Has anyone polished out scratches?

The other day I was cleaning my 16" Goldstein and had some hard water stains on the outiside, probably from letting tap water dry on it over time. They were more like very thin organic plaques that were barely visible, as opposed to the typical lime deposit. You could only see the edge of the plaques if that makes sense as if they left little outlines where water droplets dried.

I tried CLR, citric acid and oxyclean but nothing worked by itself.

Then I tried a green scotchbrite pad and this worked great in combnation with citric acid, but after the glass dried I saw I had put a few big scratches into the glass.

Has anybody attempted to remove scratches from a piece before? I cringe at the thought of using a buffer on a glass piece like this, but the scratches bother me.....

Ouch that sounds intense, always use purified water instead of tap. N try orange chronic as a cleaner. But as for getting the scratches out you can try a glass polish but eventually you'll see them again. There may be another way that you can do at home but I'm not aware of any.

Also next time throw in some rock salt and iso, the salt is a good abrasive that doesn't scratch

i dont think your scotchbrite is hard enough to scratch boro are you sure its a scratch and not a stain or a streak?

Shit thats why the glass on my first piece has a whitish stain on the bottom...where the water goes.

Not sure where to get purified water. (is this bottled water)

How can I prevent tap water stains?

Any grocery store will carry purified water, usually large containers for a buck.

Most grocery stores will have it labeled as distilled water and it will be by the rest of the bottled waters. I had mad mineral stains until I stopped using tap water in glass.

CLR makes things soft but you do have to scrub to remove the build up. I wonder if rock salt + CLR would be good for water stains...
