I've been vaping for about 10 months, started with a Vapor Daddy. I bought a Volcano Classic with Easy Valve a couple of weeks ago and love it. I'm still learning how to get the most out of my herb with it. I'm currently going through bud much more quickly with my Volcano than with my Vapor Daddy, but I am still learning to maximize efficiency. I used the Vapor Daddy until my ABV was dark brown, but the ABV with the Volcano is much lighter in color. I usually increase the temperature by a notch after each bag, starting at 6. Anyone have any efficiency tips for the Volcano?

The bud I've been vaping lately has been high quality kush, and there are a lot of crystals that come off the bud when grinding. I find that when using the regular screen, a lot of the crystals fall through and land atop the heating unit. Those crystals get cooked every time the Volcano is turned on. Anyone have any cleaning tips for this? If I removed the top screen, would I void the warranty?

I find the liquid pad to work very well with small amounts of bud and crystals, usually a pinch of each. I get 2 cloudy bags, with the 3rd one being decent enough to finish.

cdcchare - are you stirring your bowl on the heating element? and are you leaving your "bowl" on the cano when not using it between bags?

I never leave the filling chamber, "bowl", on the Volcano if it's not being used to fill the bag or preheat. I stir the bowl between each filling.

When I'm ready to vape, I put the bowl on the Volcano and turn the air on until vapor comes out, then I put the bag on.

Everyone associates the Volcano and other Forced-Air/Balloon Vaporizers as a "Party" or "Group" Vaporizer because the ballon filled with vapor can be shared by a group of people. However, I find myself using the Zephyr Ion and Volcano when I'm alone...all the time. I can fill up a bag and enjoy the vapor at my own leisure...I don't feel rushed whatsoever. They are efficient, tasty, and quality vaporizers that do the job well. Sure...it takes a little bit of time to vaporizer with these units, but it's definitely worth it. Whip-style vaporizers just don't do it for me.

You made the following comment in another site:

"Volcano Vaporizer is unparralled when efficiency is compared."
---VaporNation

Ummm.........do you really feel that it is more efficient than either the Purple Days or the Myrtlezap for I don't think that any member here would agree with that statement.

Never go with a knock-off. Volcano's are one of a kind...never settle for less. Quality goes a long way...especially with these Vaporizers. You really get what you pay for.

I have very high quality bud, too.... caked in kief. There's always a lot of crystal left over in the coffee grinder, as well as mixed through the ground bud. When I stir the bud in the chamber between bags, crystal falls through the screen. It has also fallen through the screen onto the top of the heating element. So, I try not to overload the chamber with crystal. For a while I was even sifting most of it out using the screen in my 4 piece Space Case, but this diminished the high. Now I keep the crystal in the ground bud, but I don't brush all the crystal out of the grinder. It's just too much, and a lot will fall through the screen. I collect the excess crystal for other uses.

I read a lot about the Volcano before I bought it, and I came across a lot of people saying that they'd start at 5.5 and gradually increase it, but only once has 5.5 produced good bags for me. Sativas vaporize at a lower temperature than indicas, so for sativas, I start at 6.25, then move to 6.5, then 6.75, and finally 7. With indicas, I start at 6.5. I do a couple of bags at each setting, but might only get one bag at each of the last two higher settings. I stir the chamber with each setting change, and I re-grind it with my fingers before the 6.75 bag.

Those are all the tips I can think of right now.

It might not be the most effecient but if you value your health it is the safest. It will never over cook the herb and is always consistent. Your PD works at a higher temp so you might get more vapors but also more harmful chemicals because part of your stem is getting close to combustion.

I have a PD and it's nice but not for everyone. I find it to harsh for such a small reward.

I find that when moving up only a quarter of a notch, it's not much of a difference and here's why. The Volcano Classic moves up 12*C every notch/number. So from 6 to 7 it goes from 190*C to 202*C. The air temperature is always fluctuating about +/- 5*C. Moving it up .25 of a notch (or 3 degrees) won't even make the Volcano heat up to that point unless it is already a few degrees lower than the intended temperature.

I may save my kief to make hash, or just keep using the liquid pad when vaping kief, as it does make great bags. I did a lot of research before buying as well. I was also able to use one for a little while before I bought one. I decided on a bag system since I already had a whip style. I even tried the EQ, but the Volcano is my favorite when it comes to bag filling.

