Generally, i like to start at 12V and slowly work my way up in 2V increments. it's a lot of experimenting with voltage setting, stem load amount, distance of material from heat port, draw speed, etc. have fun playing with your Dog though :D

2v increments? How high do you go? :o

WHOOPS. totally meant 0.2V increments. sorry about that. took a couple rips off the UD through my bubbler before posting that one.

edit: but to add to it. i'll usually vape between 12.8-13.4V depending on material being used. i'll run as high as 13.8V for that very last hit with but only keep it on that for like 1-2 minutes max. if my UD is just sitting around and not being used for a session, i'll keep it at 12V or less.

For VVPS, I like to run my dogs anywhere between 12.8 and 13.4v but it all depends on the material. This is using about .13, medium grind with a short 14mm glass tube that has lots of airflow. Airflow is really important, not enough airflow and too much voltage you can char your material or combust. Too much airflow and not enough voltage and you won't get any visible clouds. Unfortunately no single answer works for everyone because we all use different instruments/techniques to suit our own needs but you might want to try starting off with a load size you like (.1 might be a good start) and keep experimenting with the same material, roasting tube and weight until you get the desired affect..

Dave gave the following voltage guidelines when using a VVPS. I found it on page 224 of this thread.

11.00v-12.50v = normal operation
12.50v-13.00v = hot operation
13.00v-13.75v = very hot operation
13.75v-14.5v = boosting (Less than five minutes)
14.50v+ = rapidly damaging to piece, risk of fire

Hope this helps.

Hehe ok that sounds better, you had me worried there for a minute. Sounds like you're using it just as intended.

So, as some of you have noticed, as of last night we're including a small VVPS and cable (free of charge) with each UD other than the least expensive of the Lost Dogs. For those Lost Dogs it'll be offered as a $10 upgrade option. People who don't want a VVPS will be able to choose to take a standard wall wart instead. This choice is in a drop-down box on each vapes page and making the selection part of the process of adding the Pup to your cart. Easy as pie.

Dave, I've never used a VVPS. To be honest, I don't like clutter and have never really felt the need to run my dog any hotter or cooler. Am I missing out on something with the VVPS?

:peace:

How much for the vvps for existing dog owners? I noticed the vvps wasnt listed on the website.

I can definitely chime in on this.

As long as you're able to get as dark of ABV as you want with the wall wart PLUS have other vaporizers to get a low temp vapor experience, then you're pretty set.

Today I've been using the underdog all day with the wall wart and am getting a dark ABV. Great success!
The VVPS is nice but I don't always use it to minimize wear & tear.

So, as some of you have noticed, as of last night we're including a small VVPS and cable
When the power supply has been on for a few hours, does it get hot to the touch? :buzz:

Awesome that the VVPS is being offered with the Dogs! Definitely adds versatility to the Dog, though I don't use mine nearly enough.

Why don't I always use mine? With my screen VERY close to the heat port, I get VERY dark (basically black, but not charred) AVB. Which is what I like. I like to know that I am roasting all the goodies out without setting anything on fire.

I got a VVPS and cord from Dave a couple months ago. The cord is very well made and the VVPS is a neat little device. I have not experimented with lower temperature roasting yet.

The downsides of the VVPS over the wall-wart? The VVPS uses more energy (due to heat and lights). Don't know how much more (maybe someone with one of those "test your appliances energy draw" plugs could do some research). The VVPS makes a annoying humming/static/squeal noise which seems to increase in volume and pitch with an increase in voltage. The VVPS gets hotter than the wall-wart. The VVPS is bright. I love that my Underdog looks like a wood sculpture on my dresser or desk. No lights or logos and neon potleafs. The VVPS adds a more technical/digital look to the package and is definitely not as stealth.

Benefits are somewhat obvious. Temp/voltage control. Ability to put less strain on the dog during "downtime." Ability to prolong the life of diffuser oil (with lower voltage). Ability to use high temps for desired effect or concentrates or whatever.

Best option? Damn, I think you need to get both! I run my Dog mostly on the wall-wart, but definitely like options and the ability to tinker.

