Concentrate shelf-life?

There are a few discussions covering this along with storage, but I hoped to get a number of concentrate veterans to chime in on shelf-life specifically. I've had flowers in black, air tight, glass jars that are still knock out, maybe more so, after months, even a year.
Would the shelf life of concentrates kept in similar dark, glass, airtight containers within a freezer be comparable to flowers?
What about Pure Gold in it's glass tube, within a box, in a refrigerator?
TIA

I'm also curious about this, specifically bubble hash storage. I've always stored my buds and kief vacuumed sealed, stored in the vegetable drawer of the fridge. Is that method acceptable for bubble hash as well?

I have stored bubble in airtight jars in the freezer for over a year with no perceivable change in quality. I leave the jars in the freezer and grab a small chunk of hash while the jar is still inside to avoid moisture condensation from removing it. I assume other concentrates would work in a similar way.

Im wondering if anyone else can chime in regarding shelf life and storage as well, does wax degrade over time? if so, where does the THC go, and what are the negative effects of trying to use it?

I don't see why (if you eliminate air, light and heat) a concentrate would degrade quicker than flowers. But leave flowers and a concentrate in the sun and Id bet the flowers would keep their potency longer.

Basically if you store it right there shkuld be little potency loss.

Jonny, I believe thc degrades to cbn or cbd? One of them anyway lol. So it doesnt disappear just the compound alters. No negative effect just a different high

I def appreciate the input. How about storing it in freezer/ fridge vs. dark dry room temp?

I'd love to hear a more definitive and scientific answer to this question as well. Also, is there a difference in shelf life between different concentrates and tinctures?

Cheers

interesting question. can't add much to the topic, but I did want to add this. I have this oil dish and the last time I made any oil was in Dec of last year. so all my concentrate is that old or more. so the dish I put my concentrate in has these cranny like edges in it. and I was surprised to find I could pull a couple more dabs from a jar I thought was empty.

the dab was good, but I felt was lacking in taste. sublimate tastes better than this did imo... so that was a concentrate that was about 8 months old. and it had lost it's taste. as for storage though it was exposed to air in a small container (out of the light) at room temp the whole time.

I keep my stash in the fridge, if memory serves me correct, the cold helps prolong the storage. I my self have keep my wax stash about 3 months and I havent noticed a change in quality

considering it as a "food product" and comparing it to something like olive oil you would look to end of life issues like off-flavors and rancidity. those are generally caused or accelerated by light and moisture exposure. cooling is great, just have to keep it sealed air-tight or condensation can really up the water content.

I dont believe that even if it a glob of oil was left in the sun, it would not lose potency. You would absolutely change the consistency, and also as a side effect, lose taste as terpenes evaporate off. But oil is exactly that, oil. It will never fully evaporate. So obviously airtight, light sealed, and cool storage are ideal. Even if somehow you managed to find a dab lost somewhere after 20 years, smoking it would still be effective, even though it would probably taste like SH!T from all the dust deposits on it. With that being said, even in ideal storage your prone to consistency change, so after a few weeks or months it may look a little different but itll be just as effective. Like I always say, im no scientist, I simply observe and conclude my surroundings, So i very well could be wrong but I'm fairly sure im on the right course lol.

I have left some oil that was shatterish, in a hot car for a week. When I looked at the oil again it was more of a honeycomb consistency, it did however become more of a darker hue, it didn't really change taste or high all that much. This hash was made by co2 btw. The same has also has happen to me In the frigde as well, only the difference was the color got lighter instead of darker. I have also had some keif left in the car for a while. The kief turned to a really nasty brown and taste was effected, although it wasnt horrible to smoke. As far as the high was concerned, it still got me blasted.

I would think concentrate shelf life should be much better than flowers. There is no plant mass to degrade only waxes and oils. Oils can go rancid but thc and cannabionoids are anti-oxidants so they might be able to stabalize whatever plant oil remains.

I would imagine it varies depending on quality of concentrate. But you can help by controlling other factors too: "storing fats and oils in a cool, dark place with little exposure to oxygen or free radicals, since heat and light accelerate the rate of reaction of fats with oxygen."

Riddle me this...if this happens easily or not why isn't cooking oil sold in dark bottles?

Thinking about the quality of the extraction affecting shelf-life got me thinking about tetralabs pure gold. I scoured their site looking for info there but could only find "long shelf life" mentioned. Maybe they have more specific info if someone contacts them. There must be someone on here that uses their delivery service.

Excellent question. I would NEVER use an oil that came in a clear plastic bottle. Of course, I also wouldn't touch the oils that are sold that way, as they are nothing but detrimental to health.

My culinary oils are bought/kept in very dark bottles, kept either in the fridge or in a dark cupboard away from heat, depending on the type of oil.

I have seen evoo in light bottles...not clear but not blacked out so I am suspicious of the info we get. I keep oils in my pantry but of course light does get in if the doors aren't all the way closed. I also have a squirt bottle for daily use which is in the cabinet but still not a blacked out bottle.

This also brings me to thinking about painted or using tape on the mason jars some of use put our herb into. I have my jelly ones in a lunch bag but half the time I don't zip it. If I black out the jars I wouldn't have to.

All that said I don't use very expensive oil but do use olive oil bought at costco in bulk. I have never had an issue with it going bad but veggie oil gets yucky after a year or so. It doesn't taste the same but not rancid.

It is all just curious as answers are never easy to find in this world of computers.

I've left oils out in parchment folds for months at a time (forgotten) and have noticed that the original floral flavors dull within a month or two and are replaced by more traditional hashy flavors. Effects become more muted or dulled and the spark is lost. Casual precautions don't seem to be much protective, the fridge and a nice tight cap seem essential for real conservation.

im not sure I would want to make the comparison of a marijuana extract vs a cooking oil. Say, canola or olive oil.

the things in the extract we are concerned with breaking down are chemicals (drugs) that affect our minds and bodies. the extract is generally thick, sticky (sometimes solid and under tension... shatter extract), and a pain in the butt to handle once it's become messy. cooking oils, while not washing off easily either, are not tacky nor ever prone to shattering. I feel they are 2 different things. I couldn't chuck down a chicken breast and cook it in purple kush oil could i? haha I don't think the non stick part of the oil would work.

I'm no culinary expert, but cooking oils are to act as lube for food right? (oversimplification, I know... but I think it's funny) in all seriousness, how long does a bottle of oil last? mine are probably lasting 6-12 months. and I store them in the dark when not in use too. habit more than any other reason.
