Concentrates?

So......I have a VIP Vape Pen coming my way. The problem is, is that I have never used concentrates before and know absolutely nothing about them. I'm not looking to make my own, but rather, purchase from a dispensary. Being that I am totally clueless about them, can ya point me in the right direction (link or links) that will give me a quick and dirty lesson on concentrates.

I'm not only concerned about the potency, but also concerned about the health issues that may present themselves when different modes of extraction is used. Like I've heard that BHO is great as far as potency goes, but is not the healthiest thing to suck into your lungs. Don't know if this is true or not.

Then I've seen Co2 wax, which I am assuming is water extraction, which I also assume is less potent but healthier. No idea if this is true either.

Anyways, a point in the right direction will help a bunch. Thanks.....

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
The extraction method safety debacle is long, old, and as far as I'm concerned..... unsubstantiated when proper purge guidelines are followed.

If you happen to attend ICmag forum, there are reputable aged members that debate the issue, but in the end a lot comes down to personal belief/preference. After all..... the mj use issue is not back up 'enough' by scientific study of use nor long term effect that govt money would pay for.

Don't have any direct links on the matter to share really.... I simply do the best I can learning for different forums and make a self informed decision in process.

That being said, I tend to worry more about breathing the air outside opposed to making my own qwiso/bho's, but a reputable dispensary should be trustworthy enough to purchase from given the spectrum analyzer testing most offer when their name is on the line ;)

I know very little about concentrates but I do know that CO2 wax is extracted by gas not water.

If you aren't going to make your own, then I would suggest getting some Pure Gold. The oil that I see in the dispensaries here in SoCal is gross.... it's all budder and wax that was obviously made by over spraying low quality trim. I wouldn't touch the stuff if they gave it to me for free.

C02 extraction isn't water, it's CO2 in a supercritical state where the CO2 can act as a solvent. If you can't find any pure gold, then I'd probably go with something extracted using CO2.

Thanks DT.

I can get the following at CornerStone Research:
Which is described as follows: "Fractionally distilled THC extraction. Tested at Steep Hill Labs. Solvent free.
1/2 Gram in a Squeezable Gel Capsule--$40.00"

This is also kinda interesting:

with the following description: "GoldMist makes it easy to achieve the appropriate level of medication. Unlike edible medications that you swallow and digest, you know within a few minutes if the initial dosage was sufficient. Each 3.5ml vial of GoldMist contains 80 2.5mg sprays. Immediate analgesia, good for stress relief and pain management.--$40.00
2.5 mg of fractionally distilled THC in a sublingual atomizer--cinnamon flavored"

Or, the following from a different dispensary:

Concentrate

Crystal Coma Co2 Wax
30 .5g
55 g

Private Reserve OG Co2 Wax ( Experts Only )

What do ya think, and being that a gram of flowers last me about a month because I only do a few hits every night, how long would a half a gram last me of these concentrates?

Looks like you definitely have some choices :)

PureGold has the advantage of strict quality control, so you know exactly what you are getting... the down side is PureGold is the ultimate generic oil. The manufacturing process strips away any unique qualities the starting material had. It's extremely potent and pure, but it has no character. The CO2 concentrates will be somewhat less potent than the pure gold, but will have more character. You'll notice the difference in taste, aroma and high.. making CO2 less predicable, but potentially more interesting.

If possible, you might want to get a half gram of PureGold and then try one of the CO2 extracts just to compare and decide what you like.

Before I started doing concentrates, a gram of bud use to last me a week or more. Now I do 2-4 small dabs of oil a day and maybe slightly less than a gram of flower per day. A gram of oil will last me 1-3 weeks just depending on what my ratio of flower to oil is at the moment.

GoldMist is very interesting stuff. I bought some once just to see what it was like. It was laced with Cinnamon oil and spraying it under my tongue was like stuffing 3 or 4 cinnamon Altoids under my tongue... very intense. It took 3 or 4 sprays before I noticed anything. It was a more subtle high, and would probably be good when you want to take the edge off but need to stay functional.

Final thought. Don't underestimate just how powerful oil is. Doing too much oil is an extremely unpleasant experience.

Wow you have a huge selection of c02 oil, I am so damn jealous. I'd stick to the C02 oil or pure gold; although I haven't tried them, I've just read a lot of great things. If I had a choice I wouldn't touch alcohol or butane extractions, but that's all I can make so that's what I'm stuck with. I've seen a lot of disgusting dispensary oil here on FC. I wouldn't mess with bho unless you make it or you know that it was well made. But it sounds like you have an excellent dispensary to visit.

My consumption has dropped since I began using concentrates too. I used to use about two grams a week when I was only vaping and occasionally smoking medicating a few times daily. Now I stretch a quarter over 5 weeks by making a concentrate out of about 5 grams of it and vaping the other 2 grams. So I now use 1.4 grams a week and medicate just as much, maybe more. I enjoy the speed of dabbing vs vaping and the less pungent smell.

Speaking of having an extremely unpleasant experience; the other day I broke out my glass dabber and heated it so that I could melt a lot of flakes of wax onto it for a dab. I didn't realize that I had like twice the amount of wax of the biggest dab I had ever done up to that point. Needless to say I took the entire hit and have never felt so uncomfortable from weed in my entire life. I curled up under a blanket for an hour trying to ward off the nausea and the completely unnecessary paranoia. I didn't want anything to do with weed for two days... not cool

But it's listed as C02 wax, not C02 oil.

Wax... Oil. Six ones, half a dozen. Its all the same, just a different consistency. The waxes can be mostly removed with winterization anyways. A very easy process.

What's with the sudden jump to concentrates?

