After about a year a friend is having problems with his iolite. It seems as if when he lights it the blue flame light stays on and the gas never shuts off for a long time.

Then other times it seems to work properly. Anyone have an idea what is wrong and if it is something we can solve ourselves.

Thanks

I've vaped a lot of shishas and tobaccos in the IO, but opened cigarettes would be gross. (too dry and chem tasting)

be very careful with vaping tobac anyway. I learned early on that nicotine poisoning isn't fun. its too easy to pull a hit as strong as a whole cig in one drag, without the other toxins to stop you.

Cigarettes are engineered with rapid addiction in mind. They add things like ammonia, that during combustion, converts the nicotine into it's free-base form. Mmmm. Hooked from day one ! But, during vaporization this ammonia and other added chemicals are not combusted, but delivered to you in their normal (non combusted) configuration and are quite nasty.

As Ciarn@O&B says, use pipe tobaccos (and other tobaccos) which are not engineered after harvest. Since pipe users generally do not inhale they don't add all those extra ingredients the cigarette mfg.s so generously provide.

And please seek help (if you need it) to quit using tobacco completely. :2c: You know the reasons.

edit: this response was given in another thread and merged along with several others into the Iolite thread.

Many thanks for the replies! Tbh t was just a quick thing to do for my gf to try and wean her off the fags. I really don't smoke tobacco at all. My main use will be chamomile and er..something else lol :D

Just tried some chamomile. Very burnt taste to it, not pleasant at all. I do feel a little relaxed from it though (without moisture condesor in)

Tom, afaik ammonia naturally occurs in tobacco. The curing process (at least for cigar tobacco) removes as much ammonia as possible. There are other things added to cigarettes such as flavorings such as menthol and chemicals to ensure an even burn such as saltpeter. English and Canadian cigarettes by law are are pure tobacco without any chemical additives (except for the likes of Dunhill menthol). Pipe tobaccos are commonly flavored. Aromatic varieties should be avoided. English style pipe tobaccos would be the most adulterant free but they are among strongest tasting. When burnt they taste great but smell horrible (unless you happen to be the one indulging).

Boy am I pissed I bought an Iolite in December and after about 2- 3 months the damn stem broke off above the thread. No way to get it out so I had to buy the whole top and it cost me $35. I figured it was a fluke thing and maybe my own fault because I was buttered so I forked over the loot. Now here we are just a few months later and the same thing happens. Now I register here and see that a lotta folks are having the same problem. I called my guy at the store and he said he can get me a replacement in a couple of weeks. When I paid $35 it was there in a coupla days. In the mean time I dont have my portable. Can only use my plug in unit. I hope the next design is not so problematic and looks more like a cell phone to really throw folks off. Well since I have some hash I guess i'll have to start smoking again. I'm pissed.

Hi Old Marine,

Is there any specific time that it fails to start properly. For example after filling with gas, turning it back on after just using it, turning it on after long period of non use? etc.
Also what brand of butane gas are you using? Are you in an extreamly hot or cold region?

Regards
Ciarn
Thanks for the reply.

It happens pretty much any time he goes to use it from a cold/fresh start. Semi tropical is the region. Right now we are in the 90's F and it gets extremely hot here.
Butane is Ronson which is all we have available locally . I have been using the same brand in my iolite longer than he has had his unit. Which is about 1.5 years. I think...

Does that help?

Firstly you regions temperature should be fine so I do not think that should be an issue.

Secondly and more importantly, Ronson is bad for the iolite and will cause starting problems. Is it possible for you to get Vector Butane or Newport butane?
Vector have a dealer locator on their website http://www.vectorkgm.com/ or you could contact them through info@vectorkgm.com

Newport contact info is at http://www.keen-newport.com/

I am pretty sure that if you can switch the either of these brands of butane it will resolve your starting.
I will certainly pass on your recommendation and report back if it solves the problem.

Thank you for your time.

Also on a side note. If I lost my iolite tomorrow, I would be on the phone right away too have one sent next day.
I haven't found a more enjoyable portable for traveling. I really like my iolite.

If the unit is hot, you should be able to get the stem out still or did it break off completely flush so that there is nothing to grip on to? Also, do you remove the whole stem/mouthpiece every time you're done hitting it and pack it up?

Chucku, I should have gotten the reference, but this was a post in what I thought was a short lived thread. Like I say above my response got moved here. Since plenty will read it (here) and think I was talking out my hat, I need to reply. So, apologies to Iolite for this somewhat off topic tobacco related post.

http://www.cnn.com/US/9802/04/minnesota.tobacco/

"Pointing to internal company documents, Channing Robertson, testifying on behalf of the state Wednesday, said that in 1965, scientists at R.J. Reynolds, trying to find out why their Winston brand was losing ground to Philip Morris' Marlboro brand, discovered that Marlboro contained ammonia compounds.
Robertson, a Stanford University professor of chemical engineering, said ammonia increases the nicotine potency of cigarettes by increasing the amount of nicotine contained in the vapor smokers inhale.

