Hope you feel brighter soon @Dreamerr

Interesting point you raise about conduction v convection. Was there not some talk of passive conduction? Or something like that. I think its safe to say there is a lot of conduction going on either way, but the way it rips vs vapes away when left alone suggest some convection? No?

I'm rolling right now and I've never been so anxious to hear the next instalment of mind baffling, yet oh so interesting data reading from @OF don't let me down bud

I know this has been asked a thousand times but what are the step for reclaiming with iso? Is it just pour some in the stem, shake, then leave it out to evaporate?

Yep. You can run the iso through a coffee filter before evaporating to make it slightly cleaner if you so wishi

If i recall correctly it takes a lot longer if you use coffee filters? Can the whole process be finished in a couple hours?

Anyhow my question to you OF is in your opinion how much convection vs conduction do you think the solo is? I know when I have left my herb in the solo burning on 3 and unused it got brown but vaped as normal when I did a new session. Taste did suffer but not meds IMO. The same thing happened with the pinnacle which I did on purpose to test.

Excellent question. Like many great questions, no simple answer I think? As you point out, left alone it definitely works on the stuff it has against (or very near) the cup. It turns dark. But it clearly isn't getting too far into the load in such cases, the color is more normal and the THC is remaining. The hottest thing in the area is the bowl I think. Yes, points in the heater are hotter, but for our purposes that metal is probably the place to start. Being metal, it's all basically the same temperature. Heat is transferred by conduction to the load and then airflow is used to spread it around within the load happens. Something like MFLB where shaking distributes the heat after conduction delivers it?

I think much the same thing happens in most vapes, like say Vapor Blunt? For the most part convection vapes use significantly higher than vaping temperature heat sources to heat the air so it's the hottest thing in the load, VG and Cera LL being examples. There's also a class I think that tries to deliver well controlled temperature air by using a temperature controlled mass with lots of surface area so that basically all the airflow is the same temperature. HA and Volcano I think are examples?

In reality, as you suggest, I think they all have very common element 'of both schemes' and maybe even a little radiation thrown in to keep it fresh?

I think convection vapes might be identified where the heat source is remote from the load with only hot air between? I don't think that's what we have here.

So back to your question, I think (almost) all the heat arrives by conduction. Convection distributes it and definitely plays a role as the heat is removed (as I saw with the last experiment, it's the reason the temperature drops so fast when I stop hitting it, it's being sucked out the wire leads still but not replaced by hot air going past from below)?

Interesting point you raise about conduction v convection. Was there not some talk of passive conduction? Or something like that. I think its safe to say there is a lot of conduction going on either way, but the way it rips vs vapes away when left alone suggest some convection? No?

Thanks, glad folks take an interest. I think a 'layman's recap' might be worth a try.

I think you're thinking passive convection not conduction. As opposed to active convection. Passive is where the hot air (water, oil or other 'working fluid') is mechanically moved from source to load by virtue of gravity. That is the hot stuff rises to be replaced by the cooler. Often termed 'thermal siphon'. Forced convection is usually fan or pump driven. A teapot is passive convection, your car engine active for instance.

Yes, there's not doubt a little passive convection, but notice how the bottom gets darker than the top? To me that means it's hotter down there.

Whatever the reason, don't leave it standing? In cases like HA, this effect is much less since the source is so much further away when the airflow stops.

Coffee filtering will add maybe 20 minutes on to the total process. 2 hours should be plenty. The only part which may take longer is the evap but that can be done discreetly if that is your issue.

@OF those high temp session really have destroyed you today haven't they

Great info again mate. I can never leave my solo for more than 20 seconds so I have no issues with the load burning away.. just my brain

Crap this was a quote and it is gone so it didn't take...it was referring to your empty post ugh.

So basically most of our vapes are conduction leaning but then some like the pax and ascent very much cook the herbs without help. I ran only two vapes with herb on my desired temp and the herb throughout gets brown. You reported just the bottom on the solo but that is not what I found but I only did it once I think and with the solo it wasn't on purpose. So that lends to the question since most lean conduction according to your thoughts why are some vapes using up way more herb, not medicating as well, and depleting the goodies out of the load if not toking?

Bow just make hot chocolate then. Evap will depend on your climate and if you use heat to speed it up. Some say heating pads but to me the top of the fridge is hot so it works as well. I haven't used it to evap but have used it to germinate. You can also just scrap the oil out and use it as you please with no wait.

ah ok. Yes, possibly.Use as little iso as possible. Use hot water baths to speed the process up. I shouldn't have to say this as I'm sure you are no fool but don't purge, i.e. remove the solvent, indoors. Take the kettle outside and refresh the water every so often (obviously the warmer the water is kept the quicker it'll be).

edit: or yeah do as Dreamerr suggested. I warn you though it tastes digusting. Mine did anyway

Wow, you wrote and worked alot to figure out temp is dependant on draw. Ever load a bowl crank it up to 6 then have the phone ring or something, forget about the solo and then when you hear the beep as it turns off you grab it and the bowl has just toasted it self up? I have. I think it gets extra hot if you just let it sit, while on. I've lost a few bowls like this.

