After long-term ownership of the SSV and DBV now, I must say I really miss the DBV and much prefer it over the SSV. =(

eScape,
In what ways would you say the DBV is better?
I've never actually hit a DBV, but I do have a GG heater cover, so I assumed the performance would be near identical?

The performance will be very similar with the SSV if using GonG attachmants/wand... except the SSV has a downward angle preferred by many.
If you are an SSV owner that regrets parting with your DBV, you can get a GonG HC and a Hands free wand!

I'm finally getting my gg heater cover tomorrow. After reading some posts, comparing the gg and std, I've been curious to compare the 2. can finally get a vape session tonight, (last final was this morning!) and I can't wait to use my new gg setup tomorrow.

I like the design better of the DBV and I'm able to get better hits out of it, but of course it's all subjective. The SSV just doesn't perform that well to me or I might just not be able to use it well...

Hello everyone and happy holidays! I hope you are enjoying them and having a blast! Haven't been here for a bit but I am still enjoying my SSV. Haven't looked back; some of my friends call me a snob lol. A few have been converted to the awesomeness of vaping but eh....some people's minds just cant be changed lol.

I really love my SSV....but I was wondering what to do next? Buy another unit with art or pick up a few extras?

My SSV is still going strong so I went with the accessories.

I decided to go with the Saturn Vapor Tamer! I've read a little bit about some of your experiences in this thread. It should be here next week, does anyone have any advice, tips etc?

Thanks in advance everyone and once again Happy Holidays!

Oh one more extra question lol....do any of you have more than one SSV? If so why?

My unit has always been a bit of a mutt. It's a silver unit with a purple base, blue aroma top, a dark blue hand for the temp control knob and covered with star wars decals lol. I've always wanted one of the fancier custom units but hey...I love my unit and can't get rid of it lol.

Cheers Bandit King! There's a Vapor Tamer thread here: http://fuckcombustion.com/viewtopic.php?id=6494 There aren't many real tips or tricks you need for the VT, biggest thing is to suck the moisture out before refreezing.

Have you tried a standard HC set-up? That and a mini wand from Vaporwarehouse are my tools of choice. Mini wands back-ordered again! Less than a week wait it says. Strange, you can still get the whole whip!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all, whether you celebrate it or not!!! (That's as politically correct as I get.) :peace:

I would like to throw in there with cluffy's advice, that if you have a shop vac around, it is invaluable for a quick insta-dry of the VT when it has any moisture condensed on it.

Well lol I'm a little embarrassed to say but nope I haven't tried the standard yet. Every time I set out to change out the pieces for the standard connection I punk out lol. The heating covers seem so tough to change in my mind lol that I stick with the GonG connections.

The mini wand seems interesting enough, it stinks that it's sold out at the moment.

So moisture in the tube eh? Well I don't have a shop vac but I may look into one if that's a big issue.

So what's the ideal setup? Also is it better to have two tamers so one is always freezing? Could one get away with using a Saturn and one of the discounted models?

Can't wait til it ships!

The ideal setup is the one that u like best. I enjoy the saturn vapor tamer ALOT(only I didnt realize u have to suck out the moisture) I also like the ice chambers. You can check out the ones 7th floor has, or Alot of ppl use their water pipes/bongs as an attachment. I use 7th floor's and its a solid piece. Its a great way to get smooth, powerful hits.

scooter,
Howdy folks, stopped into my local headshop today to see about a silver surfer and they had one, the price however was $325, so I just came home and ordered this one instead.
Silver Surfer
Not much else to say, been smoking for a few years, love my glass so I also got a GonG adapter so I can vape out of my bongs.
Can't wait to get my silver surfer sometime next week!

Welcome to the wave. You're gonna love the GonG adapter, I think its essential!

Glairige,
To clarify I did not get the gong heater cover, just the 14mm piece that fits in the downstem. Still plan on rocking the standard heater cover.

Well after 20 years of firefighting I am left with PTSD but now can medicate, so screw it! The SSV has a little learining curve for sure. I found a moist spot at around the 1 o'clock position.......:)

some of the dankest stuff ive ever had. and it taste good thru the surfer:brow:

scooter,
Hello guys.

