Over the falls, in a barrel
Steven Wilson's new album came out two weeks ago. After over two decades, he still does not disappoint. This is the guy behind the recent official surround sound remixes of King Crimson, Jethro Tull, ELP, and Caravan. For his latest work, he chose to record everything live in studio as a band, which he had never done before. To help him accomplish this with the sound he wanted, he successfully hired Alan Parsons to work as recording engineer, which Parsons hadn't done since moving toward writing, production, and performance in the mid 70s. The band that Steven Wilson put together to play his music is made up of stellar musicians, including keyboardist Adam Holzman who toured as part of Miles Davis's band in the 80s.

The result is stunning. I want to share a few songs here, but I strongly, emphatically recommend checking out the whole album, start to finish. It also really shines if you give it the benefit of a pure sound format, great speakers, and surround sound if you have it. The experience is rewarding. SW sold me on the amazing art that is audio production.

The album is presented as a collection of six short stories involving ghosts, in the tradition of early 19th century literature which employed ghosts as a metaphor for the potent combination of human regret and mortality, in other words using ghosts as a literary device to highlight emotion rather than as a spooky scare tactic.

I could write about this guy's music for hours, really… I'll spare everyone that and just say thank you for the indulgence if you read this far, and enjoy the music!

Check this out for something quiet and powerful:

And this for something with more energy!

oddball musician
Faxed Head. about as ghetto as you can get, with some genuinely masterful production.
This is all a joke, obvously, but there is some serious talent behind the album.
