Davinci by Karma

I have a newer unit that reads 405F but it seems to run hotter , judging from the AVB 415-420F when compared to an Older DV .

Hello all. Just got Davinci, relatively new to vaping, As an old hippie from the 60's, im loving this new technology and superior way to deliver THC to one's brain. All my friends are getting one!

A few questions, knowing all of them cannot be easily answered, or might be matters of opinion:

Is it necessary to fill up chamber with herb, or is half or less ok.

If you fill up, can you take one hit, turn off, and continue later? Multiple times? I only need one or two hits, what is best strategy?

Pack herb loose or tight?

How dry or moist should herb be?

What type of draw is best? Hold in lungs like smoking?

Should one see much vapor when exhaling? What is relationship between vapor and temp? What temp is good to start. When do you change, as session continues or whatnif session is later?

Ok to leave brush inside while heating and vaping?

Thanks for feedback and help....

Hello there,

Earlier this year I bought a DaVinci from Buy.com (apparently it's Rakuten.com now). I love the vape, but it quit working a few days ago. I contacted DaVinci via their web site davincivaporizer.com and received the following response:

Needless to say, I'm pretty upset. I didn't know this when I bought it and I don't think it's right for the company making this vape to sell it to third parties and then deny warranty claims to those customers. It said it had a warranty when I bought it, it came in a real box, with a serial number and warranty paperwork, etc. I've never in my life had a warranty denied by a manufacturer because I bought their product from the "wrong" vendor. How is that acceptable?

I saw the very cheap price from Rakuten but than immediately looked them up on resellerratings.com.
The reviews were terrible, with a rating of 1 out of ten! Obviously an unreliable dealer.

Sorry you're in thus situation, but when prices are too good to be true its important to check reliability and see if vendor is authorized. Guess Im telling you this too late... :-( hope you get it fixed one way or the other.

Welcome to FC!! And congratulations on your DaVinci.
You can vape as much or as little in the chamber as you wish. The overall consensus I think is the more in the more potent the vapor. I think I said that right .
You could heat it take a couple of hits and shut it off, but the battery life/ run time will decrease the more heat up cycles it performs. Also your herb will continue to cook some. After you shut off the heat. The best strategy imo for you would be to experiment with smaller loads say ¼ loads see if that is enough to get you to where you want be. That will help you from wasting you herbs until you find the perfect amount for your use.
I think that dry bud, not overly packed works best.
I try to draw at a consistent rate for 15~20 seconds then hold for about 10 seconds and repeat.
The brush is ok to leave in the unit while in use.
Hope this has answered a few questions.

1_gr8_underdog, thanks for your informative and concise reply. You' ve been quite helpful.

One more thing - what is common strategy for keeping herb fresh but than drying it out before use?
Recent herb is quite moist, hard to grind. When, where and how does one dry it out?

Man's great, ain't he? A fantastic resource for sure. We miss him sorely when he's not right there with the straight poop. And to think we made him from parts...... Hang around for a while and you can spell him at that?

IMO you need to cure well. Perhaps the most important point? Moisture not only slows the process by robbing heat that would otherwise make vapor but the moisture really gums up the vape. Very dry, fine ground herb goes many many bowls between cleanings, moist stuff is lucky to make a few before gumming up those tiny screens (incidentally lots of guys dump the upper one).

The general advice is to air dry your buds (put it in a warm spot, like on top of your router) until it cuts not shreds in the grinder. Then I dry a few more hours with the increased surface area, mixing it around a bit before bottling it up for use later. I process a gram or two at a time, I think a pretty common technique.

I suggest you experiment some, see what works best for you. But by all means explore fine and dry.

Enjoy your DV. IMO a great little product....if you can figure out how to hold onto it in longer sessions......

Best wishes and welcome to the fun! Vaping has a lot to offer, better high in many respects, you save a lot on weed bills (probably average is a 3 or 4 to one drop, serious savings) and you get to live longer to enjoy it.....a pretty winning combination doncha think?

