Adobewan's is definitely the best looking entry on this thread but i wonder how the glass would hold up. If its gonna break it is gonna break right below the 2nd plastic piece right before the GonG piece. That is a tension or "break" point. The design should work great as long as you make the glass ticker, or could extend the plastic pieces where they connect to the glass


I was just look at adobewan's picture and i cant figure out how you would disconnect the gong piece from the ascent and how hard or easy it would be.... i think about everything

Also how secure is it when it is attached

I think my design would circumvent some of these concerns.

The connections could be an issue but some Keck clips would solve that.

Could we know more about the oven area? Maybe it would make more sense to make a glass crucible for oils that would go in the oven and allow the ascent to be used upside down. Then a very simple straight tube with your choice of GonG size end would do the job. I think that would work best!

Firstly I know that this design does not meet the given guidelines, due to the unit operating upside down. As personally I would not be using it for oils, and it would operate fine upside down, I couldn't help but submit this design.

I think it's a good solution because it covers all the important areas to bring something to market:

1. Simple to manufacture
2. Inexpensive
3. Easy to use
4. Attractive
5. Small and portable
6. Most importantly, strong!

The design consists of two pieces, the stem and the plastic housing. The stem could be available is different size fittings to fit all water pipes. It it then inserted through the top of the plastic housing, where a press fit would hold it in place. The stem has a wider, thicker diameter at the top where it presses into the plastic housing, greatly increasing its strength.

The purpose of the housing is to divert the stress away from the relatively fragile downstem. It is a hollow, injection-molded plastic shell. (simple and cheap to manufacture) This fits snugly inside of the oval at the top of the vaporizer. Now when a force is applied to the stem fitting, the body of the Ascent takes the load instead of the downstem. I know I didn't do a great job depicting what the housing looks like, but hopefully you get the picture!

I may submit another design later that meet's all the specs of the contest.

I think we can all agree the best adapter for flower use is just a short straight stem with a gong joint. This would be the cheapest to produce and the most effective (short, direct airpath = less condensation). However the contest called for something that allows the ascent to be used upright, so here's my idea. Just a quick mockup, so not very polished.

The mouthpiece would be angled ~45* and have a spherical shape on the end. The bong piece would accomodate the spherical shape and create an air tight seal. The spherical shape also means the ascent could be held at a variety of angles. While the inspiration came from the LSV, the joints do not necessarily have to be ground (smooth glass would work just fine).

Pros:
  • Very little stress is placed on the glass, since the ascent is held in one hand
  • Easy to clear
  • Durable
  • Simple to produce (you could even possibly contract 7th floor)
  • Can be used with any female-jointed water pipe
Cons:
  • Two-piece system means it's easier to lose something

I can't draw for shit. Here's my concept anyway.

It consists of a teflon clamp that would slide down into a channel on the side of the main body where the bowl hinge is. It would stop short of the bowl to allow free bowl rotation while connected. As you can see from the cross section, the clamp would essentially function like a super-long keck clip. The side tube would snap in and be held very securely.

Downside is that my preferred method of attaching the clamp calls for a channel to be cut in the side of the body to grip the base of the clamp. If this isn't possible, then a one-piece contraption with two bands that slide down over the body would also work.

Although the tube could be a one-piece U, I think that would be relatively expensive to make with the close tolerances required, so I've split it into two with a connection to the side of the mouthpiece. It should be cheaper to make and replace the individual parts, and there shouldn't be a need for a keck clip at the connection since the side clamp and the internal silicone will both be gripping all along the length of both tubes.

Having two parts to the tube would also make storage more convenient and breakage less likely. Also, for those using flowers, you could do hits while holding on to the Ascent sideways and it would be more compact. Lift to clear and place Ascent on table instead of back into bubbler stem.

Adding only about 3/4 in to the dimensions of one side and keeping within the Ascent's form factor with a super secure clamp would allow the Ascent with gong attachment to be pocketed without fear of breakage. (The 14mm male joint at the bottom is a little further out than I should have drawn it. I see it sticking out only slightly to keep within the overall dimensions of the Ascent. Told you I couldn't draw for shit!)

Think this addresses some of the insightful concerns mentioned.
Sturdier glass tube encased in a plastic collar, adjustable GonG length, Ascent docking and mouthpiece mating clarified.

Great work again! The only potential issue I see with this design is that a lot of stress is placed on the glass tube, particularly from the top of the joint to the bottom bridge. That could be minimized by placing the joint closer to the bridge.