Anyone have any luck changing the bags on Easy Valve?

I change my easy valve bag every 2 weeks. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the old bag. Once you have it apart you will see how to put it back together. I use the largest Reynolds turkey bag and tie off the end with a rubber band so the seam doesn't leak.

Clean all the parts with alcohol while you have it apart.

Good points. I may try doing both indicas and sativas on 6, 6.5, and 7 to see how it works out. But I think I've tried and re-tried bags on 6, and I just don't get much vapour on that setting, while I do get results on 6.25.

Anyone have any luck changing the bags on Easy Valve?

Check this link for how to change Easy Valve bags:

http://vapenow.com/images/pshoots/ps20070925ev/

I do it differently than this link does. I don't put the new bag through the thick plastic ring as they do in the pictures. I just put it around the outside of that ring and the black rubber band around the bag. If you put the bag through the ring, it significantly blocks airflow into the bag, and vapour collects on the extra edges of the bag in a way that they do not collect on the smooth edge of the ring.

It's a slightly difficult process because while you put the black rubber ring around the plastic ring (which is clear in my Easy Valves), you have to try to keep the bag spread evenly around the ring, and you also have to keep the ring and bag in line with each other (ring not at an angle to the sides of the bag) so that the bag will not be tipped to the side when it is filled. Once you've got the black rubber band keeping the bag on the ring, it's also difficult to press the whole thing back down into the orange mouthpiece casing. It takes a lot of downward force... strength, weight, whatever you've got.

The plastic ring that you attach the bag to is important: note how it was in the orange piece when you popped it all apart. Note which side of the ring was facing down, because it has to go back the same way obviously, and it's a real pain to struggle to get the new bag + black rubber band on and then realize the ring is backwards, thus making you have to take the bag off and put it back on the right way.

I've been reusing Easy Valves for a while, and it's a great way to save money, but the soft rubber gaskets inside the mouthpiece wear out eventually. They lose their ability to seal the vapour inside the bag after months and months of being pushed open by the black mouthpiece tip.

Where elmomuzz uses a rubber band on the end of his bags, I pinch the bag together to a point where something could be wrapped around it and then I fold it over and use 3 twist ties to hold it tightly together.

I recently bought a Volcano digit after owning a vapir and an arizer extreme and what convinced me in the end, regarding tha cano was that all the medical research(in britain at least)that has been done with vaping marijuana over smoking ,the staff all seemed to use the volcano. It does exactly what it says it does. Believe
the hype. This device is worth every penny.I turned to vaping from smoking a few years back when I was diagnosed with Emphesyma. Thers only so much fudge cake you can eat thought I, when my pal said, get a vaporizer....A what? I asked and he explained.I have over the years smoked some of the worlds best hash and bud (stuff not seen anymore like temple balls, or Kashmiris....but to me nothing beats vaporizing and if you can get some really beautiful full melt bubble hash or some real Charis, then you are really talking as this takes the Volcano to another level.Lets hear it for thCano man! You gets what you pays for and 350. was worth iPass me that balloon!

I bought mine a few months ago after an extensive usage session at a VW festival. For the record I've got the latest "revision" Volcano (classic) with the Lazy Valve (easy valve).

I notice a lot of people complain about it's price, but I know people who smoke as much as the cost of the Volcano in two weeks. I'm just saying, anyone who spends money on quality product two, three or more times a month can afford it if they really want. Another point is, I don't see any other Vaporizer OEM websites that are as extensively detailed as S&B's website. There's pictures of scientists and engineers with a room full of Volcanos. The R&D they've put into it is no joke. To paraphrase Erowid -- Know your mind, know your source, know body. The research I've seen on the Volcano alone makes me absolutely trust it as a device. I trust papers because well they're papers. Same with glass. Metal is no-go, however. Hate metal. I just wouldn't feel comfortable vaping out of any other Vaporizer because I don't feel like I know the people behind it.

Some people don't like bags, yeah I can understand that. Can't argue with you if you prefer a whip.