I have the same experience , when I don't hit it or draw cool air thru the Solo .
It can get quite hot to hold , I've never measured the temp of the heating chamber tho .
But I know the difference in touch when left unattended as to being used at level 6 and 7 .
Also , I'm strictly talking about when it's been on for about an hour or so , not the first
couple of sessions . With the PA , I've been known to do a 2 hour bender with my Solo , watching
sports or tv .

I just ran my Solo for 5 and a half hours straight last night. I'm testing Tim's PA and wanted to see how many bowls I could get out of one charge while using the PA. I can confirm poonman's experience in that the Solo gets pretty fuckin' how if let run for long periods with no draws. I don't expect most people to run their Solo for that long, though.

FWIW, after 28 back to back 12-minute sessions the battery was still showing 3 lights.

wow, I usually get 6-7 sessions out of my half year old solo of which I always suspected they turned it on in the shop without charging beforehand... :spliff:

No Problem at home thanks to an PA but what's the best way to "train" the battery back up ?

If interested I strongly disagree with OF on the Solo being mostly conduction... The vapor production in conduction vaporizers is decreasing as you draw, even at a steady pace. PAX is producing vapor exactly like this for instance. It starts as a thig white fog and it thins out as you suck.
Log vapes on the other hand work with convection air and if the heater can keep up with the draw the vapor production is steady until the herbs start to dry out. Vapor production here starts from nothing and it gradually thickens, then it remains steady and is slowly thinning out as the herbs dry out.
Our Solo now depending on how long you preheat it can start with conduction produced vapor, pass to a steady vapor production and gradually thinning it out. Or it can go full convection with no preheat and gradually build vapor at the beginning of the draw then even out and so on. Radiation also plays a more vital role than conduction IMO... If conduction played a major role herb close to the glass screen of the stem wouldn't be greener as it's almost next to the walls of the heating bowl. At least the sides of the load would always be darker. Not so with the Solo where the center of the load is usually darker than the sides touching the herb. How long you suck also plays it's role. Long draws favor convection production whereas small draws with standing times between favor radiation and conduction vapor.

Just my two cents on the topic after many observations on how vapor builds up using various vapes and the vapor lung where you can emulate very long hits with variable draw and have full visual assessment.

You may disagree with "OF" however I respectfully disagree with you.

For one you have the worse tasting vaporizers know to the human race.

I love cannabis and it's flowers should be treated with respect.

The burnt pop corn flavors that your vaporizers produce for me personally are unacceptable.
Then again you may like their flavor profile?

It could be the disconnect with the medical consumer verses the recreational user?

Please forgive me if I jumped in to a can of worms!

In my testing and when done if I get permission I will post the results but there is a difference with different solos. I was unable to do any testing today because of my health but I am above 24 sessions still on 7 level battery on the stock PA with the M102 solo which in my testing is out performing my M1A3 which doesn't even work with either Tim's or Pipes PA. Could I have a bad solo, maybe but it works with the stock PA just fine but not as good as the 102. Again when testing is done I will post if I am given permission.

Stu that is my typical usage pattern and my 1A3 never gets hot while my 102 does. I vaped non stop yesterday from early in the morning to 2am. The only unusual part about that is I normally, if I don't go out, start later in the day as I can bare to suffer longer. There are days when I can't. Today I just slept instead and just woke up as I pissed off to many people.

Bow I guess you never saw my stem lol. It is golden to the max with no bits. It isn't complete as I can't get the last bit of the stem to smooth out cause the heat doesn't get up that high. It does have many drops of oil up high though. If I so desired I bet a hairblower would smooth it out but of course the only point would be for show. I have a huge thick band of oil around about 1/4 from the top. I will certainly have to weigh it if I ever get around to reclaiming it. I can't even remember how long it has been but no less then 4 months and we all know I vape a lot but I don't use water so that matters.
Ok for fun here it is as of right now.

Hey guys...I can't tell you how much I appreciate your support!!!
Just FYI, my birthday was on the 26th and they came on the 27th...what a lovely birthday present!

It really was the worst week of my life...and also I put my GF in a very bad place since she is a lawyer who has nothing to do with it...I have made some serious mistakes and I would pay for it...however I have been talking with some friends and it might not be as bad as I thought...I won't go to jail...
I will be going to some doctors to see if I can get some medicament for my pains

You guys are the best, I love you guys! I hope you all stay here forever and ever, I will be back one day but I need to get out of this mess first, I will tell the whole story when its behind me

Thank you so much for the kind words, if I could cry I would do that, I remember how hard I tried to let my emotions go after being arrested but I just couldn't ... first few days felt like hell but at least I was let go...for now.
