I was a smoker for 8+ years, Ive been cigarette free for almost a year and a half now!
In my opinion and views, I think that you should never quit smoking until you're ready to quit for good.
Because if you "quit" and relapse and start smoking again, you will subconsciously relate quitting with smoking and continue to relapse. What happened to me is i dont want to die young, or of cancer so i just asked myself "why am i killing myself, and paying for it at that?!" and i put them down and never looked back...i still hit my girlfriends electric cigarette every once in a while just for fun or when i feel like im vaping/smoking too much herbs/oil... best of luck in your journey you have the strength to do it if you really want to!

I totally disagree with this. An addition to tobacco is no different than any other addiction, and I do think that it's a proven fact that for most of us, it takes MANY attempts to quit before that one attempt finally clicks.

Waiting to quit until you "think" you are ready, in my opinion, is just wasting sooooo many missed opportunities to finally quit simply because failure is such a great teacher and recovering from an addiction is a "learned" process.

I agree with you here, but it has been in my experience many people have said "yeah im gonna quit..BUT i need this gum, patch, dvd, hypnotist" etc i think that makes people feel more vulnerable like they NEED someone or something to help them quit when they can maybe just do it all along..again im not saying for everyone, everybody is different

That word "but" is nothing but an escape clause to keep one firmly planted in their addiction. An addicted mind is a funny thing and it will mind-fuck you into believing anything it can to keep the addiction going. Learning that and recognizing when it happens is paramount to quitting any addiction.

Addiction runs deep in my family but i overcame my cigarette addiction due to the fact that i dont plan on dying anytime soon..or ever haha.
yes i hope everyone will eventually quit smoking tobacco eventually but this is a free world and it IS just a plant so long as it isnt sprayed with numerous chemicals

Are you implying that smoking tobacco that isn't sprayed with chemicals is harmless just because it's a plant?

Plants can be VERY dangerous........even poisonous.

Alternatively you could carry on smoking, sure it is very addictive but it's not always terribly bad for some people... try and enjoy it if you want to stick with it...

My Russian Roulette analogy still holds true. Just because someone may live playing RR, does that mean that anyone should play it, and feel safe doing so?

Hmm...

Imagine how long he could have lived...
Sorry Ansel, but your constant pushing of this snus shit combined with these last posts makes it very hard for me to take anything you post seriously anymore...:\

sorry broseph i'm all about pushing snus as a harm reduction product as i believe it not only saves lives but improves lives... but i have no problem with people smoking tobacco, they can be better people... hell, einstein even smoked a pipe...

Misery loves company.

Ansel, I understand the benefits vs smoking, but surely a time comes where enough is enough?

How long have you used snuss as an alternative to smoking? Is the nicotine controlling you? Is that acceptable to you?

Well i quit smoking with snus for 2 years and then i went travelling so wound up enjoying the fags again... now i tri-use shag baccy for 1.) a briar pipe 2.) the odd roll up and 3.) i make a pea sized ball and stick it up my hooter ala nasal snuff. I guess you could say i enjoy tobacco. It's a hobby if you like.

i just enjoy the synergy between tea/coffee and smoke.

i have too much time on my hands not to smoke.

it depends where you want to draw the line as i could very well say to you: does cannabis control you?

well we are all playing russian roulette aren't we? whether we smoke or not.

snus health effects have been looked at for around 200 years... ecigs have a way to go before we know exactly the health effects... me? i just like something to do with my hands ie. play with my briar pipe.

briar pipe smoking for me is like a meditation of sorts.

Over the falls, in a barrel
I think it bears mentioning that I've read nicotine provides a measurable benefit for schizophrenics, and Ansel has previously mentioned he has that condition.

It doesn't justify encouraging all people to continue taking nicotine rather than attempting to quit, though

In all seriousness i found giving up smoking and moreover giving up tobacco incredibly hard. But in answer to the OP and taking into account he is in the UK why not order some Oliver Twist chewing tobacco from MySmokingShop to try. You may find you can cut down in half how many you smoke or you may choose to quit smoking (fuck combustion) completely. NRT is useless. Giving up is difficult (can lead to anxiety and/or depression amongst other things) as your brain became wired to be a smoker and derive pleasure from it... just my two cents...