In the 1970s, Reynolds started adding ammonia and "slowly but surely, everyone fell in line," he said.

By 1989, documents showed that tobacco companies were using more than 10 million pounds of ammonia compounds each year, Robertson said."

I think I googled 'ammonia added to tobacco' and a few listings down this confirmed what I had heard.

And yes, I imagine ammonia is a by product of the curing, but this is added ammonia, basically fertilizer grade ammonia added as a nicotine booster. Nice guys.

Thank you Ciaran I hope the new ones are more durable and I will let you know.

greystr0ke it is impossible to get the stem out because there is nothing for me to bite on to turn it. It broke off flush. I usually take the whole stem off after im done vaping, but sometimes I just take off the top 2 sections. What do you suggest?

Samsquanch dont hate me. I should have contacted the company after the first one broke. I bought a 2nd stem and filling chamber and paid $35 for it.

Thai, if you heat the Iolite up you can use one side of a pair of scissors or the likes to unscrew the stuck bit. It can be gotten out without too much trouble.

The end of some keys works also to get it out after the unit has heated up. It is easy to repair.
Don't throw the bowl away, it can be salvaged.

Just done a test.

Lavender:- I left the unit for 3 minutes after heating up. Very nice smoke, very relaxing!
Chamomile:- Gets you very lightly stoned (which was unexpected!) and has a slight euphoric effect. I would advise vaping this very shortly after the unit heats up as otherwise it doesn't taste very nice!

The only thing I'm concerned about is that when vaping 'something else' I felt as though there was a fluid build up (i still coughed a little bit). I'm only worried that usng a vaporiser might cause a respiratory ailment (infected by the vapours? Is Legionairs possible if the unit isn't cleaned?)

Just to note though that I phoned the company that make these in Ireland, and they are certainly very friendly to talk to if you need any help.

I feel like it would be really great if Oglesby & Butler would post on their Iolite web site that the Iolites now have UPDATED materials for the mouthpiece/straw that resists cracking/breaking.

I also think it would be really SUPER DUPER great if O&B posted on their Iolite web site that there was a mouthpiece exchange program, and if you send in your old and/or broken mouthpieces, they will be replaced with the new mouthpieces free of charge.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ that would be awesome Derf

Let me expand (finally got a new keyboard) I own both the iolite and the Extreme Q . Both of which I have broken a pieces , the iolite is the shaft , with the Q I've broke a cyclone bowl and an elbow from drops . I have seen both these units for sale at various retail shops , but here is the kicker , any place that is selling an Extreme , has spare parts in stock on site , not one place have I gone to that sells iolite has any spare parts , and when I inquire about parts , they say "they will order them" and "of course we can get parts" , but , they can never get anything . I would figure if you can order and sell iolites then what would be the problem to get parts for them . I have been on a quest since December to get an equivalent stem set up for my unit , Ive had to make my own . A newb (no offence ThaiStick ) joins the forum , make a first post bitching about his stem breaking and just get stuff sent to him , when the rest of us (check back the 1oo+ pages to this thread ) had to work to get this thing to function as its supposed to . I really don't get why it's like pulling teeth to get parts something that is so readily available in the retail market . The Extreme Q is the first thing I've ever purchased online , other than that , all my vaping purchases have been face to face , that's how I like it , sorry for all the EQ references I know this is an iolite thread and sorry if this sounds old skool but thats just me. I still love my iolite but there need to be a solution to this stem issue :2c: :peace:

Samsquatch did you contact the company? Cairan seemed cool and maybe will replace yours as well. If things are gonna be better lets be cool with it. Chill out and vap some good shit. I'm the one who should be pissed, I actually had to SMOKE the last couple of days. man I forgot how bad the shit tastes when it burns.

Marine I kept both my bowls Figured they would be good for parts. I'll try heating it up again and use some keys. I like Derfs idea, but that might not happen, however Cairan is reaching out to folks so lets see how that works out.

hi guys, so far i have had no bigger problems with my iolite and was pretty happy with it.
but for a short time i have the following problem: i start it and the first heating ciecle begins and ends. everything normal so far. but now after the hissing of the gas flow starts, it won't re-ignite. i have to ignite it manually and it works until the same problem appears again. has anyone had the same issues? :/

edit: i have already vented the unit and am using the same fuel as before when it used to work very well.

Hello all,

Although I realize this is my first post and whatnot, I can not tell you all how relieving it was to really find the information I was looking for. (Updated searching parameters would be more helpful but I won't complain). Anyhow, I've had my iolite for 4-5 months now and really the only issue I have had with it is filling up the butane. I guess I didn't really know what I was doing with the Butane. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iolite. One of the main things I loved about it was how inconspicuous it looks. You can take it anywhere and at most people think it is a walkie talkie. Heh heh heh.

In any case it is nice to meet you all.
