The Wispr units tended toward easy slippage of the internal fuel feed line.
The half dozen units I was exposed to had slower start as well... required many clicks.
The butane always Vector was used...
maybe it was just bad fortune... luck of the draw that made my half dozen units worked with faulty.
Those odds are not good in my books and I will give the Wispr no further thought.
I never had one problem with over a dozen Iolite Classics I have handled.
I still recommend them.

Now i understand your words. thanks for reply.

I only know the WISPR2 device recently ordered directly from iolite and my device requires 2 clicks maximum. In fact i did not indentify the click and though it was one push device.

You can see the level of butane but i dont visualize the form and size of the tank. I did not run some consumption fuel test but WISPR2 rated on 210°C really delivers it comparing by abvs.

From my thin two recent units experience both are reliable as hell. One is 190°C and the another at 210°C, here is my iolite life.

The airflow inhale for iolite classic is tricky as the straw is not perfect so that heat doesn't conduct and there is dilution. I cut some tubing to try with a perfect seal to see.

enjoy iolite.

Professional Procras... I'll finish this later ;-)
I got the WISPR 2 for my grandma and tested it out last night. I think it might be defective :\

I tried two bowls out of it, and both times, it took 5-10+ tries to get it to light. Is that normal or did I end up with a dud?

It's most likely a dud. It should only take one or two clicks to ignite.

Been quite some time since I've checked in on this thread. Always hear about questionable experiences with the original iolites, but I've got to say, after 2 years with this device it is simply great. For the record, I might be one of the lucky one's as I have only ever had one of them. It is a fickle device, and I have simply learned to work on it's time table. Most of the time, it starts within the first half-dozen clicks. That said, I have had to fidgit with it on some occasions. I've found that sometimes giving it a blast of butane AFTER the initial start does it for me. Word of caution, this is in NO WAY recommended by the company, but it works for me.

Seems like every time I come on the FC sight, they are advertising some new gadget or gizmo. Many is the time that I've been tempted to try some of the newer stuff (can you say Pax?) but every time I fire up the iolite and after a few moments forget about it.

Observations over the years? Here are a few...

• It doesn't like the cold. If I'm going to use it when it gets below about 50f, I usually make certain and have it in my pocket for at least 30 minutes prior to attempting to light it.
• ALWAYS let it heat up for 5 minutes before adding the herb.
• LISTEN closely to it when starting. I usually have it next to my ear (like a cell phone) to determine when it actually takes off (. I've also noticed that occasionally it needs to be re-started between the first burn and the second.
• If you take a pair of pliers and CAREFULLY bend the bowl a bit (a VERY little bit, mind you), it will NOT slip out. This is important as I've had the bowl come out when passing it via the stem to a comrade.
• ALWAYS use quality butane. Many swear by Vector, and I've used it a lot, but the new larger cans of Calibri seem better (faster launches).

I spend a LOT of time outdoors, on the water (salt water!) and this unit has withstood the test of time in that environment. I'm sure some of the battery operated devices might work find for my urban brothers, but if you're into the outdoors, I haven't found a better vape than these units. The ability to keep it running for days and days on a single can of butane makes it absolutely indispensable.

As a side note, I also have an Extreme Q (which I love very much) but the iolite is my go too on a daily.

It is NOT for everyone. I don't recommend it for the impatient. I don't recommend it for those who are not outdoor junkies. I don't recommend it for those who are in a hurry.

I do, however, recommend it first and foremost for anyone who is into being outside. Hiking the AT or fishing the Gulf all day? This is the ONLY way to go.

I like it too, and I think it is underrated. Like you I might be one of the lucky ones but it has been a reliable and consistent performer. It was my first vape and I still trot it out sometimes. The only serious drawback for me is that its not really a one hitter when out and about. Its more a session vape, as it will continue to cook once its started. I like your tips. Very solid. I solved the tumbling bowl problem by looping a hair tie over the stem. I also added a couple of inches of silicon tubing between the stem and the mouthpiece to make it a little more secure.

I agree, it's ABSOLUTELY a session vape, and not a one hitter. But, for me, I am really into "sessions" as it's my companion on all out door adventure. Suppose it goes to state of mind.

Like your idea about the hair tie. Wouldn't have thought of that since I started shaving my head at the turn of the century! LOL!

I was able to find a small 3 oz can of Calibri at a head shop. Along with a little ground herb in a medicine bottle and the Iolite, that's really all you need for outdoor adventures.

