With the potential shipping costs already in mind when I first emailed, I asked them if they could send just the part I needed. They didn't answer that question unfortunately.. I will ask again now..

Yes I did try the dial without the knob. I took the whole vaporizer apart and put it back together again, it is definitely the dial that is at fault.

Well...after taking my ssv to 2 electrical shops this morning and being told that they couldn't help, as the potentiometer (dial) looks to be specially made for the ssv, I thought sod it, and took it apart again. This time carefully opening up the potentiometer as well, and after a bit of head scratching, poking, prodding, etc...I found the little bit of metal that was meant to be acting as a stopper, wasn't stopping anything. So I bent it up a little, and hey presto...it works! With working temp control too! Well Happy!! :D

Now I just have to wait for my new HC to arrive, then let the good times roll!

Its also good to know that heater covers and such are available from UK retailers in case you didn't know already

Soooooooo tempted to make the SSV my next vaporizer purchase!! I took a look at their site and they have a list of authorized distributors - but only in the US and Israel. Anyone know if there are any authorized dealers in the UK? I have sent them an e-mail to ask, but have only so far received an automated response stating how busy they are and that they'll get back to me soon. TIA :) :peace:

Well, TIA. I would use amazon, or fleebay in that situation. Make sure you get the hands free wand though, I had to use copper wire and fabricate my own HFD. What was your first vape?

You can buy one from many places including everyonedoesit. My friend was so desperate for one we called them and they let us drive down and buy one from their warehouse....... of course we took all the standard road trip precautions :spliff:

@(We'll call him B) - I actually got my 1st vape - a Solo - from Amazon. I've heard Arizer honours the warrantees for units bought from there and e-bay, so when I saw it cheaper on there I snapped it up.

I did however notice the following on the SSV website:
http://silversurfervap.com/silver-surfer-vaporizer-information/retailers.html

Silver Surfer® Vaporizers purchased from Ebay that are not sold under the 7thFloorSales account are not covered by warranty in any way, shape or form. Also, vaporizers purchased from the following are NOT covered by our warranty. We strongly advise against purchasing the Silver Surfer® vaporizer from these sellers:
  • -amazon.com
  • -overstock.com
  • -cheapvape.com
  • -dabuddhavaporizer.net (despite the name, this is NOT a 7th Floor, LLC site)
That's why I asked whether there are any UK based authorised retailers - just in case I am unfortunate enough to need that warrantee. :)

@technique - sounds like you had one mighty fun mission there :brow: :D ....... Do you know whether everyonedoesit.com is covered by 7th Floor's warrantee?

Cheers for the suggestions both :) :peace:

I have never been good at reading fine print. Lucky me the amazon one with the warranty was cheaper, or I might have bought the fleebay one.

I've seen the blems on ebay before, from 7th floor I think.

Yeah thanks, I noticed them too and haven't ruled them out yet - but I'd hate to have to cough up 15% extra in reddies to Customs if there's a legit dealer based here ;)

I have no idea to be honest, if its any consolation I bought mine direct from 7th floor but with shipping costs and the sheer simplicity of the product I never intend to send it back and will be trying a diy repair instead. The cost to ship it there and back is almost as much as the unit itself lol

Danger Zone!
Finally read all the way to the end of the thread, all 191 pages. I won't lie it took a while. :)

Hi everybody, long time SSV user here I brought my unit back in 2010 and it's still going.

Sadly a few months ago the “head” dropped off my unit original heater cover and ever since then it has been under performing. I have purchased and installed two different replacement covers and neither of the seem to provide the heat that the original did. I am pretty sure that I am seating the covers correctly using the shims (I removed the original cover 3-4 times over the three years for cleaning and never have issues reseating it)

I also tried on of the suspect covers no my LSV and found that it I had to turn the unit to 100% power to get it to vape, when normally I vape at around 11pm on the dial. Now granted the LSV was never designed to take that heater cover but is it a good indication that the covers are to blame?

Or could it just be the age of the unit?

Just ordered the oil kit from 7th Floor so when that turns up I hope that works ok, if it does I might just turn my SSV into a dedicated oil machine, but I if possible I would like to get it working again as a regular vape.

Also do the old style aroma tops work with the oil kit? I hope so.

Lastly a big thanks to all of the people who have contributed to the thread, kudos to you all. :)

Can you post an image of the Heater Cover showing the intake and exhaust holes?

Hmm they really don't look that different now that I'm looking closely. The blue ones Intake is larger than the rest it's just not apparent at that angle.

Hmm, yeh they look pretty similar. I'd check that the heating element hasn't slipped down as that may have been bumped in the replacement process. How does the HE look when you turn it on? Does it still light up to a bright orange like it used to?

The aroma top will not be fit on your ssv if you have the oil heater cover installed. At least with mine it didn't.

I pull up the heating cover by about a centimeter when installing then use the pick to push it down from the glass, I leave about 4mm clearance from the top.

HE looks alright, the very very tip (top 2-3mm) doesn't glow much but besides that its still seems pretty strong. Then again by memory even when I first got it the top of the tip never did glow a lot.

That is a bit of a shame but they were only cheap, thanks for the info.

That was my next suggestion,

Also make sure you are shoving the HC all the way down, as close to touch the heating element on the inside.

My theory is that the size of the intake hole and its location can really impact performance. Does the hole sit even with or below the orange glow on your element?

That is normal. Maybe try it w/o pushing the element down. IMO, the more element inside the HC, the more heat the glass can retain.

This seems to be the only difference between your unit and mine. Could it be that excess air is being sucked in from underneath the heater cover? The only thing that doesn't look uniform about your HCs are the bases...
Otherwise I'm outta ideas :\

Yes Tweak I was pushing the HC all the way down till it was resting on the screws and the intake sits a little below the start of the glow.

I might try leaving less clearance next time inside the HC, say a picks width.

I also have a GG HC and a spare LSV HC I could try, they seem to have less variables in the design so maybe they might help trouble shoot the problem further.

The bases are not uniform it's true but they all seem about as misshapen as each other, the original HC wasn't perfect in this regard.