Some people say "my friends don't like waiting on bags to fill" -- to that I say your friends are assholes and if you're generous enough to share your Vaporizer with them tell them to GTFO ---> In stark contrast, my friends find it neat and interesting as the bag fills. PS - It takes 30 seconds on a stock bag, big deal.

"Volcano is too big/loud or it's not portable." Hey, I don't live with my parents. If hiding your vaping device is a concern for your parents/grandparents/spouse/significant other figure out a way around it. My TV at regular volume drowns out the Volcano.

I just wanted to end this with, this is not a paid advertisement for anyone. I'm not a shill, bot, plant or anything of the sort. I've just noticed NO ONE gives the 'Cano love on most vaporizer forums. What's the deal?

I have been searching the web for tips and tricks but i cant really find anything good that isnt repeated on every site.

I just bought a classic with the easy valve and wanted to know how you guys vape?

Do you turn it on for 10 seconds without the head and then put the head on?

Do you put the head on and turn on the fan and wait for vapor then put the top on?

Anything else i dunno please reply with i like to master things like this haha

sfld,
As long as this thread is near the top. I thought I'd weigh in on the HA vs. the Volcano, now that I own both.

Honestly, short of the complete (see: conspicuous) lack of a valve system to keep vapor from leaking when the bag is in use, the HA blows better bags. They are denser, tastier, and the vaporization chamber of the HA is inherently far more "efficient" than the volcano. I have the Upgraded stock pump I believe, and it takes maybe 1 and 1/3 as long as the Volcano to fill, barely worth mentioning time wise.

ABV out of the HA is an entirely different caliber than the Volcano - if you press the temperature in the HA, you might as well toss your ABV, since you got virtually everything you got out of it. HA can also do solid material.

Just imo, of course.

HA requires two plugs and looks less elegant/expensive. Big whoop.

Charlie, I am not saying the HA is not more efficient in extracting the goodies as it seems to be one of its strenghts, plus I have never used it...

But I can say I have significantly improved my Cano's bag vapor density & flavor & conservative efficiency through a few steps:

Only put enough MJ to cover the screen with a thin layer. Rough grind at the beginning. you'll regrind at 3rd balloon!

Make sure you have no "holes" in the layer, where you can see light or the SS mesh), and pack the "french press" thight, to reduce again the air flow!

Always use the LIQUID PAD: even for MJ... it seems to improve air/vapor ratio + keep heat better + keep crystals better when stirring between bags.

START AT LOW TEMPS, I really think that's the secret to get your even brown ABV at the end of your sesh. I have heard many people saying "I cannot brownish my cano's ABV...I swear I can (never combust but get it real brown...no doubt!).

1st bag 170 C: put the chamber on the cano without the attached balloon, put the fan on, count till 10...clips the bag.
Little stirring...
2nd balloon 180 repeat process but count till 5
Little stirring....regrind the MJ in your hand to a powder consistency...
3rd balloon 190 same counting till 3
4th balloon 200 directly clipped on, no counting
5th ballon ("the couchlock balloon") 210 directly clipped on, no counting

Again, I am not saying the extraction isn't better on the HA and I know it has the ability of vaporising ungrinded buds but... IMO, for its design(valve, balloon, chamber, power supply, integrated pump...), reliability, easiness to use daily with concentrates and with a few of the above tips I AM STILL SO IN LOVE WITH MY CANO! :D

FLskwat,
It's a benefit to me and the forum to hear from someone else who has multiple bag blowers. While we're on the topic, I see you've sold your Extreme, could you sum up it's bag quality versus Cano and HA?

I'll try this liquid pad black magic you speak of, I've never heard of such a thing. I always shied away from making use of the liquid pad with concentrates or bud, fearing that concentrates would leak through that, then go down into the heating element.

My cano regimen was usually dried stuff, one at 5, one at 5.5, one at 6, then one at 8. I usually packed pretty skimpy compared to some people I've seen pack the cano, probably not much more than what you speak. I always advocate starting low, around 335F, in any vape, if it can do the job. I'm actually a little pissed right now in this department - my DBV will not go low enough (most will apparently) to properly vape a load with an Extreme screen, a mod people do for their SSV/DBV which increases efficiency/reduces bowl size. I can get two good ropes and then it's pretty brown, others report being able to get far more.. Oh, well.

