a financial one, it costs thousands of dollars to build prototypes, and small orders. We need to raise capital to order a large quantity which makes the unit price much cheaper

So obviously that's going to be a bit too steep to pay. The idea of an Open House was brought up so if anyone is in the area you should blow up Zenpen. I really think a good independent impression would turn a lot of people on the fence.

As far as the campaign, I haven't contributed yet. I can't decide if I wan't to spring for titanium or not and if I do, color or plain.

WTF ! it's over 43k now …..

I think I wil fire on a replacement battery but still undecided concerning the case which is useful of course but a bit pricey IMO .
I could be wrong but I read on there blog the case can hold up to 4 or 5 gams of herbs as well, not sure if thast with out pen or including pen, looks like seperate compartments for the pen and herb.

I'm not too far. I would be more than willing to take the drive over and visit. I'll send them a message to see if they're really open to it!

i stubmled upon a possible different angle on the "not a medical device" discussion we had several pages ago. the legal situation regarding electronic cigarettes seems still to be unclear in many countries. in some they were or still are considered medical devices. prior to a decision of the european parliament last month there were even reported load confiscations by the customs in germany and other countries. in the us they would be subject to drug legislation if marketed for therapeutic use, regardless of their material safety. i guess, declaring them a non-medical device could be just a fail-safe against the FDA.