What program did you make these with?

heres my first idea, simple but practical. (not sure if flexible glass is even available yet but....) if not use a medical grade, odorless/tasteless silicon hose.

This is a side view of the ascent.
The black part is glass. GonG male connector on the bottom to fit a bong. On top a small GonG male connector to fit the top part.
The green part is a (plastic?) holder that is attached to the male GonG. The ascent sits in the top of the holder. So the wheight of the Ascent is held by the holder and the fat part of the male GonG.

This glass part fits both the Ascent on one side and the bottom glass part on the other side with a small female GonG connection.

The only potential issue I see with this design is that a lot of stress is placed on the glass tube, particularly from the top of the joint to the bottom bridge. That could be minimized by placing the joint closer to the bridge.

I think this may cover the stress issue on the stem.

Considering how great all the entries have been so far, I can't imagine the Ascent not eventually getting an amazing GonG adapter. Thanks to DV for offering such a nifty contest and good luck to all, I hope to be vaping with one of your submissions on my ascent one day :rockon:

Nice design! Like it allot. Only one concern; is the glass all in one piece?

If so installing it would be a PITA I think. First you click the unit on the tube (which requires horizontal movement of the unit) or you slide the glass piece into place (requiring vertical movement) either way it seems difficult to make both movements without breaking the stem in the unit.

But that's a problem for their design team (O wait that's us! ;-))

Edit; also have a look at that e-mail adres again, mine made it trough.

I think I may have made the clips a bit too long around in the drawing. It is meant to slide in and out vertically. One piece of glass is always much stronger than having joints IME. Although a horizontal clip in would be more secure because you could have more contouring clips, it's just not possible for a one piece stem. The clips should be just long enough to around the stem to provide some support, but also short enough to bend slightly around the angled glass on the way in. Thanks for the love Jeff ! 3 Views of my Water Adapter for the Ascent:
The idea of the contraption fits perfectly with the looks of the Ascent. The ascent looks similar to a Cell Phone IMO, so why not give it a "case"? The case connects to an all-glass tube/14 or 18mm GG adapter, which also fits with the all-glass vapor path of the ascent. The tube will have ideally 5-9mm glass to ensure stability. The tube is all one piece and contains either plastic or metal strips that connect the glass tube to the case. The strips that connect the glass to the case will be held together by clips that can be removed. The The tube goes down into the ascent to the heating mechanism, and since it is one-piece, there needs to be a hinge at the bottom of the case to allow for the ascent to safely slide out of the adapter.

Hopefully it is legible and easy to understand, if it's not just let me know and I'll figure out a way to clear anything up. :) Thanks for this contest/opportunity DaVinci!

Heres another basic idea that seems practical,(not new to the world) just modified for the ascent. A "remove after every hit" oval type water device that stands upright when removed. even if I dont win, this contest is getting my creative juices flowin, so i feel like im already a winner =) thanks for the contest! =)

Since some of you guys have taken the design phase of this contest to the freak zone, I decided I needed to submit a working prototype. After several days in my workshop I have some sweet accessories. The first one is for flowers...nailed it!




I got one for concentrates as well!

I like this one the most but i feel with the ascent hanging to the side of the gong the glass will break... what i right before the gong piece you curved the glass back under the ascent. In which case the ascent is directly over the bowl. I understand the need for air flow but i think if any one can make it happen visually.... its @adobewan... make me proud with a modification to your idea.... im on my phone so i cant put a picture

This is my Video Entry, rules didn't say anything about having to draw the design. So I shall explain mine with my hands, Italians are good at that sort of thing. I labeled this Design #1 because I have a few more ideas up my sleeve. Although there are multiple parts, I tried to tackle every problem I could possibly think of.

EDIT!!

It didn't really occur to me that tube #2 (in my design) looks practically impossible to fit into that position, since glass does't bend; fortunately I remembered the bottom of the vape swivels out :razz:, which would provide perfect coverage for placing the Ascent how I have the tube designed. How Fortunate!! I just wanted to get that out before it raises any concern.

Also after watching DV's new review it seems there isn't much room to make the tube much wider right as it leaves the hole, so scratch the part where I wrote the thicker part of the vape should be flush with the base of the mouthpiece, Instead it shouldn't widen until the tube exits the the walls of the mouthpiece, which just gives even more reason to have a sleeve over the top to make sure it can't break.
