(Cut the bottom of the bottle, make a hole in the cap)

I just launched this extraction. The coconut oil takes a long time to melt, I'll be back with the results.

Edit : it just started to drip some green gold :)

you'll prob have to press plant material to get all the oil out, so i'm wondering if just using a pan and a strainer/press afterwards would be easier (cutting glass out can be a chore).

kudos for experimenting, is there a reason you want to avoid a pan simmer instead?

Yes cutting the glass is not easy, I had to do a bunch of bottles before I get it right

The idea was to try the non pressed product, less irritant material should come off while keeping high active concentration. I don't plan to throw it away, I keep everything, next time I'll add some fresh avb and more coconut oil and it's going to drip some good again. When I'm sure its very done I'll press it to the max to get everything out of course.

Also its very low heat there, max 40°C. Really difficult to stabilize this kind of temperature without this infrared tray. Imo the pan method would lead to use more heat, it fasten the process but requires more attention.

Once you have the bottle it's really convenient and easy, I tried a lot of methods and this one seems like less of a chore already. Product drips ready to use, you can consume it right now.

Straining is kind of annoying, you have to stain some cotton or use disposable filters. If you press with screens plant material comes out

Letting the process working by itself seems like the best when you're searching for quality. Maybe with the heat, all the oil its going to drip, I don't know. That may be really efficient

I used to cut glass like that all the time when I was a kid 45years ago and if I find the right bottle I might try this, looks very promising. We used to cut the bottoms off bottles to make aquariums and glasses using a string and rubbing alcohol , soak the string in the alcohol, tie it tight around the bottle were you want to cut it. light in on fire, let it burn and get really hot , then dip the lit bottle into the coldest ice water you can get and the lid would just fall right off. should work for this.
I w like to try something with the 300 + grams of abv I have accumulated.

To cut the bottle I also used cold on hot shock (to make it hot I used a candle, that rope method sounds better), then straight in cold water, pop out. This and a glass cutting tool to mark a circle where you want it to cut (edit : Buildozer : I use some tape to guide the glass cutting tool to make a good circle score without the specialized bottle cutter, I had seen that video you posted after a couple fails and that was very helpful actually)

All the oil that was on top has melted

Drippin' gold !

The product is a greenish yellow :) A lot has came out, more than I expected and quicker !

i like your idea Roger.. i am curious how the unpressd(less irritant) oil will be.. effect-wise.. also, can you give some numbers? like what weight AVB you started w/, and amount of coconut oil used.. and amount yielded, and time spent. i like the idea of not pressing it.

did you cut your glass w/ water?? EDIT: NEVERMIND. you just answered it.

EDIT: nice pics.. lookin good. looks like it works really nice.
your'e on to something cool man.. i wanna make a mini setup now and use it in the oven at low temps. if/when ever i get around to it ill post back.

what do you guys mean when you say less irritant because of the non-pressing?

Less chlorophylls, plant waxes, or other impurities. These things are know to cause irritation to the lungs and throat when present in your extracts.

thanks,

shouldn't really be an issue with edibles should it? that's why i asked, it's seems like some people might think this coconut oil extract is for smoking or vaping.

i think the only way that pressing would introduce more of these undesirables is if it compromised the filters...in the sense that solvent polarity determines what gets picked up.

It clearly stopped to drip. Waiting for the whole thing to solidify, I dropped a huge sauce spoon of the liquid on top of my cold milk glass. It solidified right away, so I can put it in my crepe just like some butter, avoiding any dripping of the good good

Taste is goddamn fine for AVB that haven't even been water cured, I used to water cure everything to prevent bad taste ! For once I even feel like the thing is adding something good to the taste. You can definitely feel the coconut and the herb, they both go very well with my home made crunchy chocolate.

I dabbed some of my ethanol oil (a bit crappy) on top of that. Start to feel warm and good, loading a bowl on the minivap.

Today I increased the dosage. First I took a spoon, after around 7 hours it was fading away so I took two more. I ended up passing out, I slept like a baby for non interrupted hours when I just wanted to "relax a couple minutes on my bed" ahah

There's plenty left :) And I will get more out of it

For the numbers I didn't weight but by eye I used around 120g of coconut oil, for the herb material was weighted 30g (before vaping).

