Hi Max:

Thanks for your reply. I will check my paperwork and see when I purchased the Iolite. Would be nice to get it back in rotation. Though, I have to admit, if I had known about the Magic Flight, or it was available at the time, I would've purchased the Magic Flight instead. But I have had a lot of positive experiences from the Iolite, as well. Just a more complex unit. Vaporizing has been a learning curve...I have several other vapes in the "vaporizer graveyard." And a lighter wallet...
Cheers!

shortwind,
Thanks for the feedback. I have another question.

I was thinking about using my iolite inside a cup covered with a straw for the outside. I want to know, does the vapor get hot enough that a standard fast food straw would melt from the vapor, and that it wouldn't be safe to use the iolite with plastic straws? Would harder plastic straws from hard novelty cups work better, or does anyone have any good suggestions about using the iolite with secrecy in public? Let me know and thanks.

Thin plastic straws would probably melt or fume, I wouldn't do it. Just use the iolite confidently like you're doing nothing wrong, and no-one will bat an eyelid. I've walked through traffic lights being attended by Police while toking on the iolite, it just isn't a problem if you are confident and don't look guilty of breaking the law. Most people will explain it away as a curiosity, but if you try to hide it or look ashamed after meeting someone'e gaze then you'll draw more attention than if you just ignore everyone around you and go for it.

Ive had the same experience, I walk around in downtown toronto puffing on the thing, passing hundreds of people, and I have never seen someone look at me twice. Just hold it in the nice carrying case it comes with, people will think its some sort of tobacco smoking device, or an electric cigarette.

Edit: forgot about the rest of the post, If you really wanted to be incognito, then I think the cup idea would be fine, just attach one of the stronger straws onto half sized tube the iolite comes with. This solves inhaling the vapour but what do you do to exhale? If your really worried i would think about that more.

Use the tubing. If you don't have any, go get some. I always hit my iolite with the tubing attached to the mouthpiece anyways but with the cup trick I just used it as the "straw" and stuck it through the lid. If you plan on using it somewhere crowded or indoors, be careful. It will still smell and from my experience doing the cup trick, the cup seems to accumulate a lot of that smell so if you open the lid you get a nice blast of burn popcorn smell.

is this the tubing you are talking about?

Okay so here the scoop. My Iolite officially died. I must of gone through almost half a can of vector trying to purge and refill hoping that would fix my clog issue. I contacted the ebay seller because he had it listed with a 2 year warranty which I later found was bs. He never responded to me after a month of emails. Ebay couldn't do anything about the seller because the unit was bought more than 45 days ago and I got the same run around with paypal. I had no other options at this point so I went and bought the right screw driver (1/16 x1 3/4 precision) to remove the cover and dig deep. I found that not only was my system clogged but the hose that runs butane to the combustion chamber had the smallest leak. I've since decided to abandon the fix, move on and invest in a new iolite.

If you get anything from my mistake its that you should look into the manufacture warranty and make sure you're covered should something happen. Also be sure to use the best recommend butane's. If you don't have access to them, order online.

I'll be buying another one this time from one of the sponsors. They have great accessory bundles and are authorized dealers. My only question now is what color? :ninja:

I haven't read this whole thread, but i'm pretty upset as i sold my iolite last year, but now I want one again, and after the plastic mouthpiece broke, i bought a stainless steel one off ebay, all steel, no plastic, it even had a threaded grip, oh how I wish I could get that back as now i can't find any anywhere online, and it seems as if a lot of you on here have had mouthpiece problems.

I just got an Iolite-like device which acts just like my IO except it runs on rechargeable batteries.
Same setup---right down to the tools and screen.
It is called the zico I-torch--$130 from an Amazon shop.

It looks like an IO on steroids--bigger, fatter and heavier.
So when my IO gets tempermental--like clicking 10 times with no blue light--I hit my launch box or my I-torch.

bruce48,
Hello, first I off, I am very new to vaping. I am going to make this short & sweet for now, as I am needing to get ready for Disturbed & Korn tonight, whee-ha! I have some very nice, dried White Siberian in it at the moment. I took it apart to see how dirty the mouthpieces are, and to take out the water condenser. (My Afgooey was pretty sticky when my baby sis bought me my Iolite on Sunday.) Good thing for this forum, as I can see there is a bit of a learning curve- especially when I've only used the Vaporgenie one ther time.
Some quick notes on what I think- So far I love it, though I'm not sure if I am using it to max capability. Self, remember warranty on this baby! I'm getting the idea that vaping technique is a bit different then smoking, which is part of the learning curve. Directions in manual suck, for a complete novice. Either I am putting the water condenser in the wrong part(ss screw mouthpiece), or my small end of the tool is not small enough. same thing with venting the butane fill...small end of tool to big. Paper clip works for the water condenser, btw. What I don't like is that I can't seem to just take a couple of hits in a hurry. Seems like it really gets going in about 10 minutes. I haven't busted out a scale yet, so I can't really tell if I am using more or less. Even if you don't see vapor coming back out...I'm thinking you are still getting a hit? Or not? It seems a bit hard to tell if your bowl is spent, if you can't see vapor? I can see the brown weed, if it is brown- is it spent, or is there varying shades of brown? The vote does not appear to be in on whether the heat burns it out if you turn it off and leave it. I suppose that more depends on how full the bowl was, and how long it was hot before turned off. I do know that it is perfect for lying in bed when I do my heaviest smoking probably. But, I still have the tendancy to reach for my pipe afterwards sometimes. From what I have read, sounds like I am getting the hang of it, and maybe I am not that far off from max capacity. If I truly do want smoke completely out of my lungs- I see 2 things. 1- need several more vapes, 1 for every situation, and 2- I need a stronger vape! Now off to Disturbed, which I will pack a couple of j or a pipe. I don't think my Iolite needs to go out partying. I just got it, and can see just losing it because it got broke at a concert! Need a Vaporgenie perhaps?