I have a couple small tanks, clear plastic, that came filled with 'brand X' gas (one even had white specs floating inside it.....). They were like a dollar or two each at the local smoke shop. I dumped the gas (outside of course), purged the tanks a few times with fresh Vector gas, finally filling them back up with Vector. It takes some fiddling with nozzles to find one that seals well enough to fill, but it works well when you do that.

Now I have 'traveling stash' of gas in 15 gram lots, enough for five refills IIRC.

OF, what do you think of the Iolite?

Big fan. I have two, actually. I like it well enough to have a backup which I keep loaded up with a tank of gas and some herb, ready for a grab on the way somewhere.

I've also recommended them to several friends. I like .125 grams (I preweigh in vials) but like to put about .050 (or a bit more bubble hash in the middle. Makes it go and go and go.....

Just ordered the VG stem, and will play!

Hi,
I had been after a wispr for a while, but after reading the wise advice of this forum, I decide to order an orange iolite. I already have a tracking number so I hope it will arrive soon.

About that stem, I didn't know he made them, is it a special order you made?

He made them for a while, and possibly has some left in stock.
He might also if he does not have any in stock, make some for you... send him a PM.

I am imagining you cut this Volcano pad.
If you are willing, please describe the method used to cut the pad
to a good size without the strands becoming too wild.

So let me start this by saying I love my Iolite, but only when it works. Lately, it stoped working all together.

I also didn’t want to do this. It was due to terrible customer service from iolite. I was out of my 2-year warranty. They wanted $63 to fix it with no guarantee if it breaks again. You could get a brand new iolite for about $100. So I asked if there was some loyalty discount program where you send the old one in and receive a new one at a discount. Many companies do this if a product is out of warranty. I know canon does it for any camera. They didn’t even responded to that question.

So I asked if they could tell me what may be wrong with it so that I may be able to work on it on my own. Their response “We do not offer advise on how to fix the units as they are factory sealed.” I’m sorry but this is horrible customer service and makes no sense. Most companies will tell you what went wrong with their product. Cars and computers are factory sealed but there are diagrams and information available to help fix issues.

Rant is now over

I’m no engineer but this is what I gathered.

I believe there are two parts to be concerned about. The igniter and the heating element (this part I’m not completely sure about)

There are two screws holding the iolite together underneath one of the stickers. I removed these using a Standard 1/16’ allen wrench. There are a few pieces that lock in but just pry it open. The piece by the ignition could be a bit tough.

1. Is the igniter
2. I think is the heating element.

Get any piezo lighter. [BBQ lighters] work great. And only $.99!

Simply [replace the piece] and the part should work. And that will get you sparking! I had to cut the wire a bit.

It still wasn't working well so I took apart the [chamber.]
KAzOtr7.jpg

[Close up] Does any one know what this is, material wise? I'm pretty sure it's the part that stays warm, but I have no idea what to replace it with. Any help would be appreciated. I doused it in ISO to clean up.

All in all it works much better now. I get a realiable spark everytime. It still takes a few trys to get it to light but it's better than it not working at all.

If anyone knows what to replace the heating element with I'd love to know.

I also found out that it's very very cheap (parts) wise to make one of these. Anyone down for a challenge?

Thanks and I hope this helps.

I've done a fair bit of this, I'm now on my third set of pads (two to a set) and I don't own a Volcano.

If you check carefully you'll discover it's actually a single wire woven into a tube, kind of a cross between an 'Chinese finger trap' and a chain mail condom...... Find one end of the tube, stretch it out (making it smaller in diameter and longer) then cut it across the length. If you make a less than perfect cut, pluck the short parts out. Then simply stuff it into the place you want to fill. I've used very very short lengths to fill DV cans, just keep the cuts square so you have only one piece of wire.

I’m sorry but this is horrible customer service and makes no sense. Most companies will tell you what went wrong with their product. Cars and computers are factory sealed but there are diagrams and information available to help fix issues.

Putting aside judgement of CS (I can take either side of that one....), I don't agree it makes no sense. There are considerable risks to such products that use compressed flammable gas, encouraging owners to mess inside opens them up to serious liabilities. I seriously doubt their Lawyers would allow it?

