QWISO problem/Issue/Advice please

Krizzle

Hi Very high
So my first go at making some QWISO just to try and get a method down really. I have a
Solo travel tube filled with ISO oil (70%) that I use to soak my Solo stems/GonG's in. I have had the same bit of ISO for months now and finally got round to getting some unbleached coffee filters, pyrex dish, razer blades etc..

LAQrtD6.jpg

So after pouring the iso through the coffee filter to keep all the bits of plant crap out the iso in the pyrex dish is turning a funny chocolate colour? Picture shows better but its my guess the ISO has stripped some of the coffee filter stuff off? It looks the same colour if that makes sense. Is this possible? Have I fucked up somewhere? Should I have used 2 filters or something? Has the 20% water content fucked it all and should I just ditch or is there anything salvagable? This dish is sitting on the balcony outside, is that cool for it to evaporate off? I have a half full mason jar of ABV and a 2 liter bottle of 99.9% ISO that I want to make oil with eventually but wanted to test this small batch first.....any help/advice appreciated thank you.

Formerly me2
iso is an oxidizer, so it will rust up blades and metal stored in it.
nothing from the filters.
the chocolate milk is from 2 things.
decarbed oil/reclaim and the water content.
evap it off till no more fumes of iso then to the freezer.
after a few minutes the oil will harden but the water will still flow.
tilt the dish around a bit to get the water moving.
pour it out.
let oil evap/dry out in a dark dry location for a few days.

or fan on low blowing across the dish.

either way
enjoy.

Hi Very high
Thanks for quick reply, glad to hear I can still use it :) how long should it take the ISO to evaporate before freezing? I guess I wont have the same problem with using 99.9& ISO then? If I smell it and it doesn't smell of alcohol am I good to put it in the freezer? It is outside and its warm and windy today so I am hoping to get it in the freezer late this evening about 5hrs from now.

like me2 said it is most likely the water content in your iso, if you let a little plain iso sit out to evaporate you will notice it turn milky before it is fully evaporated that is probably what is causing the chocolate color there. I personally would want to know what type of plastic the travel tubes and cap are before a stored any iso in it long term though. iso is a fairly aggressive solvent and if it is the wrong plastic it can leach contaminants into your iso/oil mix and you wouldn't want to inhale those fumes, especially after it gets concentrated by the evaporation process.

edit: when I evap my reclaim though, I do the exact opposite of me2 and put my pan on the oven on 170 (lowest setting possible) for about 15 minutes so I am sure the water (along with any remaining iso) is fully evaporated, but that is only after I have evaporated the iso to the point that I don't smell any alcohol even when I stick my nose close and take a big whiff.

Shit, I am complete noob to this concentrate game and didn't think about the plastic of the travel tubes..shitter!

Does anyone know anything about the plastic in these tubes? I would say its been about 3months the same bit of ISO in this travel tube. EDIT: Looking on PV website they are made from a material called PET. They do say its OK to fill with ISO and use as a cleaning tube but obviously nothing about what I have done. I am looking into chemical compatibility charts now.....

I found very little online about long term exposure but one answer I did find is that PET is fairly safe for regular exposure to iso but long term exposure can cause crazing due to the dissolution of plasticizers.

here is the link to the answer I found. Now we all knoweverything on the iinternet is true lol, but the answer seemed very intelligently written and the writer appears to know his/her stuff but take it for what is worth abd remember, chances are what you would inhale if your smoked is probably worse than the little amount of contaminants in your reclaim

Hi Very high
Thanks for the answers guys, know I don't know what to do with this stuff in case it is contaminated. I don't plan on smoking it when its done but did want to give it a go in my Solo sandwiched between some herb. Is it not worth the risk? Should I sling it?

Hi Very high
as i get older i find myself erring on the side of caution, but you could always try a little.

Haha I think I 'll try a small piece and see what happens lol I know this stuff isnt meant to taste good anyway.....hmm decisions eh haha

I would take a close look at the tube and if there is any crazing I would just get rid of the reclaim but if it looks spotless I might give it a try abd see how it tastes or if it gives me a headache. I know just looking at the tube alone won't tell you for sure that it is good but can tell you that it definitely isn't.

Hi Very high
Have to admit the tube looks fine so ill give it a go

Edit: reporting back, this is how we stand. There is a very thin sticky goodness layer along the bottom and then the choc milk in the corner. I am leaving it outside over night and will scrape in the morning :mental: will avoid the milk part though :dog:

Hi Very high
All that choc milk has gone this morning :) so I am just left with a thin sticky glaze across the bottom. Time for a scrape and vape! :smug: This is the finished product, very dark and sticky. Tried some in with some herb in my solo and all was well  no headaches....

