Haha alright then, I prefer to keep my stalkers friendly so lets do this.

I've made some subtle changes to the core which going forward will allow the use of a couple new types of stems, neither of which use silicone.

The first is a stainless steel tipped nylon stem similar to the ubiquitous Zap stems that so many people know and love. These stems use a 5/16" tip that fits inside the UD core inner-tube, the core has been modified to provide a physical positive stop so the stem can only insert so far and can sit there hands free if needed. They will also work in the last Zap models (CRZs?) as well but I don't think they'll work in older Zaps or Purple Days pieces though as I think those used 1/4" tipped stems.

These will not work in previous UD models which from now on I will refer to as "classic core" models.

The second stem is a 14mm GonG stem with a replaceable stainless steel screen which unlike our discontinued WPB stems doesn't use silicone. Instead these stems fit loosely over the core inner-tube and use the top of the core as a positive stop to limit insertion and to allow hands free use with an UD inverted on top of a glass piece (see picture). This allows for easy one handed removal of the the UD and stirring as well. These will work on all UDs aside from the very old, extinct, 1/4" cored Twigs out there.

So those are your new stem options, they'll be available immediately with the current refresh and will be offered as options to kit out your UD with and as stand-alone items as well. :peace:

::edited to add:: - The refresh is now up and live. Everything on there not labeled (classic core) is compatible with the nylon stems. Again the GonG stems are compatible with all Dogs.

Alright, like Underdog said, the refresh is up. Please let me know if you notice any website glitches or anything that might need to be fixed - we've had quite a few changes for this refresh. Thanks!

A Banksia Pod Twig.

Interesting!

Thanks! It's the one that was lurking in a picture I posted of the wood rack from like, er, 'forever' ago lol.. finally got around to finishing it. :p

Can you reclaim off the nylon stems? not that Im burning now anyway, just curious. .

Hmm I'm not much of a reclaim expert so I'm not too sure, all I've ever really done with this type of stem is wash them in ISO. Maybe someone more experienced in Zap style stems can chime in with more info.

Ok, got busy putting the refresh up and missed dinner so gonna go grab some now.. be back later. :peace:

I think I set a land speed record for ordering after the refresh went up. I love my first UD log so much that I've wanted a second since I bought it (mostly so I don't have to drag mine around everywhere). A Twig seemed like an ideal solution, so I picked up the Rustic California Pistachio Twig. I can't wait for my new Pup to arrive! (Beautiful refresh...my non-medicating partner helped me decide, but it wasn't easy!)

Hey,

Wanted to stop in and let everyone know I have been getting some great use out of my dog lately. I always forget how efficient it is, and then I am blown away :p.

The new refresh looks great! It had me looking at the site and I noticed some dogs come with a variable voltage power supply. But I don't see them anywhere else on the site. Are you able to sell those separate?

Also curious if the new core/stem design offers any advantages over the classic core. It appears many of the twigs come pretty small now, which is cool to see.

Someones always watching..
I haven't really figured out how to address all the difference aspects of this whole VVPS thing yet but the VVPSs are costing me $20/ea (incl the cable) so a break-even point for me (incl Priority shipping) would be like $25.

i asked the same question when vvps was announced. I think that price is only for existing dog owners. Hope it helps..

Looking really good. Like the new stuff!

Can we send in an old model for an upgrade to the new core? I would love to make the space modulator the new core.

Also curious about this, or maybe a deal on interested repeat business ;).

Edit: Digging that new little kettle piece by the way. Should shoot a promo 'dog-fog' video.

Cool stuff, Dave.

It seems like the zapdog has finally come to life. Or was it the Underzap?

I miss those nylon stems and have always preferred them to the silicone, so I'm happy to see this new direction. Exciting stuff to be sure.

Hey Meghan, yours was the other one I was considering too! But my nut allergy self couldn't bring myself to get the pistachio wood!(and if my UD smells like oak, that's another plus in my books) I may try to get a review or comparison of the UD to other vapes I've used up after I receive it, and I'll be sure to let you all know how the nylon stem performs. Also when I go back to school in Sept look out for some GonG vids with my sov kingstem!

From research it seems that the walnut oil finish is much different than a regular walnut oil, namely that it has the proteins (which cause reactions) removed due to the hotpress process of making the finish, so it should be fine. I also don't have the most extreme sensitivity to them (being around them is fine, traces in foods are fine, just directly eating something containing nuts as an ingredient causes a reaction). Thanks a ton for your care on this though

That's good, I'll go ahead and get it boxed up and shipped out then. Just to be on the safe side you might consider plugging it in and letting it run for a few hours near a window or something in case any lingering oil wants to evaporate off. Also, don't eat it. :p

Ahh thanks for pointing that out.