I also disagree with "Most companies will tell you what went wrong with their product", I suggest it's the very rare company interested in discussing reliability problems with their products, can you please provide some similar products whose makers are free with this information? I also disagree that cars or computers are sealed products, in fact quite the opposite (if you ignore Apple for the moment). Most are made with common fasteners, have factory parts available, and are designed for Depot (rather than Factory) repair. As well as owner upgrades and modifications. Apples and oranges.

While I don't know for sure, I strongly suspect the mystery material from the burner is Platinum plated metal (most likely Aluminum?), the same technology used in Catalytic Converters in cars. Pt is very expensive (more so than Gold)
http://www.kitco.com/market/

Since only the surface is active, a thin plating is sufficient. Eventually the high heat eats up the substrate and the unit fails (much as a Catalytic Converter 'wears out').

I'd be extremely surprised to find out this isn't a tough part to make, very expensive for a few pieces. The reason Catalytic Converters cost so much more than a muffler the same size. BTW it can be effective. The Al beads in the converter are porous and have a surface area larger than a football field.

The 'replace (or just adjust) the sparker' part has been covered here a couple of times in the past, this is, I think, the first time someone has posted about taking the burner apart.

My advice is to accept it's provided long and welcome service and replace it if you've a mind to keep one about or consider another vape as a replacement, this one has bought the farm I think.

Best wishes,

Hello all, I know this is my first post and i have looked but there are SOO MANy PAGES in this thread and i have a simple question: what sort of plastic is used for the lolite?
I will be getting one for me and my grandma ( both medical users, she is not doing so well right now sadly...)and using my friends it got pretty hot (its 3yrs old though) and i worry about toxic chemicals in the plastic because the straw part did get pritty hot..

Thanks guys!

There's not going to be anything toxic but they always get hot. Mine got hot day 1, is there any reason aside from you learning of the Iolite from a friend why that would be your choice?

There's been a lot of changes since the Iolite hit the market.

There's been a lot of changes since the Iolite hit the market.

well i thought it looked pritty portable and simple to use, I have a plug in vaporizer (old school bc vaporizer that can burn herb if you keep it on too long).
Also i need it to be simple to use and fairly safe. my grandma doesnt speak english and just started having cannabis cookies for various issues she has rigth now, only this last few months and has recently got doc to sign papers and is now legal user. she has NEVER been a cannabis user, she is the LAST PERSON i would have ever thought to be using cannabis.. I still feel like im in the twilightzone or something! haha, she uses it for pain ( gout, blood vessle issues, bad arthritis)

I also dont want to look like a pipe or anything, she has always been very anti drug ( reefermadness) , "Jesus doesnt like that " type of thing. so along with working pretty well aside from getting kinda hot i thought it looked nice, like an actual medical device and i liked how the bud tasted sooo good, even the hash i put in it.

What do you mean by big changes? is there other better options you would recommend?

Im looking for:
*Something easy to use
*safe for someone whom might not be too bright with electronics (or anything complicated really)
*something portable
*something that WONT burn bud ( I got a have a vapor pen recently and it burns the bud...)
*Something that looks like a medical device or atleast not too much like a pipe or anything of that sort.
*Something that has ALOT of good review and atleast a little time already on the market to rack up those reviews.

BTW i am also a legal medical user in Canada and have extensive research into cannabis uses, strains history and all that, I am pretty smart in that area, but i AM a bit of a noob to vaporizers since i have been with my bong for soo long i never really looked into it much untill recently and the market has changed DRASTICALLY!

I also work fulltime in marketing and know how the forums and marketing goes and how there are alot of BS logs reviews made as a marketing ploy, so knowing how it "REALLY" is its hard to gauge BS from real when you are new to the subject, but i do know what to look for as some of the basic tactics are the same for many companies. not that that makes them evil, they can still have a good product, but i want real feedback.

Thank you very much for your input!

I'm not sure the Iolite will be the easiest for her to use; it can be a bit finicky with the butane switch and the clicking. Plus filling with butane can be a pain. I personally think that the Solo is easier to use for not much more money and is in almost every way a better device.

BTW i think I am gonna LOVE this forum!
I am on grasscity also under same name as here, i have a canadian medical cannabis log with photos goign that many seem to be loving, would it be bad to post a link in a new threda to it for those interested?
I know usually forums dont like links to other forums, but since this one is unique I am not sure if it would be wanted or frowned upon here.
Im not pushing the forum, its full of many dumb young kids with no respect for the plant, but there are some good areas also so i stick around.

anyway CHEERS!