Also it is tasting good enough to allow eating a straight spoon of it (when you don't have the appetite for a full stuffed crepe or something like that, and want the fastest medication possible), just like you would swallow a pill, with water. You're not left with any bad taste in your mouth that could lead to disgust

thanks,

Properly done edibles will not upset your stomach and that's the main point. Pressing will get more out, but with more crap that's sure, and it's not only about plant material. I will not press till I got out everything I can without. I have never got a product that clean before. I like the idea that it haven't been forced. I could try to find a way to put pressure without touching the material like compressing air on top or something. For the moment I keep everything in place.

What I like about the coconut oil is the food safety factor, I can keep it like that for a while without any problems. This type of fat is the best for conservation and it's solid at room temp so very easy to pick up with a spoon or anything. No need for refrigeration like dairy made butters.

Usually i'll just eat my AVB straight up w/ a fatty meal.. and IMO i get stronger longer lasting results.. but lately iv'e been having stomach problems so i wanted to try this method.. since it was strained by heat and gravity.. i didn't have the most ideal things to use, but decided to wing it and just put the jar w/ AVB and coconut oil upside down on a baking dish and let it seep out from under, while in the oven at 175F.. and it worked pretty well.. if i could go back and do something different, i'd wait about 20 mins to flip the jar.. after it has been in the oven heating up.. i put it straight into the oven upside down.. there wasn't as much exposure time as i would have liked.. i did let it soak just sitting there for ~ten mins pre-oven.. also, forgot to mention my coconut oil happened to be in liquid form from the start of the extraction.. and this time around, my AVB was a lot lighter than it usually is..
2nvypud.jpg

after it was pretty much done draining out of the jar i took it out of the oven and immediately strained it (while holding down the jar) through one coffee filter into a small dish.. this was really easy to deal w/ since when it came out of the oven it was pre-strained pretty well.. there wasn't much to strain out, just tiny particles.. after that i squeezed the rest of the coconut oil out of the AVB, to see how much was left..
ideally, if i had better things to use, i could have avoided having to do this.. since my AVB was sitting at the level of the oil in the dish.. it was sitting in oil..

2ih87r7.jpg
4kv2me.jpg

the gravity strained oil is on the left and the hand strained oil is on the right.. there was not much of the 2nd straining as you can see.. and it was a good amount darker.. i ate that one first.. it was ~1Tbs...
i still haven't tried the lighter oil.. i expect very little to no stomach discomfort though.. i used at least 7 grams of AVB for this.. i plan to use the light stuff as 2 doses through out the day.. i think i'm gonna use it tomorrow w/ a clean slate... or maybe ill decide to eat it before bed.
thanks for posting about it Roger, it's a cool idea.. the way you did it is perfect.. i need to get something like that going for the next time i try.. so i can pack the AVB in better to slow the draining.. and because of the auto straining.. not having to mess around w/ straining is a huge + for me.. i hate that part enough that i just skip the extraction process and eat it whole all the time.. even though it tastes like shit.. it works really well.. IME that's as strong as it gets.. kicks in a little slower though.

yah that was some weak oil haha.. i figured it would be.. next time i'll try and strain it a similar way.. but i'll let it simmer for a while first.. that's where i messed up for sure.. i got ahead of myself there.

Too bad to ear that, my stuff is very potent. I emptied a couple days ago. It's so hot theses days, 34°C in the shade, sky full of chem trails, the coconut oil goes liquid. I just pour it in the bottle and let it do by itself. No need for IR tray this time. Also I improved the upper cap and seal, now it is really tight and stable.

Keep in mind, that material has been impregnated with coconut oil for a very while ! I reuse it again and again.

Nice looking setup Roger, I am going to try this. Anyone know how grinding the ABV in a coffee grinder first would work? Would it filter o.k.? Would it be stronger? Taste? Wondering because I have lots already ground that I would use up first.

Great ! I'd say the AVB is usually fine enough. Fat penetrates. More crushing will get some crap out I think.

i don't want to derail thread but i never knew how good coconut oil was for you. To me it becomes the obvious choice for edibles or balms. there's a ton of info out there on the benefits, don't take my word for it...

to aid with stomach/digestion you can sprinkle in peppermint or other herbs that calm stomach.

i read somewhere that freezing the herbs/oil mix allows for better oil penetration.

some people are allergic to coconut so as always know your body

I want to create a mini setup as well to use in the oven at lowest temps. 1/2 cup of ABV and 1/2 cup of oil.

I'll probably do as Roger did to make the cut - using tape to guide the glass cutting tool, then the hot and cold water.

Has anyone created a mini setup and done this in the oven?

Very cool. Never had coconut oil before, time to try.

I noticed your new seal, does it seal well enough to be air tight casing an air lock and stopping the flow of oil. Just an observation.