Let it be known if they showed up under accessories at an increased price id more than likely have to order one :p

I have 0 reasons to abandon my classic dog, but all these new changes sure make it tempting :p Good work Dave.

Alright guys and gals I'm back, out of order on responding to posts but back.

Thanks for the flurry of orders last night, always a fun way to start a Monday. Speaking of orders all from yesterday, last night and this morning are boxed and shipped. All messages responded to as far as I know but if not just send me a quick reminder.

@ Meghan - nice choice with the Pistachio, it's some wildly beautiful wood and unique too. It and the other ones with California in the name is actually wood that I cut myself, then milled and dried before using so I always feel a special connection to those ones. A real labor of love so glad you chose it.. :)

Also curious if the new core/stem design offers any advantages over the classic core. It appears many of the twigs come pretty small now, which is cool to see.

I've been trying to come up with a good way of selling the VVPS on the site as standalone items but haven't been able to make the numbers work so I probably won't be adding them. Reason being is that for all practical purposes a person can buy one from eBay or Amazon for like 1/2 the price I would have to charge just to break even so it don't make sense to bother really.

The new core revision has a few tweaks that are advantageous I just didn't really mention them since they're not super-duper-incredibly amazing or anything but I'll share since you ask. Reduced a little mass so shaved a minute or two off heat up times. Added a bit more insulation so hopefully that will add to the protection of the wood, this also allows slightly skinnier Twigs while keeping them holdable and not to hot to the touch.

...Can we send in an old model for an upgrade to the new core?...

Not really, unfortunately. In most cases it would be impossible to do this retrofit without damaging or destroying Dog in question.

@ thg - thanks, yeah this little kettle piece is nice.. I picked it up from an UD here on the forum. I stuck a whip in the mouthpiece and my Dog with 14mm GonG stem on top and had a nice hands-free setup the other night. :ko:

@ Stu - haha I don't recall, I think it was ZapDog. I think lots of people will like the new stems, I prefer both over the silicone now myself. The nylon ones are really nice for people looking to maximize efficiency, especially for small load/hit situations.

@ Tennstrong - that's another one of the woods I cut and processed myself this past year.. nice.

@ AA - thanks AA, glad you like the new pieces and the changes. Even though they're not major changes I think they're all nice and make for an even better experience.

Thought I had something else to say but now I can't think of it.. something wrong with my short-term memory I guess. Alright heading out to get some shop work done now, already working on pieces for the next refresh. :brow:

Hey Dave,

I'm curious.. with the older stem designs, would you normally stir your loads before finishing?

My old nylon rockzap stem seemed to work around not-stirring the entire time. Have you experienced anything similar or dissimilar to that?

Attention UDs: The phone company is replacing a bunch of equipment near our place, so we will not have internet access starting sometime late tonight and going until tomorrow evening. So there will be a 24 hour delay on any messages, emails or orders placed during this time. If you need to get a hold of us or need an order shipped out tomorrow - I'd try to get that in as early this evening as possible.

Thanks!

@ SD - good question, I've become a habitual stirrer somewhere along the line and now stir pretty much everything regardless of whether it needs it. On top of that I haven't given much thought to whether one type of stem needs more or less stirring than another type so I can't really say.

Maybe someone who picked up one of the new pieces can let us know once they have a chance to try out the new stem types.. pretty sure at least 1 or 2 Dogs sold yesterday to people who already have a (classic core) Dog with the classic stems.

Oh yeah, I remembered what I was going to say earlier and forgot lol.

> This refresh was a bit smaller than some past ones and is probably going the new norm for the near future as I've so busy with custom jobs lately that I don't have as much time to work on refresh pieces. Lots of custom Pups whose owners don't want their pictures shared going to LA (specifically Santa Monica, Malibu and Hollywood) lately so maybe we're starting to get celebrity UDs.

> Oh, on custom pieces I've also been offering an upgrade ($20) to a cartridge heater heating element vs the standard resistor which should make for a more robust element, increased heater lifespan and less heater degradation. The cartridges are ones that I'm having custom made for UD (in the USA even!) and work in both the classic and newly revised cores. They're stainless steel for those who don't care for the porosity and potential fragility of ceramic ones. Also since they're low-voltage DC cartridges they're compatible with standard and VV power supplies while avoiding any liabilities of line-voltage AC cartridges and devices. These might, in the future, make it into standard production UDs but for now are limited to custom orders. :science: :peace:
