The HI

Never thought I'd be on the Internet looking for wood. Man, can that last sentence sound any gayer? (Not that there's anything wrong with that...) lol :)

These vapes are so beautiful and unique, I'm going to buy two, one for me and another for my wife (a non-user) for a scent warmer and backup. I mean how can you browse this thread and not say, "I have to fucking have one of those"? It's almost impossible.

Just wait till you start sucking on wood. Try explaining that one.

@ogcook -
@Dr. Plutonious if you were local we could have a threeway of Hi Porn!

I would be so down :(

With that said, I have a very, very slightly used HI on the way thanks to mestizo. I am incredibly excited. It is literally the perfect thing to make the rest of the waiting list tolerable before I can order my own HI.

My new M&M Tech Slyme Custom which I've been only able to power with a Davinci at the moment is very excited.

Alright - I'm working on the vids. That Hi sundrk is beautiful. Welcome to the club, I assume you've been readying yourself to begin your JedHi training....

Isn't sucking wood a gateway to the sucking of other things....

mvapes - Thanks for all the HI porn. Some amazing glass configurations.

Papa Woody - Glad you are still enjoying your HIsaber. That amboyna burl is some amazing wood.

ogcook - Glad you got to try a HI. It may make the wait tougher though.

sundrk - Thanks for posting the photos of the latest amboyna burl units. I enjoy working with that wood although it can be a bit brittle and takes some extra care when working. Wish it wasn't so expensive.

Medivape - The minimum I need is 1.5" x 1.5" x 3.75". If you want one with a matching bottom cap it should be more like 4.5" long. 10" long would be enough for 2 units. I might be able to use blanks as small as 1.3" square. The wood is much more affordable in these smaller sizes.

Ed - Thanks for the kind words. Looking forward to seeing some work off that new lathe.

CentiZen - It is the Heat Island core that contains the heat island technology. The PD shell could theoretically accept a new Heat Island core. It was the PD core that was causing all of the wood charring. It is more of a heat sink than a heat exchanger. Adding glass beads to the heating element wires would allow it to use a single entry point between the upper and lower cavities. It should function exactly as a HI with the HI core since the heating element is identical. It would be a Purple Island.

Dr. P - Congratulations. Welcome to the JedHI order.

So I finally broke down and purchased a power meter to see how much the HI is pulling. I am getting a reading around 9 watts with a little over 12 volts applied. That is way more than I thought. No wonder the HI runs so hot. I wanted to see how my modified LSV compared at my desired dial position. It is running at 13 watts. The HI seems to be a bit more efficient at producing the hot air for roasting since it has the same performance at a lower wattage. My GTV was running at around 28 watts with full voltage applied. The LSV was drawing 36 watts at full dial position. No wonder it is so easy to combust above a dial position of 12 o'clock.

I was asked if I could make a HI with only the power cord entering the wood in a small hole rather than the metal power socket. The threaded hole for the power socket is a pain in the ass to make, so I thought I would try the cord into the wood. I had some short extension cords that were sent by mistake so I cut one up and made a HI with a short tail. There is a knot tied in the wire to keep it from pulling out of the wood and it is soldered directly to the heating element wires. SS screws hold everything in place. The tail can be about any length. This one is made from a piece of Blood Wood that was too short for a regular HI. It is only 3.5" tall and was a perfect candidate to test. I have some other 3.5" blanks that may get the same treatment some day.
I have started soldering the wires together in all of the HI's for a better electrical connection.

I would guess over time the cable connection going into the wood will fray with repeated handheld use. Have you considered some kind of plastic sleeve / stress protection at that opening? Or what if you made the pigtail with some kind of nice cable jacket that would reduce stress (color options?).

Does anyone use their HI like a traditional log vape / like the solo? Basicly with the stem in a vert position and the material resting along the bottom screen on the HI. Lets say I'm using the turbo tube. Allan recommend the HI be used as heater with the stem held in a horz position like a cigar and only connecting the HI to the stem for draws. I'm looking for a stem option where I can use the unit like a solo, have the HI sitting on table, etc. and pick it up with the stem already in it and draw (~10min session). Would this be possible or would it get too hot and combust? Alternately I could use a VVPS and reduce the voltage, does anyone have experience with this style / setup?

Thanks!

It should work fine. Alan sells tubes (made out of a variety of different materials) just for that reason. Most people I think use the HI with glass because it has the power for big glass pieces and the fact most of us love glass, but it should work fine with a plain tube all the same. Alan actually made me some Purple Days tubes and that is how I used em, no glass or anything.

I was put on the list in June 2012, just got word that my HI is complete. I just need to decide which roasting tube to get. Any recommendations? I currently have a solo with eds wood stem. I'll be using the HI with a 14mm bubbler. So it's between the "u tube" and the 14mm full GoG tube, $10 vs $30. There's just so many options, ss, glass, silicone, and wood bowls.

I was thinking about getting the GoG 14mm and a turbo tube. Or could I do the u tube and add a glass stem for non-water use? The silicone seems nice as it allows you to roll the bowl contents with your fingers to mix and grind.

I've tried quite a few combinations with the HI. I vote for (1) U-Tube, (1) Turbo Tube and (1) Silicone Tube with SS Tip. If you can splurge, Alan makes a terrific WonG that fits both 14mm and 18mm female glass pieces.

I've only used an all glass tube (heater core fits in it) and the glass/ss tip(fits in core). Both work great.

And my zap shorty on the infamous bubbler.
I have 4 -5 I've never used yet (bamboo my matching stem)and nipples . But I love my HI. Get home from 10 day vacation tomorrow. :)

Thanks mom, al bundy, vapinghole, and jeppy. Glad I was able to make something of that piece of wood.

sundrk - I have thought about maybe a silicone sleeve where it goes through the wood. The black insulation is covering red and white insulated wires. The black insulation is already providing some protection for the wires. I will put this through some testing to see how it fares. It wouldn't be that difficult to replace the wire if necessary.

GBO - Glad to have you aboard. The wait will certainly be worth it.

In 1977 unbeknownst to me, I was beginning my search for the true JedHI lifestyle. :rockon:This very sound resonated from a small future JedHI's living quarters. It all began on the Darkside of the Galaxy. :argh:
Ha ha Jeppy I related to this - same music and experience for me when I was a kid starting this journey. Where is my solar powered, laser beam vape?

I've only had my HI for a short period. But I love it so much. Wish I would've bought 2. I was on the list for over a year. And it was definitely worth the wait. The HI is so small. But it hits like a beast and feels so nice in my hands.

Alan's customer service is top notch! If you're currently on the list for an HI, trust me you will not be disappointed.
