Has anyone struggled with giving up smoking cigarettes?

hmm, well smokeless tobacco could be considered addictive in much the same way as drinking caffeine is said to be addictive.

While caffeine is addictive, it is nowhere near in the same league as the addictiveness of nicotine. Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs on the planet. Man, I've done about every recreational drug there is and nicotine was by far, the hardest to put down.

The biggest symptom of caffeine withdrawal is headaches, and while they can be pretty intense, the desire to keep consuming caffeine is nowhere near as strong as the desire to keep ingesting nicotine.

and i still say the only realistic alternative to smoking cigarettes is using Swedish snus.

Only realistic alternative is Snus?

What about exercise? What about the alternative of simply not taking in any nicotine, regardless if it's from smoke or e-cigs or Snus or whatever?

When you want nicotine, yes. As soon as exercise releases nicotine into my blood stream, I'll stop using my ecig. We're talking harm reduction.

No, but exercise goes a long way into helping one support their desire to quit.

The more important question though is, is "harm reduction" used as a stepping stone to eventually giving up nicotine forever, or is it a permanent home for those who have given up on the idea of total abstinence?

But even a worse situation are those who have never been addicted to nicotine in the first place but take up Snus or E-cig's simply because they are under the false impression that they are totally harmless.

If nicotine is not linked to cancer, and eliquid uses 3 other ingredients besides nicotine that has all been studied and found to be safe for human consumption, where exactly is the danger?

"A central concept of toxicology is that effects are dose-dependent; even water can lead to water intoxication when taken in too high a dose, whereas for even a very toxic substance such as snake venom there is a dose below which there is no detectable toxic effect"

I think the vast majority of people dealing with e-cigs won't have to worry about the toxicity of nicotine. Those who might have to worry will be people who are mixing their own e-liquid using pure 100mg/mL nicotine base without gloves, while accidentally spilling some of it on their skin, where it gets directly absorbed into the bloodstream.

or

People who have small children and leave bottles of POISON (nicotine liquid) out in the open, in non child proof bottles like these people http://www.jpost.com/Breaking-News/Toddler-who-ingested-liquid-nicotine-passes-away-314683

I only vape 0mg e-liquid anyways, so no nicotine for me..I just think it's funny that the guy on the news is telling me vaping is scary because I might someday decide I want a real cigarette, like vaping is a gateway drug.

Right on

I went from 24 mg down to 6 mg nicotine
I'll b at 0 mg by Christmas

Caffeine and sugar are gateway drugs.:)

I enjoy Swedish snus as well, but what's wrong with e-cigs for harm-reduction purposes?

sure that's fine but most use the nicotine only whereas a WTA liquid would give you the missing alkaloids that us ex-smokers love(d) so much.

nicotine will prob raise your heart beat slightly much like caffeine so in that respect they are comparable. yes it's more addictive (nicotine). Much more. But being addicted to a fairly harmless drug is not so bad depending on the delivery system.

I'm curious, might that include MAOIs like Q was talking about here?

Good Job Knowmad .......................... AttaBoy.

Yup, but stay vigilant. That tobacco monster will continually stalk you over the next year or so and attack you when you're least expecting it. Stay alert. He/she comes in many disguises..........

Too True lwein I quit a two pack a day habit 20 some odd years ago for nearly 5 years and picked it back up.
At the time it seemed I had nothing to lose as the docs only gave me a month or so to live. Now I'm smoking half a pack a day. what a waste of time and money.

Why don't you at least vape that nicotine instead of combusting and try and wean yourself off? Just a thought.
I was 4.5 years smoke free and started again in Jan:o So easy to fall right back in:(. Then i switched to pre filled e-cigs and did that for a while. Now i'm filling my own and lowering the nicotine level each week -it's working, down to 4mg .
The big problem is i LIKE SMOKING :p but know i really should not:doh:

I used to smoke 3 packs a day, but when I really took a close look at it, I only really enjoyed about 4 of those 60 a day. Wish I could only smoke 4 a day, but for me, that was just impossible so I just quit all of them........over 30 years ago.

It's not 4 a day Iwien, it's 4mg of nicotine in the e-juice . I was a heavy smoker like you and i fell right back in there after smoking just one!

Yup, and therein lies the danger of getting too cocky when you quit. I quit a lot of things 30 years ago, but I have no doubt that if I had just one cig today, I'd be back to 3 packs within a few weeks. Same goes for coke. One line and I'd be off and running buying grams.

RudeBoy a half a pack a day Really? Look at how many vapes you buy a month and your still smoking.
well I'm sure you know all this but you really should buy an Ego or something and get off the cigs.
Vaping Ejuice is so much better and it's easy to switch over because it's so much better, stronger.
I handed my dad an Ego about a month ago and he's not smoked since down to 0% nicotine already.

FrogBoy138 Thanx for the concern.

Cigarettes are next on my list of habits to deep six. Within the last 5 years I had to kick a narcotics addiction (ok the doctors say I was medically dependent) Having spent 15 years with a morphine pump working 24/7plus handfuls of morphine sulfate and methadone daily also I am 4 months going cold turkey Off Benzos. I am down to taking two anti-virals and a thyroid med, down from a shoebox full of meds.

By the end of next year I hope to be tobacco free but only see myself really doing it cold turkey, weaning off doesn't work for me. I just kind of have to deal with one thing at a time. PEACE.