EDIT: And on the discussion of Underdog electrical supply, I could definitely use an extension cord. 6 feet is more than enough for my personal use, but another 10 feet would be awesome when passing the Dog down the couch or to the person in the rocking chair.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you guys.. it's always a madhouse around here the day or two after a refresh lol. Taking a quick breather now though and will answer a few posts:

:peace:

In your case Stu if you don't feel the need to adjust your temp up or down there's no real functional need for a VVPS. I of course have a vested interest (reduced warranty support) in as many users as possible using a VVPS if they use how I would like them to, ie standby voltage when not in use and using the lowest possible temp to get the results they want. So in your case you're getting better convenience and less clutter for the possible trade off of having a Pup need service, or need it sooner. :2c:

How much for the vvps for existing dog owners? I noticed the vvps wasnt listed on the website.

I haven't really figured out how to address all the difference aspects of this whole VVPS thing yet but the VVPSs are costing me $20/ea (incl the cable) so a break-even point for me (incl Priority shipping) would be like $25.

...When the power supply has been on for a few hours, does it get hot to the touch? :buzz:

Yeah they get pretty warm, the aluminum case makes for a good heat sink which is probably good since these don't use fans for cooling.

Not sure if or how much more power the VVPS uses but I can test that easy enough, if I can remember. Better write down lol.

So far I haven't noticed these ones making any of those static noises you mentioned so hopefully they don't. The one I sent you was a super-cheapy from ebay vs these ones I ordered which are supposed to be of higher quality. Both are from China of course but I found the vendor who makes them and ordered a couple thousand dollars worth directly. With goods from China the vendors usually build two variants, one aiming for the lowest possible price (the cheap variant) and the other aimed at a higher quality for picky customers. In this case that means a $5 model and a $15 model. I chose the $15 variant so hopefully I got what I paid for. Only time will tell I suppose. :worms:

I do think we'll be changing the options so that people can get both if they want, gotta crunch the numbers and see how to do it on the website first though.

Extension cord? >>> http://www.underdogvapes.com/accessories/electrical/extension-cord/ :brow:

I think yours was actually the first order to go through after we added the option. If you still have your order confirmation you can look at the options and see where you selected 'Standard Wall Wart'. I did get a couple confused emails though so I think some people (maybe you too?) either missed the option and answered on auto-pilot or just didn't know what to make of it and chose one randomly. :uhoh: You did get a haiku though and not everyone gets one of those.. :)

Ahhh, I see the choice on my order confirmation. I'll see how things go with the standard plug and pick up the VVPS once you begin to offer it as a standalone accessory.

You can see what time I placed my order, I should have had my coffee first.

Hooray! I just ordered my first Underdog today, the Rustic Maple. I've been watching and waiting for weeks to make this purchase, and am so freakin' excited to join the UD club! lol. After reading so many awesome things about these guys, I can't wait to take her on her maiden voyage. :D

Very awesome to hear that the new ones are higher quality.

I'm definitely gonna get an extension cord in my next order. I was trying to give the advice that, for a little more money, prospective Dog owners may want to think about getting two power sources from you as well as a long cord.

Forgot to mention the sweet refresh! Some very beautiful woods and sweet lines

Hehe that's what I figured.. I was just taking the opportunity to give you a hard time.. ;)

I am finding after going through a bunch of these VVPS that some of them do indeed have a whine to them, guess that's not limited to the cheapies then. Good old inexpensive coils or VRM in there I guess.

Alright Dogs, all orders are now shipped.. lots of Pups on their way to new homes. Now I've gotta split and get back to work, already working on the next refresh. :peace:

It's my birthday today and I've been looking for a UD as a late present to myself... how detailed will you carve one of those pups? Have anything made out of willow?

Sounds like a good birthday present but no carving (not a skill I have) just turning on the lathe. Also haven't come across any willow in recent times, it's probably too soft anyways unfortunately. :(

I can confirm my 9month old Hilbrandt Spartan makes zero noise at the highest voltages. It is a pricey bastard though.

But are'nt the Hilbrandts notorious for being too hot to the touch? I wonder how hot the little vvps get, the ones UD is now offering .