OF, thanks for the advice. So you are saying dry buds, say, overnight in an exposed container, then grind and dry again for a few hours, than bottle for later use?

You're very welcome, glad to help if I can.

Yup, that does it for the herb I use. But it's important to understand that I buy top shelf Dispensary bud for the most part, it's usually well cured. Homegrown can be a challenge if you're in a hurry IMO.

When in doubt I advise 'go dryer' I guess? I like it almost 'crumble dry'. With some vapes, like MFLB, which are easy to dump, many of us dump the load into one palm, 'finger grind' it with the other hand and return it to the bowl once it's been really dried by the vape. In the end all the water has to be removed (at 212F) so we can get to the good stuff closer to 400F.

Early on I did some careful weigh measurements and convinced myself I lost about 30% of the weight (maybe 1/3) vaping, about half water and half THC and other cannabis goodness? That is when those first tasty hits come across you're down about 15% by weight. Mostly water, I think.

Best wises.

This is my solution for a broken straw. I got one of Ed's wooden stems for a Magic Flight and drilled one end out a little to fit the metal piece that was connected to the original straw. I have to say that this changed the overall taste of the DaVinci for the best and I don't have to worry about it coming off unless I want it too. I also use this wooden stem on my Iolite and it improves the taste on that as well. I hope this helps some that have been having issues with the stem.

A few questions, knowing all of them cannot be easily answered, or might be matters of opinion:

Is it necessary to fill up chamber with herb, or is half or less ok.
Having done the bowl at all levels of fill, I prefer a 3/4 to lightly full bowl/oven. I can use less, but then I'm disappointed that it only lasts a couple sessions and then I have to reload, which can be fiddly on the go. I want that 5 minute trip to the bathroom to be inconspicuous to muggle company. I don't like attempting to cleanly transfer in public in a hurry. There's AVB to worry about, and then reloading without sneezing or something else inauspicious happening. All just so I can get through the rest of the dinner party in a little less pain. A fuller bowl will easily allow me to hit several times and cool the unit in the space of time that one usually takes to use the facilities.

If you fill up, can you take one hit, turn off, and continue later? Multiple times? I only need one or two hits, what is best strategy?
Yes. I do this all the time. However as noted above, this decreases the overall time the unit's battery will last between charges. When I finish with my quickie session I will draw air through a powered down unit to speed the cooling (helps prevent herb from cooking as much between sessions) before I put it away.

Pack herb loose or tight?
Loose pack allows the hot air to pass through all the herb, not just the bottom (as with a tight pack). Also, with tight pack you need to stir more to get even exposure to the heat, which absolutely powders the herb and clogs all the screens quickly, blocking your draw in a vicious cycle.

How dry or moist should herb be?
A bit less dry than dry-as-dust. Dry enough to be uncomfortable to smoke. grind should be fairly uniform, not to an actual powder more like oregano in a spice jar. Whole or lightly broken herb will result in uneven vaporization and the lower surface area will keep some of the good stuff trapped in the center.

What type of draw is best? Hold in lungs like smoking?
My lungs are wimpy, but here is what I tell my friends to do: Take a slow, even draw lasting about 15 seconds, supplement with a little air either through your nose or mouth to the side of the straw. Hold for 10-15 seconds and exhale normally. If you have super lungs feel free to draw longer, or not supplement with air. I find that if I don't draw air as well, I get a coughing fit.

Should one see much vapor when exhaling? What is relationship between vapor and temp? What temp is good to start. When do you change, as session continues or whatnif session is later?
I do not tend to see much vapor, though I can at certain steps see pretty plumes of vapor, or when in colder environments like overnight camping in the woods. I am a bit forgetful, so I will often just let it run the 10 minute session that is pre-programmed to it. If I am being a good steward of my usage, though, I do the following:

I start quite low (my unit magnetic latch version) at 325 ish and use a couple hits then up ten degrees. A lot of my friends complain that they don't get anything in their first couple hits doing it this way, but then they sit back saying "Whoa!" after the ten minutes is up.

before storing it, I cool the unit and when I start up later, I will increase my temp by 5 to ten degrees. So it would be around 340 and I'd hit it for a few minutes and increase from there as needed. Next session, I would probably start around 360 and end around 375 or 380. Play with it, some people prefer flash vaping at higher temps, some enjoy the flavor more at low temps. You will find your groove.