Newcomer to the circle of vaporization, smoking for 13 years (...), I received my Silver surfer this morning.

First check, all seems to work.

First surprise, you need an additional accessory for not having both hands taken during the process. I knew I would have ordered at the same time, too bad. . I'm still a bit surprised to have to hold the part of the right hand while I aspire to the left hand. Am I wrong?

I traveled a lot before the forum to get into this purchase and I saw a lot of people talk of an effect e dry throat and the necessity to drink a lot. Do you think the "coolwater stuff" is important?

Tonight is a big night! The first night. Hoping that I will not burn it all, the material is something very rare here!

So if i understood, i turn to the full power 2 minutes and calm down at 1/3, put the pipe in contact, wait a minute or two and let's go? :brow:

I intend to explore all this new world and learn the tips pointing my middle finger up well to the tobacco industry.

I know that vaporization preserve the health by stopping tobacco, but it is true that it has a washing function too or it's just a fantasm? :p

Next post the resume of the experience :D

Hey dude. welcome. the part that you have to hold is the standard wand, and your using a standard heater cover. Alot of people actually like using the standard heater cover and the wand because it allows them to rotate the wand around while touching the heater cover. You can focus the heat on to any part of the your herbs surface. When I first bought the ssv, I thought the same thing as you. I didn't like that you had to hold wand as well as the mouth piece, but as I used the standard heater cover setup more and more, I started to like it. If you want something handsfree, you guy the ground glass heater cover AND ground glass wand (u need both) or the handsfree attachment, like you said. I own the ground glass setup too and I like it, its different in that u have to stir it alot more, but I like it almost as much as the standard.

I never had issues with a dry throat, but I do own the saturn vapor tamer and a bong to attach to my ssv. If you don't care much for bongs, the Saturn is a great accessory. It moistens and cools down the vapor by ALOT!More than my bong does.

Alot of ppl like to put the knob at the 1'oclock postion which is where the lrg bump on your knob is pointing straight up and a little to the right (sorry i dont know where your knob was positioned first) You can do what you said, but I usually turn my knob to 1oclock and leave it there for 3-5 min(usually ready to go in 3 min) As long as your heating rod gets hot enough its fine.
U made a fine purchase, enjoy the first experience with it, im jealous

+1 on the fine purchase.
it takes hands on to begin to master the SSV. I have the GonG and love it.
I also enjoy using it in standard mode. use it in good health. :p

I've never seen it sold here, I did found some Diesel Haze in a local shop the other day though. Could they be alike?

It was good but not amazing. I'm spoiled though.

OhTheAgony,
Thank you Scooter for the welcome.

As expected, I come to give my impressions after the first tests of the SSV and vaporizing in general.

The first time I tried leaving the ISS to 3 minutes maximum and then I reduced to one third of its power. At first I think I had the reflex of many beginner to know that I thought I had missed because I had no discernible effect. And then, everything came at once. A high enough power that reminded me of the feelings of ingestion.

It was my first vaporizing and it is true that the taste is much better and the effect more clearly, although I found that the effect dissipated faster than the traditional way of combustion. Maybe because for the moment I met at 2/6. And not a super quality product.

The last two uses me a little less confident because I had much less effect :|. Maybe I have been less successful. From what I understood it after a while one learns to have hits stable. Frustrating, if you know the market price here, you understand me hehe. But I will be patient.

The Silver Surfer is easy to use and seems very solid. I do not regret my purchase at this time, albeit a bit expensive for what it is, we see that it is good quality. It is nice enough to stay in my living room without attracting attention. I have the red model with chrome base; For cons I think we should really take care of ceramic elements, I hope not to have to replace them too often.

About the throat, it's true that there is a sensation of dryness. Even hydrates abound. I have not the means to offer me a cool water. I'll have to try to see on the forum if this addition really changes things in terms of deshydration. What do you think?

Recently I had the reflex to smoke residues not completely burned in a J :uhoh:. I think a lot of beginners do this... Yes I know, it makes no sense. But I feel like a mess ... I will banish it from my behavior. The SSV seems so much more healthy. The burning taste starts disgust me already.