I can say that my cano has given 100% trouble free service, and the previous owner too. But the HA at 170 blows it out of the water, in all things to me except style - I'll try your new technique soon and report back, I could very well be wrong. The mouthpiece-side of the valve system of the Cano trounces the bloody simple plastic mouthpiece on the HA, this is absolutely certain. Volcano is a far more elegant device, as I said. But it's just one of those cases where I don't know if it's money well spent, and if you don't have money to burn, you might want to keep walking.

EQV does the balloon job but:
-the replacement procedure is A MESS. Yes it works, and when you get the trick it's a 10 mn operation... but common, compared to the rest, it's a mess! ;)
-the filling time is too long. I get the proper thickness I want with the fan on 2 setting.
-the elbow IMO is a con in design: just check how much & how fast resinous build-ups accumulate in the 90 angle portion of your elbow... Eventhough you can harvest that later on, to me those are lost goodies during the bag process!
-the obligation to use the Arizer bags (unless you do a custom bowl & MOD to adapt an easy valve and then buy hoven bags) is also a con.
-the lack of closing valve (both for keeping the vape in the bag and when separating the bag form the elbow) is IMHO a con too.
-On the EQV, the heating time of the element is really fast BUT you have to wait 5 to 10 mn for your glass to heat and 2 mn. for the material to percolate... so the overall process is a bit too long for me. On the other hand if time isn't an issue for you, I admit blowing a bag on fan 1 gives incredible results in term of thickness!
-Last but not least, in the PRO's part: the remote & the timers are really helpful features!

As stated above,I have never used an HA so I can't compare...sorry!

Yes Charlie: test the Liquid Pad Voodoo magic (LOL)! And please test it on MJ (the secret for MJ is the packing: no "wholes", thin layer, french press tight + the countdown process described before clipping the first balloons) but ALSO on concentrates (as described in my 2nd post in this thread):
http://www.fuckcombustion.com/viewtopic.php?id=4752
To me, this setting gets me te most beautiful flavored bags of concentrates and is so easy to use/clean! My cano fairly rivalizes with my Essential VAaapp for that! My concentrates never dripped on the heating element, but if you're afraid you could even imagine putting 2 SS pads for security...
Please let us know your feedbacks!

For the DBV problem: Yes my mod. SSV (EQV screen) vapes the hole bowl on minimum settings (mine is 8H45 AM). I can get 3 more hairy hits when I increase the temp around 10: 30 am at the end!
BUT: if I pack it too tight or/and don't inhale fast enough or/and don't move my whand during the hit...I ill get a black scorching point in the bowl.
I think I red somewhere you had less power with your DBV plugged somewhere in the house...Maybe that's your solution, LOL!

I totally understand your "money well spent" theory. It was to me, but that's so subjective!;)

Dude,

I've had my Volcano Digit for almost a couple years now... and I wish I had heard of your little trick sooner! The liquid screen is way better... and I just threw in a little bowl's worth and filled up 4 big oven bags according to your temps... and I'm about to do it again while I work on a script for my screenwriting class...

oh yeah, it still didn't get super brown... just the regular cano dirtiness I'm used to, but I like leaving the leftovers a little potent in case I ever run out or cook or something (I also started on 355 instead of 340ish... went 355, stir, 375, stir, 395, 410).

Anyways, thanks. This forum is already ridiculously awesome.

I find my cano abv gets pretty dark if I blow a bag at maximum temp. I rarely take it that far. Does the HA just get hotter or is there some other voodoo going on? My usual routine is a generous pack. First bag at 360, 365, 370, 375, 380 then regrind in my palm and a final bag at 385. Since this is usually done solo it generally does the trick. :D

here are the temperatures I use and why:

temp 320, 338, 357,[366+ Tired] 374, 428

357 - No sedative effects. Heady, not stoney,
so it's perfect for when you have to do shit or be
around people. Also the most efficient (get more
bags out of less), high lasts the longest, and tastes)
366 - 1st sedative kicks in. Active high, with just a little bit of stone
375 - 2 more sedatives kick in. This will put you on your ass.
440 - Another 2 sedatives. This will put you to sleep. !

You'll typically get "some" plant material going through the screens regardless what vape you're using and it's one of the reasons why many like to operate their vaporizers through their bongs.
