Things have become more corrupt and racist than ever. Politicians have always been assholes, but now they seem like demons, Hell bent on hurting as many people as possible, no matter what race, sex, etc.

I have no doubt that the exact same things were said in the days when Lincoln was President.

The news media, all of them, as well as politicians operate on fear. Instill fear is a way to sell news. Instill fear is a way to get elected. Nothings changed in this regard.

Bullshit.

Not bullshit at all. Do a bit of research and see what was reported in the press back in those days. Lincoln was hated and demonized more than I think any other President has ever been (there's been a few others, but he's right up there). And..............his opponents were hated and demonized as well and they were both accused of being hell bent on hurting as many people as possible.

NOTHING has changed. Oh, our press would have us believe that this is all new stuff, but really, it's just stuff that's been rehashed for a VERY long time.

You bring up the past and how people were "accused" of doing bad things, and of course that happens today, but more people are actually hurting real people today. I guess if a person isn't being hurt or affected, they are blind to others pain. Everything has changed. Some are just too blind to see it.

Totally disagree, Vicki. I don't think that anything has changed and those who don't acknowledge that are just too blind to see it.

But I'm curious. What makes you say that "more people are actually hurting real people today" than in days past, when you take into account things like the days of slavery, the days of World War I and II, the days of the Great Depression, the days of our Civil War, the days of segregation, etc etc etc.

When you take all of the above into consideration, how are "more" people actually being hurt today?

I honestly don't feel like arguing with you lwien because I don't feel well. I'll agree to disagree with you.

Agreed. I was just trying to keep the conversation within the confines of the US, but yeah, the suffering of our Native Americans can't go unnoticed. And in regards to humans hurting other humans outside of our boarders going back through time, well............that kind of suffering taken in it's totality is just too barbaric to even comprehend.

FUCK HUMANS. We are, without a doubt, the most dangerous species ever to inhabit our planet, then.................and now.

I am of the opinion that the last 70 years or so has been a historical aberration, and that the USA is re-visiting the fascist "final solution" that we fought so hard to prevent just a few generations ago. People have always preyed on other people, from an individual to an institutional to an international level; any history book will confirm this. Sadly, the promise of America has all but been extinguished by the greedy part of human nature that always corrupts those in power. The fundamental shortcoming of democracy is shortsightedness; election cycles always seem to dominate over policy discussions.

Btw, I agree that our shiny nation on the hill, Plato's new fucking republic, was created on the ashes of genocide and slavery. Karma's a fucking bitch and the whip is starting to crack.

Hopefully those that believe there is a 2012-inspired "true utopia" waiting just around the corner for us are right. But with hairless apes running the show, I think it will get much worse before it gets any better.

edit: I think that there's only two things that can save us: a global electro-magnetic pulse that stops technology in its tracks, or a fucking global love bomb like nobody's ever seen before.
I vote for the latter!

I'm totally with you on the whole global love bomb idea, but only partially on the technology front. I agree we need to stop putting our energies into technologies which are evidently harmful to our planet and mankind. But I think it would be such a waste not to harness human ingenuity and potential to create new technologies which are aimed at alleviating suffering around the world in a harmonious way.

But I whole heatedly agree with you on another point - FUCK GREED & MISUSE OF POWER!!

Oh & fuck sand in your socks!! :) :peace:

ok, it's another maynard melody and the opposite of a fuck you, but i feel it applies to the convo and if you don't like it go drown in the fuckin' river ;)

love you all

Nature, nurture, heaven and home
Sum of all and by them driven
To conquer every mountain shown
But I've never crossed the river

Braved the forest, braved the stone
Braved the icy winds and fire
Braved and beat them on my own
Yet I'm helpless by the river

Angel, angel what have I done
I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
I've conquered country, crown, and throne
Why can't I cross this river?

Angel, angel what have I done
I've faced the quakes, the wind, the fire
I've conquered country, crown, and throne
Why can't I cross this river?

Pay no mind to the battles you've won
It'll take a lot more than rage and muscle
Open your heart and hands my son
Or you'll never make it over the river

It'll take a lot more than words and guns
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
The hands of the many must join as one
And together we'll cross the river

It'll take a lot more than words and guns
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
The hands of the many must join as one
Open your heart and hands my son
Or you'll never make it over the river

Yup. One really needs to visit a 3rd world country to get some perspective. I spent a year and a half in Pakistan with a quick visit to Afghanistan when I was in the Air Force back in the early 70's and when I came back and went through US customs and the customs officer greeted me with, "Welcome home", the first thing that popped into my mind was, "No shit".

The only way to really appreciate what we have here, however little that may be, is to go to a 3rd world country where just about everyone has sooooooo much less......................so, so, sooooooo much less.
