Got some new mouthpieces that arrived today from Ireland... I'm kinda scared to try one... Hate that burnt plastic smell... They do have the X on the base so I'm kinda worried :( I just ordered some from vapenow the other day that are old stock thankfully!!

Anybody get some new style with X's that DON'T MELT??? I assume that some with X's must be the new, improved moulded type.
X is the new type, yes. I have no experience as to which works best. I have melted 2 old and 1 new so far. I get the feeling that iolite just designed this aspect poorly. This news is all over the internet, so they have a chance to fix this properly or this will become what they are remembered for.

I'm tempted to have a small aluminum stem made in a metal shop. Just long enough to get the rubber hose piece on it.

yeah, it's just basic material characteristics. plastic is complex stuff. (that's why i like borosilicate glass)
Is there any info one way or the other about the heat issue?

Where's the Iolite guy? I'm sure he can help us out.

Reece, what would that tell us? That the Ultem 1000 can get soft? We know the stuff gets soft.

I have a feeling that while some units are cooler than required, others may be hotter than required. If the temp goes from spec target temp of 375F to maybe 400F, this might explain things also.

Just wanted to fulfill a promise and publicly thank Mr. Oglesby and the Iolite team for the excellent communication/customer service. I had problems with breakage of the mouthpieces that were originally shipped with my unit. I emailed them, was informed that this was an isssue they had with some of the mothpieces, and was promptly sent a 3-pack of replacements which have worked without problem. Thanks again.

Damn, that 's a great idea! Kudos for coming up with that! The shorter the better so as not to dissipate the heat.

kalingas post is good info... shows the plastic melts (to work with) at roughly 660 degrees F, and softens at 426 F... (slightly lower under pressure) but still under the range of the iolite... so i think there are no real worries with the plastic....

Sounds great. My EXACT story. However, the new ones break / melt / soften perhaps worse than the originals. Currently there is no solution available.

I'm not so sure. I have felt that the general community is expressing the softening of the plastic causing the break. I know myself that the mouthpieces have sort of fallen off when hot, and definitely not snapped off as they would when cold. Look at all the pics of broken mouthpieces. They all show a smooth, glassy area on the break point. Clearly a melting / softening causing this.

I'm beginning to think we have a broader thermostat issue with these units. Some have seen temps apparently too low to vape THC. I am now thinking that some units (like mine) have drifted to higher temps.

If the calibrated goal temp is 375F as stated by iolite, then a drift of 10-30 degrees upwards gets close to a softening point. Keep in mind that even a 10% error up is 37F.

Additionally, if the air temp in the chamber is to be 375, it is reasonable that perhaps the metal being heated needs to be somewhat in excess of this 375.

Exactly. like just protruding 3/8" to get the rubber hose on it. Having something rigid would eliminate the whole issue. You wouldn't want your mouth on it, but we still have plastic for that.

I will be ordering an Iolite within a few days and I was just wondering which online retailer you would suggest? If possible I want to order directly from my-iolite.com but I wasn't sure if they shipped to the US. Also does anybody have any experience with gotvape.com?

I thought the concern was the safety of inhaling through plastic which had a max temperature rating very close to the temps of the Iolite. I guess I misunderstood.

I got my Iolite from gotvape. It stopped igniting within a month and gotvape (Cori and a guy whose name I forget) suggested some troubleshooting tips. When they didn't work they had me ship the unit back and sent me a new one. They didn't wait to receive the malfunctioning unit before shipping the replacement. I just had to email them the tracking number (which meant I had to ship express mail, ouch).

The new unit had a problem with shutting off and then turning on again requiring me to push the button again. After mentioning the problem here Mr. Oglesby (Iolite) contacted me and had me send the unit to Ireland to be repaired. I got the repaired unit back in 10 days (which is fast if you ask me) and although it has done the off/on thing a couple of times, it is working great.

that would be my concern -- with any device that uses plastic of any form in a vaporizer. i think turkey bags which Reynolds says to limit to 350F is problematic, too.

cleaning a plastic tube whip with alcohol leeches out the softeners and turns the tubing brittle -- or so it has been reported.

willieR, i was just going by the stats on the info sheet.... and in theory anyways, it shouldnt cause a problem because of the 426 F softening temp for the plastic and if the temp was fluctuating as much as you say, i would think you would start seeing the herb burning, although, of course there is going to be a temp variance from iolite to iolite, as well as the temp cycling hot and cooling, but, i dont think there is a huge variance on the temps, i believe the "melting" that was occurring was due to a manufacture fault, not inject molding it correctly or whatever, because the other stems i bought on ebay were made of the identical material and i havent had any problems yet with them (no softening....at least none i could see) but all that said, yes, i just dont like the idea that if i accidentally hit it on something that i run the risk of snapping the plastic... whether or not it can handle the heat is one thing, but just the fact of it being plastic, lends itself to easier breakage....i was going to put a metal hose barb on mine as soon as i can find the exact metric size of the threads....(although i ll keep the regular stems for when i want to go stealth mode and want the black "antennae" look) i guess im going to have to take the stem piece down to the local home depot and start screwing into different shit until i find the right size.

I know it is normal for the Iolite to vent/burn some of the butane even after you turn it off. But I turned mine off a good half an hour ago and still like every minute it is igniting. This does not normally happen, this is a first time thing, what is wrong?

doesnt sound good shadowlink12, did you try turning it back on then off again to see if the switch maybe didnt work quite right.... otherwise, i think you need to be sending that in.... and djelimon, yes, you must of gotten lucky, the stems were breaking almost immediately after being exposed to heat....

Has anyone heard of a way to adjust output temp? There may be a way, but I'm imagining it would involve peeling off the labels, removing screws and looking around in there. And invalidate the warrantee

hey willieR ....if i recall... somewhere in the last 48 pages,:/ someone (or a couple of people) has taken one apart... maybe they could answer that....

OK just opened the unit. Very nice inside but no method that I could see (after much inspection) to adjust temp. The thermostat is buried inside a sealed unit as far as I can tell.

I am suffering from broken stem tooo. Dont fancy a replacement plastic one as i can see the same problem happening again. Anyone had any luck with finding something metal that will screw in to the bowl? Think that with some silicone tubing could be the way forward.

Ooh Willie, dont tell them or they will screw you . Dont cha know its complicated high technology that is non user serviceable. did ya see the little bit of sealing wax type stuff? that shows if the unit has been tampered with. better hope it dont break down. now! Did ya no read the whole thread!? cost me 180e and the company about 5 times that.

Why did it cost iolite 5 times that?

I haven't found suitable material. There is a difference between metal tube and metal pipe. Pipe has a thick enough wall to take a thread. I'm sure it's out there, I just haven't found it.

Just for fun, I tried a load with a bare chamber attached to silicone tubing. It works, doesn't get as brown, though. But I did not use any insulation around the chamber. I found I got better hits if I pushed chamber into the base tightly.

Here is a PD tube attached to the Iolite. If a person could drill out the white thingy or file away enough of the white thingy this might work.