Some forum members have had some reservations about the Zico Itorch, thinking it's a knockoff-quality adaptation I think, and that the flashlight attachment is just a gimmick to get it through customs.

Please find or create a thread on the Vaporizer Discussion board about it, giving us an indepth review!

I for one have had some mild problems with my iolite, and honesty do not think it performs all too spectacularly for the high initial retail and the ongoing cost of fuel. The always-on conduction aspect really turns me off. Also, it has the aesthetic and tactile build quality of a cheap alarm clock, preposterous for the cost of the unit. The stem threads have melted/chipped away to nothing, I know this is not the case in newer models.

Do the O&B people officially say it's okay to inhale during the ongoing heat up phases, when the unit hisses to bring it back up to temperature? Are we told that the gas is being vented away from the air intake, or that the vented gas is harmless as may be their story, or are we supposed to just not inhale while heating?

I couldn't agree more. I don't think it perfoms good enough for the high retail price and continued cost of butane. It looks nice because of the bright colors, but it's really a cheap piece of plastic in my opinion. I really don't like how you can't control the vaping temp of this unit.

That's the problem with buying from sellers on eBay or Amazon...the warranty typically doesn't cover those units because it's usually being sold under the MAP (Minimum Advertised Price). Although you get a great price on a unit, if anything ever goes wrong, your basically screwed.

This is an update. If you recall from my posts above, my iolite had died. I did call the U.S. 800 number and found out, like one of the above posters, that I had no warranty protection because I purchased it from a private party on e-bay. Since I am not mechanically adept, I will make no attempt at taking it apart. Maybe hold on to it for someone who can resurrect it (if possible).
Fortunately, I have a very very very nice Magic Flight Launch Box which satisfies my particular needs and for which I had a quite easy learning curve.
Thanks!

shortwind,
Just curious. I got my iolite awhile ago and just finished my first batch of smoke. Seems like I'm going through a lot more than with a combustible method. Typically for combustion, I'll do small pinches, single hits. I haven't found an effective way to do anything similar with the iolite. less than a full bowl seems to be even more wasteful than filling it up. A quantity that I could spread out over a couple of sessions, with combustion, now barely lasts for a single session and to less effect. I'm kind of disappointed in the lack of efficiency. Is there something I'm missing, some technique I should know about ? I love the fact that there's so little odor - I can easily smoke in the car or in public and not be detected, which is a huge plus over combustion, not to mention the health benefits. But I really hate the fact that I'm going through much more product to less effect. Any tips would be welcome. (One bonus is that I save all of the dumpings and after they've accumulated, eat a couple of tablespoons, and do get a decent buzz.)

The iolite is constantly running once you ignite it so your herb is always being roasted in there. It's not very good for taking single rips, unfortunately.

I too was a pinch hitter, using the dugout. I also tried the Iolite as my first good portable vape and found myself going through a lot of herbs. I finally got a Magic Flight Launch Box, and it was more what I was looking for. You can literally have it be a 1 hitter with using just a minuscule amount.

Seems like you're experiencing the typical adjustment, going from smoke to vapor. 1st, you have to understand that the lesser effect you're getting with vapor is due, in large part, to the absence of smoke byproducts that have nothing to do with mj, and everything to do with smoke. These toxins mostly produce drowsiness and one gives you a lightheaded effect, similar to huffing various industrial products. Vapor is a much cleaner high, and with a variable temp vaporizer, you can tailor the effects to some extent by adjusting the temp.

The iolite is fixed temp, probably another reason you're not happy with it, since it can't reach the higher temp range, which provides effects closer to the smoke high. I would suggest picking up a Magic Flight box. It's inexpensive, very portable, has the best warranty you'll ever find, and will allow you to go high temp. The best way to convert to vapor from smoke is do nothing but vaporize for a time, so you get used to it. The LB will get you closer to the smoke high, and allow you to make a better decision about vapor.

You also need to recognize that vapor is a lot less detectable than smoke, both going in and coming out. You won't feel an iolite hit nearly as much as a smoke hit, nor will you see as much vapor on exhale as you do smoke. Vapor exhales, especially those on the tail end of a bowl, are best viewed in direct lighting. And vapor is so much milder than smoke that small vapor hits (especially with a fixed temp model like the iolite) may not even register in your throat and lungs. But if you sit back and wait, the effect will be there.

If you get used to vapor and decide you like it, I think you'll find that you'll use less than with smoking. Some people go through more with a vape just because they enjoy it more than smoking, but the vast majority of converted vaporists find that vaping stretches their supply and saves $ vs. smoking.

Hey guys just ran into some hash and I am wondering if its ok to load this stuff up in the Iolite or if it will create a mess once its heated.

Anyone ever tried vaping some hash in the Iolite?

I have though I layered it with herb on the screen and made a hash sandwich ;) Worked fine for me. I always reclaim goodies from my Iolite w/ Everclear so I figured if it didn't vaporize completely it wouldn't be wasted.

Oh ok this is a good idea didn't think of putting it in between it seems like this would help contain any mess somewhat.

I hope having the newer version with no bottom screen won't make a difference...