Ok now this is the 4th time tryn qwiso..my 1st run was trim n leaves which turnd out garbage(didnt even smoke it)...the 2nd was a reclaim run..(lsv wand) an 3grinders..that stuff smelld really good but was very sticky.i couldnt touch it witout it stickn to me..the third was 9g of stems off of nugs..an that was my best yield yet..it had that amber look an pliable like taffy.also not as sticky...The pic below is my 4th run which was bout 9g of shake..I was hoping it wud better than the stems but its not as amber an texture is in btwn taffy and a sticky sap...im jus wondering wat I gota do to get a shatter like texture or somethin thats not sooo sticky(I have pics of my other runs aswell)

I prefer THIS process for shatter results with qwiso:

Thanks smokum an yes i seen that vid b4...im still at that trial an error stage n tryn to fig wat works best ....after my 2nd run I startd freezin my stuff an noticed the yield was lil better..but I dont run it thru filters 3diff times. ..I jus run it thru 2 brown filters an let it evap on a electric griddle then scrape..my nxt run ill try that an wat eva else I learn

I typically strain the rough thru a basic kitchen cullender/strainer after a 20 second wash into another mason, then that thru a double coffee filter. The key is a short wash time, and very low heat to purge (I prefer a double boiler over direct heat on my dish). Of course, the more you try to 'clean up' your product, it will obviously take away from your return/yield..... but I guess it boils down to a matter of what one is looking to achieve AND what one can afford for play materials if purchasing goods for concentrate making.

smokum,
Yea I keep my washes to like15-30sec...an I have 2pyrex dishes an do the double boil thing on my griddle cuz it gets too hot if u jus put it directly on it......now is it suppose to sizzle Wen u dab it?

Truthfully, I find that hot tap water in a double boiler is as hot as you need to go. The griddle makes it a little less work, but if your vessel gets over 125F you're hurting your oil. I find my hot tap water comes out at 120-130F, which after heat transfer loss sits at 120F at the highest and depending on your set up, should only take a few water switches to make it all work. Low and slow is the key with making all oils, IMO... if you are making oil to smoke later that day/night, you are much more likely to cut corners or be impatient with mistakes.

I use a DIY syringe solution (gotta get some syringe filters soon enough) with a 60ml oral syringe that you can get at almost any pharmacy for a couple bucks. Cut off the luer lock end and drill holes to ease pressure, then hose clamp some brown filters and some silkscreen mesh over the end of it. Push your ISO though after a simple screening of the fine material (i use a gold mesh coffee filter) and through the syringe for a very easy, clean, and fast extraction. You lose far less material to the filters and it's really fast as opposed to letting it 'drip through' a couple filters.

We have a guide on reddit at /r/qwisoinfo if you wanna check it out! Good luck!

Noob question: I soaked all my jars and grinder in 91% ISO and got some decent tasting gooey hash. Only I hated the high and would not bother again if that is what you always end up with. Is there a quick wash method that won't end up with such a down high buzz product? I figure that full trichs has to be a better starting point than reclaim (that is what you guys are concentrating right?) but not sure at all.
Did soaking too long ruin it or is this typical product?

It's typically quality in-quality out. If you're using the remnents of stashes and old, crusty kief built up on your grinder as starting material, your oil isn't going to be the best. It will still kick your ass, but I wouldn't expect it to have the flavor or color of a run off prime nugs, imo...

I really don't care about the flavor. It was better than I expected even...nice hash taste. It was the high that was bunk.
And to clouded vision...I am not using reclaim. I just figured that was what most here were using qwiso for. I am using crusty old kief - mostly sativa.
Some directions I have read indicate very short soaking periods so I thought maybe it was too long that I soaked. Seems like it wouldn't make that much of a difference but who knows? And it soaks plenty long getting the alcohol to evaporate. I guess a hot plate would speed it up but I am wondering if I am wasting my time and will always end up with CBD/CBN high dominance. I liked the taste but would prefer to keep a natural high than the feeling I got

Longer wash time will not degrade the strength, as the short wash times are for color/flavor effects more than anything else. I have found my oil to be similar to what you describe when I clean my grinders and other containers with any sort of residue, but if i'm making oil from good nugs its a whole lot better. That's all I meant by 'quality in, quality out'. If you're using scraps, it'll hit like scraps.

Most here are using QWISO techniques on regular buds like what you would vape or smoke. ISO can be an aggressive solvent (hence the short wash times), but if you learn how to handle it, it can turn out some great hash oil (as good as BHO taste & effect wise, imo.... color can be a step down tho)...
