Herb Grinders

I just saw the SpaceCase 2in 4-Piece Titanium Herb Grinder for 69.99 + shipping on Mass Drop for anyone interested. Personally I still use my SCS and have nothing but but high regard.

Ive read alot of issues with mill grinders the mechanism becomes hard to turn and in some cases coming off entirely. This is just hearsay though but you might consider checking some of the older posts. It was because of some other FC'ers I decided on a traditional 4 piece.

Received my 4-piece Santa Cruz Shredder a couple of days ago (from the MassDrop sale) and I have to say that this thing is amazing! It's much smoother - both grinding and screwing apart - than my 2-piece titanium Space Case and it seems to grind finer, quicker (I assume because of the 4-tooth prongs). I've also heard that the herb catchment chamber as well as the kief-catcher are deeper than in the equivalent Space Case/Sharpstone 4-pieces. That being said, the mesh screen over the kief-catcher is finer than either of those brands so you'll need to scrape it more often (but you'll get the finest kief! Orgasmic!).

In short, I couldn't recommend this thing more. Very happy to finally have a good quality 4-piece.

Here's a pretty good review that I read before purchasing. Hit the nail on the head for the most part:

It looks like the teeth could easily break off on that one. I was talking about the sharpstone mill grinder.

SCS needs to make a clear top model ASAP. If I'm going to drop $120 on a grinder (must have large size, these small sized grinders are killing my giant man-hands) I need a clear top.

Sharpstones (not the knock offs) are using high quality materials and mfg processes, it should be durable for the teeth. The mill handle is all kinds of suspect now that people have pointed it out to me.

I'm using such a sharpstone since over a year, works ok for me :-)
A problem so far was when overloading the handle can get loose a little, easily fixed with the right tool tough.
I dislike that the handle lost its silver coating tough and you can see that it's made out of some other alloy....
I'm planning on an scs next after all the great reviews.

General consensus? Good luck with that. Especially under $35. I've checked out a lot of different grinders over the years, and unlike years ago, quality models are now available at really good prices. You may not find perfect machining (with no burrs) as with brands like Space Case and Santa Cruz, but that perfection has nothing to do with performance, just looks.

Here's a quality brand (I have both a 2 pc. and a 4 pc.) with both anodizing and a removeable screen, which is a nice (and rare) option. Search eBay for TITAN CNC 56mm Herb Spice Pollen Grinder. The seller is top rate and it's a great buy at $23.

Even cheaper and still quality, search eBay for 2.2" 4pc Chromium Crusher Tobacco Spice Herb Grinder. I've used Chromium Crusher grinders for years and have had zero issues.

Yeah was gonna suggest a small sant cruz shredder as a 2 piece but as @max has already said you can get a perfectly functional 4 piece for that price without the branding. I have 3 grinders. 2pc SCS, 4pc SC and a €25 (inflated Amsterdam price) barneys farm grinder. While the SC and SCS are smooth as shit to turn, the end result is no different to my 'unbranded' ones.

While I'm here I just thought I'd add that my space case shits all over the scs. I don't get why he scs is so hyped up on here. I don't get how it's easier to turn when only one side has a grip of any kind. The SC is way smoother and also doesn't get gunked up anywhere near as much as the SCS. The gunking up of he scs is probably due to it only being a 2 piece but for such a fantastically engineered product I think they are pretty bad. The tooth design is great though.

The squared off teeth are both a plus and a minus, providing more grinding edges but also more resistance. The standard diamond shaped teeth on the Space Case definitely make turning easier, especially when your bud isn't dry and ready to easily fall apart. I agree the Santa Cruz could use a good grip on both halves.

Received a large SCS from Amazon third party sale yesterday. Works awesome but came with a flaw in the paint of the kief chamber.

Anyone know if SCS will deal direct with me or require I go through the retailer?

Thanks Vito - appreciate the reply! Already did as you suggested.

Waiting for them to finish their morning coffee now. :)

I need a new grinder.

Mass Drop currently has a deal for a 4 Piece SpaceCase for $50, ending in 2 days.

Think this is worth it? I don't know that much about grinders. The last one I had was a gift and it was from a friend and I think it was the same chamber amount as this one but was like $30 or something.

So are these SpaceCase grinders supposedly really good quality? Too bad it doesn't come with a pollen press as well. I'm going to start reading and searching through this thread, but if anyone wants to drop a quick line about this I'd very much appreciate the input. Gonna try to see if the Santa Cruz ones are better than this.

Edit --- This Santa Cruz 4 Piece is the same price as the Mass Drop SpaceCase 4 Piece, and it also comes with a pollen press.

Hmmm I have no clue what's better or why.

2nd Edit--

So it appears that the Santa Cruz uses aluminum while the SpaceCase uses titanium. Titanium is probably the better material.. right? Or does it matter? Santa Cruz has square tooth shredding, which is apparently very good for shredding in both directions and avoids chipping. (seeing this post). SpaceCase doesn't have this but probably shreds very good as well.

Is getting chipped aluminum in your bud then vaping it a legitimate concern? In that case maybe titanium is better.

So many questions, so ignorant on this topic. hah :freak:

Danger Zone!
This is my Spacecase titanium, I purchased it in 2010.

As you can see the finish is no longer flawless, granted I do tap the lid against the base so a lot of it is my fault.

The internals are still in fantastic, the teeth are still in excellent condition with no deforming and the screen is still as taunt as the day I brought it.

Overall its been a great grinder, the finish is far from indestructible but then that's only a cosmetic issue.

I have a small space case 4pc that was "free" with one of the vapes I bought. It works fine, but it's small so my giant man-hands need something much much bigger.

Finally got to use the Large 4-piece SCS that I bought through MassDrop a while back. It is every bit as good as many people have said. I love the way it fluffs the herb and look forward to trying some out in my Cloud tonight.

I find it to be better than my large 4-piece Space Case in every way save one. I have fairly large hands, and this "large" SCS seems more like a "medium" compared to the SC. I know most people prefer this size or even smaller, but it just feels a bit undersized to me.

I'm hoping that there is a MassDrop for the "Jumbo" SCS one of these days as the price for the Jumbo is fairly high. Since that one is just a tad larger than my current large SC, I think that will be the absolute sweet spot I am looking for in grinders/shredders.

But, other than the size issue I have...great job Santa Cruz...a really nice piece of workmanship!:):2c:

Nice post Shrike. I think I'm going to get a Santa Cruz grinder as well.

I am kind of a paranoid health person and have one really weird thought though. What if over time the aluminum chips off into the bud, and then you vape/smoke it at high temperatures? That'd be bad.

Can anybody explain to me why this (hopefully) isn't a valid concern?

I've read that it's a valid concern with grinders made of cheap Chinese aluminium (especially because they often have design flaws where the teeth and/or other parts make contact in the grinding motion) but not with the high-end anodized aluminium ones. If your buds can break those apart I'd be more worried about your dealer.