Ok to leave brush inside while heating and vaping?
Yep. In fact should you fail to do so, I do not foresee you keeping your tiny brush very long. Darned thing is hard to keep track of when you are vaped.

Thanks for feedback and help....

Thanks so much for your informative reply. For those who will only do one or two hits in a session, what is recommended starting temp? A newbie friend just asked me this, I said 375-385. He was vaping at 295 which seemed too low to me. Is he getting affect without seeing vapor upon exhale?

Great tips. As someone who has chased clouds, I will say that you will see vapor when exhaling depending on how you use it. With a full packed bowl, and going full spectrum (low temp, ramp to max temp eventually) you will get big thick clouds out of the DV if you pull/draw steady, slow and long.

When going for bigger clouds, I would ramp up pretty quick. just a few early hits on 375 then I would step by 10, 2x more. At least half of the session on 405 for the best cloud effect.

But as GG mentioned, you don't need clouds visible, and in fact, visible cloud is mostly 'waste'. But I'm the type of guy who cuts the bottom crust off my bread... so it's not waste to me... it's part of the fun.

But I can say that there have been many times with diff vapes where the clouds are not big/thick/visible and you still get plenty of vapor.

Very first vaporizer I used was a solo set at a low temp so we were getting very little visable vapor, being a smoker of cigarettes and herb I felt like nothing was happening until I realized just how medicated I was!! I know it sounds silly but afterwards I had to have a session with my regular glass pipe so the experience would make sense to my brain! Big vapor clouds are definitely not always needed for you to have a great vape experience.

But, i assume you should see SOME visible vapor? I tried vaping at low temp (300F), saw no vapor, could taste some, effect was too light. I'm back to 375-385.

Yeah, but it was very minimal, since then I have had the solo cranking and gotten very thick vapor clouds, but with the temp so low, and my lungs being used to smoke. I thought the whole thing seemed like it was overhyped, however the effects soon kicked in and I was taken by surprise with how intense the end results were.

New question - how do you all handle strategy for storage, curing, grinding? What is your "workflow" in using herb, especially if you have many different strains? iOW, where do you store it, how and when do you dry it, etc?

V2 has magnetic catch, V1 does not. V2 has 405 max set temp and longer battery life, Vol 1 has 424 or 440 max temp.

higher temperatures can lead to combustion ?

Hi Zhash,

DV2 upgrades include:

Magnetic latch vs a plastic latch to hold the chamber closed
Increased battery life
Lower defect rate
Recessed straw to deter breakage

A way to tell when you're at the store is DV1 Serial numbers are all 0A, 0E, 0U. DV2 are 1A, 1E, 1U

you'll get better airflow and clouds with a tight but not to tight pack

you will need to find where in this forum we talk about growing and curing. the basics are to grow it, dry it, cure it in jars and then vape it. in that order :)

Hello, Fuckcombustion-ians!

Just wondering...has anyone come up with some sort of bullet / capsule solution (like the Pinnacle Pro) for the Da Vinci? I've pretty much given up on trying to put herbs in the oil cans (hense, OIL can lol).

I'm hoping to find a way to prevent having to clean the chamber each time. The Pinnacle Pro bullet is too tall for the Da Vinci chamber...

Thank you in advance for your advice...

Not growing or curing - just wondering how people deal with drying and storing new buds that have been bought, especially when having several different kinds.

I think what folks are politely trying to say is that you need to do a search in the threads for this information...whether it be growing and curing or drying and storing...

This is the DaVinci thread....not trying to be rude...and I hope you find the answers you are looking for.