If I understand, the initial position of the knob (off) is about 6 hours? I had read somewhere on the forum but can not find this information.

Another question, Do you apply the wand's glass bowl on the heather cover for a few seconds (or minutes) before starting to inhale?

For the moment I have cleaned the wand and the tube after each use (water). Is this a mistake? How do people generally?

In any case I am delighted to vaporizing at this time. I look forward to control it better. :ninja:

I had the same first experience with the surfer; the hits werent large enough, i could see a little vapor when i exhaled, and wouldnt feel too high at all. try turning it up to full power, then turn it to about 12, or 1'oclock. Alot of ppl like this position. DOnt turn it back down to 1/3 power if u want nice, big hits. THe ssv is designed to deliver large hits, but u have to have the temp high enough.

My off position is about 7 oclock. I think the off position is usually around 6 or 7 but it doesnt matter as long as u know what positions will bring u good temps. U dont have to hold the wand against the heater cover before in inhaling, ive always just placed it on and started to pull. And i usually clean my stuff with 70% iso alcohol once every week. vtac actually put a thread up in the Vapor lounge about how to clean parts and reclaim resin, if u want to look that up. I wouldn't worry about cleaning it afteru use it everytime. Itll prob get annoying doing that after every vape session, especially if u vape as much as I do:ko:

Hope that helps.

There are smoke byproducts that have an effect (mostly couchlock/sleepiness) and aren't really related to cannabis compounds at all. Vapor is a much cleaner high. You do miss a few sedative compounds that release at high temps or with combustion, but the healthier high is worth it, IMO.

For cons I think we should really take care of ceramic elements, I hope not to have to replace them too often.
They've been running at least one unit at the factory for about 6 years or so, 24/7. Ceramic heaters last a long, long time, and 7th Floor uses a very high quality element.

About the throat, it's true that there is a sensation of dryness.
The SSV offers a very rich vapor stream, due to the narrow opening in the heater cover. This requires you to do some bowl stirring between hits, but less stirring is required if you move the wand around a little during hits, to spread the heat around some. In comparison to some other models, like the Extreme/V-Tower, which gives you a lot of air with your hits, the SSV doesn't really dry your throat that much. You can decrease the amount of dryness by easing off on your draw speed, but keep in mind that the vaping temp is determined by both the temp setting, and your draw speed. If you vary your draw speed, from one hit to another, you change the vaping temp accordingly. You can also use water filtration with this model-many examples of that on the forum.

If I understand, the initial position of the knob (off) is about 6 hours?
Mine is off at about 6:30- 7, but since you can remove the knob and put it back on at any position you want, it really doesn't matter where it clicks on/off. The important thing is to find the vapor range on your particular unit, low end and high end. Even if you like high temp vapor, it's still better to start low/medium and move up as your vapor trails off at a particular setting. Your herb doesn't last long at higher temp settings.

Do you apply the wand's glass bowl on the heather cover for a few seconds (or minutes) before starting to inhale?
The heat is supplied by the element, and the heater cover to a lesser degree. It's not necessary to try and heat up the wand as well. You can apply the wand to the HC and hit right away. Your draw speed is much more of a factor with temp, vs. how hot the wand is.

For the moment I have cleaned the wand and the tube after each use (water).
You can go quite a while without cleaning. Don't leave herb residue in the screen. Use the pointed stir tool to scrape the screen when the bowl is done, and the screen stays quite clean. I usually wait until the wand acquires a good covering of residue before cleaning. Rubbing alcohol (ISO) works MUCH better for cleaning than water. You can soak the wand in it if you want to reclaim the residue, or just shake it with ISO and maybe some salt, then clean with a test tube brush (if you can find one). I never clean the tubing. I might use it 2-3 times while I clean the wand, then I replace it. I've also taken a 3' foot piece of tubing and just cut off the first portion, shortening the whip by about a foot and eliminating the dirty part. If you do clean the tubing, water is safer than ISO. If you use ISO, make it quick and rinse with hot water immeditately.

I think you'll find that the longer you stick with vapor, the better you'll like it. You've got a very good model. I've been using an SSV for years as my big hitter.