Be aware that some dispensaries will label wax as Co2 thinking it will save them from getting in trouble for selling BHO. If its waxy, it's probably not a Co2 extraction. Everything I have seen from my guy is oil/jelly like and same with other brands sold in nor-cal. A friend of mine in SF was just telling me about a delivery service he uses. Their driver recently got pulled over with their line of "Co2" wax and now they don't have it on their menu anymore as the cop told them its not allowed. It's no longer up, but if you ask you shall receive. I've seen the stuff, it's BHO.

Hell no fire that shhh up! Lol j/k I've never done, but have wanted. From what I hear the major factor is the purging. There are a ton of videos on YouTube that might help. I'm going to get some 99% iso and everclear and make my own. Maybe butane down the road.

I'd be surprised if the Organalabs CO2 isn't the real deal. Comes in an easy-to-load plunger (although if its a runnier batch you have to be gentle or the whole half gram can squirt out)

Thank you for starting this thread! I, too, am looking to start with concentrates, and I ordered a VIP2, as I also want to vape glycerin tinctures (I have a couple bottles of them already).

There is a brand of oil here called Dama Oil... there is a THC one, and a CBD one.

My reasons are that, often when I really need to be heavily medicated, I'm stuck either with an edible that will take a long time to kick in, or vaping some Indica, but that wears off rather soon. Middle of the night, when I'm aching in every joint, getting up to hobble to the kitchen to turn on the NO2, waiting to vape, waiting to vape a bit more... rushing the vape, or getting really, really alert and awake due to the time involved. Not good at 2am.

I'd also like to have something really small and stealthy for day trips, where I don't have to haul herb/vaporizer, or have to rely on the PowerUp capsules that I currently use -- actually, I want to find an exact or better substitute for them, and I suspect that concentrates are the answer. I need 3 capsules to get me through a work day. That's $5, plus my edibles & vaping when I get home. I really think that concentrates will save me some cash.

Thats the thing i love about my 710 pen, vaping concentrates neither leaves a lingering smell on you but also nothing in your vehicle, so for someone like me who wants a little medication on the go during the day without scrutinization especially at work, the 710 is perfect, especially at work :)

Yesterday I took my VIP2 pen vape with me, loaded with some sativia & chocolate chunk tincture.

I managed to head off two hot flashes! Just snuck a few stealthy hits, and the flash eased right back off.

Prepare to see your tolerance get FUCKED buddy. Not that it is all bad, but concentrates are going to ruin your total lack of tolerance. 1 gram a MONTH... you make me feel like a monster using 1/2 - 1g a day!

I honestly don't know that with your tolerance there is an appropriate dosage of concentrates. Try ONE single hit. If a gram lasts you a month figure that this is roughly 7ish grams in a single gram of hash.

I'm not only concerned about the potency, but also concerned about the health issues that may present themselves when different modes of extraction is used. Like I've heard that BHO is great as far as potency goes, but is not the healthiest thing to suck into your lungs. Don't know if this is true or not.

Okay, a quick and dirty on concentrates. Well, maybe not so quick.

When done correctly, the extraction methods, BHO vs C02 etc, affect mostly price, taste, and consistency. You'll find C02's to be slightly less potent (marginal difference, I've read an average of 10%), of a better flavor profile, and a great consistency for the harder to load vape pens. It's generally thought of in a more positive light than butane extraction since it's safer to work with, but they are more expensive.

BHO gets a bad rap because people have literally died; explosions in home extraction labs and the like. Barring that, in terms of potency, it's the better of the two in most cases. You find a lot of different consistencies (runny oil, shatter, wax, budder, honeycomb, taffy, crumble) which give you a lot of options in case the VIP needs a certain kind. If not, the differences in consistency only have to do with ending steps of extraction. For example, budder is just wax that's whipped when warm for an airy finished product. Taste will always have to do with your starting product, but, in the case of BHO, can be greatly influenced by how much remaining butane is in the extract, it can taste disgusting if not purged well.

It is important that both be purged of the solvents used to extract (especially at 55/G, that should be given), so always ask how it was purged (usually vac) and shoot for the most well purged you can find.

Health wise I read C02 is safer than Butane, but the amounts of butane you'll find in even the most badly purged BHO would not likely be at toxic levels. Here's a link and some commentary on the subject from OF:

The stuff is just not that dangerous:

"This product is considered to be non-toxic by inhalation. Inhalation of concentrations of about 10,000
ppm may cause central nervous system depression such as dizziness, drowsiness, headache, and
similar narcotic symptoms, but no long-term effects."
http://www.hovensa.com/pdf/butane.pdf

Note that 8 hours exposure to 1/10 of the intoxicating level is allowed. It's considered OK to live and work around it, breathing it normally, without ill effect.

OF

After that, I'd say what you want to look for are lighter oils, your blondes, light greens to green-yellows. These are usually the most pungent as well, but there are outliers to this test. Try to find oils with as little particulates (left over plant matter) as possible; I'm guessing the VIP runs with a heat coil, and those can gunk up real fast from wax with tiny amounts of plant matter. This is also important for those who use nails for concentrate, the more particulates, the more residue left on the heating surface, which calculates to a pain in the ass.

Hope you enjoy your new vape pen and welcome to the world of wax.

Maybe you should try an alcohol tincture like Green Dragon, or, if you like pills, you might like some of BadKitty's methods of on GrassCity. She does some great canna-capsules with kief / hash.

Good luck with your VIP's. If you like the style of these pens but aren't very happy with performance, a comparable (maybe better) entry level pen like this is the Vapor Brothers Dabber. After that, check out the Omicron / Persei, or the Revolution / Cera.
