Ascent Vaporizer by DaVinci

Exactly. You face the same problem with ammunition reloading, knowing the volume or the case is critical, but near impossible to calculate. The solution there is to express it in grains (the traditional measure of small weights in firearms, 7000 to the pound) of water it will hold. Not that you'd ever allow water in in use of course.

It makes for a very accurate and useful relative measure.

As a suggestion, maybe we agree on table salt? Very uniform, widely available. As long as the bowl isn't sticky it should be very easy to brush it out. Or wash it. Once we had a table of various vapes capacity in this arbitrary volume measurement (even if expressed in grams of salt) you'd know instantly things like 'it's 20% bigger than Solo about 15% less than MFLB' (numbers pulled out of the air for example/comic effect).

Food for thought?

A problem for sure. As a suggestion, next time load and dump say 10 times and weigh the total and divide?

OF

Ha! That's awesome about the ammo reloading. :)

And like the idea about using a standardizable medium, but might I point out that the Ascent bowl (and others) have holes in the bottom...holes that are larger than salt grains.

I myself was planning on using a clay to fill the void, then using liquid displacement to measure VOLUME. Not the WEIGHT that people want, but at least it would be factually correct.

In lieu of that, measuring 10 samples and averaging seems like a good idea.

I do note that sticks clarified that he wasn't saying his stem was <=0.1, but that he didn't measure at all. But talking both THR and SLiM's statements as consistent, I would hope his findings are in-line with them. :)

really too early to tell when only a small handful of people posses them

Yeah, but one of them is our very own Pak.....long time Pax owner I believe, and a fellow who's judgement I trust more than most......

I bet if we ask real nice......

Yeah, I think a relative measure is actually more useful, as you point out it's easy to get a 15 or 20% shift just drying it a bit.

I don't have this guy, but if faced with what I think are the same holes in my Solo stem I'd probably cut out a circle of wax paper to lay in the stem bottom, pour it full of salt from the box it comes in, immediately dump it and weigh what comes out? In extreme cases we could calculate or otherwise measure the bowl and then express it in grams of salt so we could marry the information into the data base?

Fun idea, IMO, and potentially very useful?

If you do not pack the bowl entirely does it not work well or somthing?

I don't know in this case, but generally it's vape and technique specific. Sometimes it means a lot, other times less, but it's usually a factor at some level.

Wax paper idea: APPROVED
;)

Now we just need one of our reviewers that has wax paper, table salt, and scale more sensitive than one place past decimal...

i really like this idea about salt or h2o. but im sure da vinci has all the specs...why not just ask them for the volume of their bowl?

they could give it in cm^3 or something...? im pretty damn sure they must have measured this and have that info readily available.

btw, instead of wax paper, you may be able to use saran wrap to fully protect the shape of the bowl. and this is just for general ideas, right? scales that are precise up to .01 are pretty expensive from what i know and that level of preciseness really wont make a difference to most users.

So is the ascent going to be the pax killer everyone is talking about.

I think it will be another vaporizer that will live in peace with my Pax ;)

If you must choose between the two, it depends what you are looking for in a vaporizer. Your best bet is to keep watching members descriptions of the Ascent (sounds like we might be able to order soon, so there will be a lot more actual use feedback on here soon after that), and use the inevitable comparisons to decide which one will better fit your needs or wants.

I'm expecting to love both, and to have a preference that depends on my mood/the scenario.

Wondering do they make electric pipes that combust without a lighter? Sorry it's off topic but I am tired of googling with no results ima. Super slow data connection

Well I want portability and stealth ... Pax is a conduction while the ascent is convection right?
But there is no difference in the "high" is there?

I do like that you can use oils with the as ascent but I never tried oils just hash and bud

To make it useful we need to build that data base. We can all play at this, spilling salt all over the kitchen and all. I wonder how to pull it off? Open a thread in the General Forum?

Excellent point! In the true spirit of science we can even duplicate their values.....very cool.

Thanks for the suggestion, it's a good 'un.

Sure, but not usually on purpose. What's the reasoning behind the strange request?

Not a popular topic around here, really, did you notice the Forum name? A bit like asking a Mormon for advice on Bourbon isn't it?

Been done. Many times since Feb. No answer.

So we find ways to answer on our own...

Great idea.

I know dreamerr originally made the suggestion about comparing loads, and she has a few devices to compare.
In my case, I don't, so I can't really contribute, but....

The ascent is a conduction and radiation type vape with convectionion being secondary.
I would say it has a 3 edgedo sword, conduction then radiation then convection.
Which to me sounds like a real winner.
I believe that the possibilities are many in the way this vape can be utilized, technique, load size, draw speed, heat settings all play a part In the vapor of this vape.
I can't wait to try it.

ahh i see - then its the only way.

just thinking this to myself: "but why would da vinci want us to experimentally find out & publish these values to other potential customers on their behalf...what if we misinform others about their product? that will only hurt them"

Is there a standard size for thimbles or something small that we can know the start volume of? We can then pack the thimble full and see how many thimbles the bowl will hold.

Seems it should get us in the ballpark.

Well i think lighters can be very harsh and pipes are very harsh as well and get dirty quick!

Plus I want stealth and if I'm hiking or doing an activity I don't want to stop to. Find my lighter and so on...
Plus I figuired it would be more conservative since on a pipe alot of the weed leaks out and with a penpipe the smoke would stay trapped inside thus having more per hit no?

Plus it's cool to :p

On this forum, we have vapes for stealth use. We do not use combustion pieces. Try looking at all of our portable options.

I read that the atmos combusts but does it fully combust.

I would like to have one for smoking and one for vaping best of both worlds : D

Yea the pax is very sleek looking and easy to use , I shall await reviews for the ascent looks very promising and also very sexy

Yea I did read the name LOL I saw a atmos thread and posted a q but no luck yet so I figured eh what the hell ill ask I'm sure they know even if they don't smoke :D

Hey sticks I've been using my solo, and pax the last couple days.
I find the pax produces nice big vapor but thins out very fast, and the taste disappears fast.
But your right size and functionality is great, I find it burns everything, pinnacle never burns and I hope its the same with the Ascent.

OK disagree with me, I can't force you to be right
OK, I must be missing something here. If we want to know the volume of the bowl (cylinder) isn't there a standard formula: Volume=(pi)(radius squared)(height)?
Measure Ascent bowl and Solo stem bowl (or whatever). Compare.
Of course doesn't account for factors like grind, dryness, etc.

Got the Solo, so if someone wants to send me an Ascent I'll do the measurements!

Oh, I don't know about that.....I think we just found a Librarian to make the list for us? Let's vote on it, that's the Democratic way, right? You could of course volunteer and save us the election.... You're to blame here too you know, can't put it all on Dreamer.....

Thanks. I think it has merit, worth thinking about it a bit fer sure.

You know, that was my 'take' when I saw the photos. I think the Pax is about as tall, a bit narrower but a fair bit thinner? This guy's pretty thick it seems to me more than anything else inconvenience wise? It's a thick brick like thing in the pocket? Not a fatal flaw to all, but to many a big deal.

(pi)(radius squared)

No, no, no! It's not 'pi r square'. Pie are round.....cornbread are square.

You've no idea how long I've been waiting for that straight line...... I owe you.

Good point, though, and we've done some volume calculations before, even cone and other shaped bowls (T1 comes to mind) but I think the idea here is to give a relative volume chart (put the bowls in order size wise) by removing the variables of herb weight. A guy could easily scale it for his use by multiplying the weight of any bowl he knew with his favorite load (in grams of bud, ground ready to go as he likes) by the grams of salt number (ignoring units which don't matter) then dividing that number by the grams of salt number for his reference vape. Easier to do than to describe. There are even clever guys out there that write simple scripts to do the conversions, much like the currency converters on the web. You could select your reference vape, enter the load you like to use (in grams) select the target vape and have it tell you how much the same load in the new vape would weigh (packed the same way with his bud).

Could be pretty cool.....

For Cylinders with a fixed r, then yes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_(geometry)#Other_types_of_cylinders

Plus I don't believe the base is a plane.
[EDIT: Looking at THR's photos, it *seems* that A) walls are parallel, and B) bottom might be perfectly perpendicular to walls.
img2458hc.jpg

If that is the case, then we can use the formula (a*b*H*∏), but A) not all vapes lend themselves to this (irregular shapes), and B) where's the fun in that, when we can just develop a new standard? :p ]

Oh, I don't know about that.....I think we just found a Librarian to make the list for us?

I FREAKIN' LOVE data. Done.

Easiest thing to do is to put the info on the wiki-page for each device. IF ONLY I knew someone who was a wiki editor. ;)

I own two Pax but no Ascent. (I've decided the plural of Pax is Pax.) I got to try an Ascent, it was lovely.

They both use 18650 batteries so they're really about the same thickness. Going by memory, it seems to me that if one of them is thicker it'd be the Pax. I'm looking at one of mine and it's not that skinny.

Super! That was easier than I thought....anyone wanna buy some thumbscrews? Never used.....

I guess I disagree a bit with the second part, I'm not sure all the vapes have pages and it's only really useful to compare to one of the others.....perhaps a Wiki page on 'vape load volumes, complete with the calculator explained if we can't get someone to program one for us, that you could point to?

Better and better. I'm game for collecting data on the vapes I have.....and I have a few to measure.....

Keep kicking it around, guys.
:mmmm: Whut?

In a more civilized world, they would send you one so you wouldn't have to fondly remember and guess?

Thanks for the size take, so Pax is basically just a bit narrower then? Someone should make vapes that use the flat batteries from cell phones..... Something smaller than a wallet, more like a key case? Or one that just looks like a cell phone? Who questions guys going down the street with one of those anchors stuck to their face?

Edit, you could even build a bitty carbon filter in to scrub your exhaust for indoor use...... It only has to work for a session or two between services....

Busted...I have to confess I figured you couldn't resist my friend.

One of the advantages of being simple minded, your friends don't waste too much effort trying to guess what you'll do.......
