Tek ABV Concentrate experiment: What method is best?

my brains in a bit of a fog at the moment and im unsure why i would need to filter the product a second time there shouldnt be any particulates left after i run the bho though the abv in the first place. i am considering adding most of the oil into some brownies but since im just making edibles would all these purification steps be overkill?

Butane has a different polarity than ethanol. Butane pulls out the cannabinoids but also a small amount of naturally-occurring plant waxes. Ethanol pulls the cannabinoids but can't take the leftover plant waxes, which is why it's filtered a second time. If you're planning on eating it, winterization probably won't have much noticeable benefit? I'd spring for it if I were to make a run of oil to pass on to other people.

I found these on the interwebs

Think I'm gonna try what that guy's doing

P.S.: Why is it called winterize? [I'm German I don't get it]

Got to read that topic. I have a bunch of vaped herbs and some are already soaked in 95% grain alcohol.
I may pull the trigger on some titanium so I have to get into making wax.

I has boiled the herbs before putting them in the alcohol. I will simply extract a bit of the liquid in my jars with a small syringe, lightly stuffed with cotton to filter plant matter, then pour it on a flat glass surface, placing it under my IR lamp, windows open. I will do micro amounts to avoid concentration of toxic evaporates. Scraping it with a razor blade after it has dried. Ghetto old school.

I really don't want to get into butane extraction :/ The stuff and weird odors you talk about are a turn off. I have some quality butane but I don't have the accessories to extract properly

Weird odors are the result of using impure butane. I ONLY use Vector 5x Refined in my BHO runs and my torch. I was also kind apprehensive about messing around with butane, but once you've done the process one time, it becomes a whole lot easier. The biggest danger is proper ventilation... I go to the table in the backyard and do fine.

Congrats on using 70% butane 18% propane Vector is Overpriced and Overrated. Look up your MSDS people.
propane has a higher vapor point meaning it is harder to evaporate out and Cannabinoids are less soluble in propane. Do yourself a favor switch to Burnzomatic(35% N-Butane and 65% isobutanes) or comparative butane.

It's actually apparently 11% propane. Congrats on reading the MSDS. Propane is the propellant.

Butane's boiling point: 30.2°F (-1°C)
Propane's boiling point: -43.6°F (-42°C)

Having two different solvents working to extract at the same time would actually be more beneficial, no? Please don't tell me you believe that butane extracts EVERYTHING out of it? The quality of your end-product will suffer if you try to run butane through it until you get all the cannabinoids up...

both propane and butane extract with the same structure in the molecule but butane has more Hydrogen bonding sites. forgive me for miss quoting the MSDS ratio i was operating on memory probably shouldn't do that while medicated. The ideal hydrocarbon chain similar to butane/ propane is hexane though it is liquid at room temp.

I wish I had found this thread earlier. I have some ABV that has been soaking in ISO for about 24 hours. I was about to strain and start to evaporate - am I way off? Or should I throw it in the freezer overnight?

I hope you're going to cook with that oil. That's a long soak for iso; even with winterization.

Really? I am getting too old for this shit - I have a ton of abv and have never tried a concentrate. I thought you soak in ISO for 24 hrs, strain - evaporate - scrape and smoke. How badly am I doing?

That's like 23 hours 59 minutes and 30 seconds too long.

Edit: Iso washes must be kept under 30 seconds or else too much other stuff is extracted from the plant. You can cook with that oil though! Makes caps or even turn it into a tincture. That batch will not go to waste. I've only made ABV qwiso once and it was my first time trying qwiso. Personally I'd try the mason jar bho method, I'm going to start doing that for my once ran bud and abv. I can teach you how to make some good qwiso, as can others. I learned a lot of what I know from FC.

i just posted these 2 QWISO videos last week from youtube.. this is my favorite way... maybe try it another time.. the BHO mason jar method would probably turn out better though...

cool.. i'll look out for those pics.. iv'e been wanting to try that since i notice this thread.. i always end up eating my ABV though

Hi love this thread. Before attempting any of these methods. I was wondering something. And my question are these methods better for getting the good stuff seperated from the bad stuff better in potency and efficient extraction compared to the popular general common ways of just using the ABV to make canna oil/canna butter, for edibles. Like is it better to use these methods to extract what we want or better to not use these methods and use the common youtube methods of extracting into something like you do when making edibles.

If edibles is as potent as it can ever get then I would want to do this method, with the stems and leaves from my crops added with ABV stuff I get from my HA 2.2.

Just like link above.

I was going to use bubble bags to make bubble hash and then use your method to get abv reused. And then combine the two and then make pollen pellets to vape or add to make canna butter, but would I lose any potency if I just skipped your steps and the bubble hash making steps. And if I used used the youtube linked. With abv and stems?

I don't think bubble bags would work that well at extracting ABV. If you've ever seen macro pictures of ABV you likely noticed most of the trichomes had melted/evaporated off. Trichomes are what bubble bags collect, so if you tried running ABV your return would be minimal at best. Depending how much ABV you have and what you want to do it, a QWISO extraction might be your best bet. If you have less than 2 or so ounces of ABV, I would just turn it directly into oil/butter, unless you need edibles that are super concentrated. A QWISO extraction isn't difficult, especially with ABV, but it's an extra step that generally takes at least a couple hours.

I think the best you can do with ABV to "purify" it would be a water-cure on it (in a permeable container like a tied-up coffee filter?) to remove any excess chlorophyll. The cannabinoids are barely water-soluble so any loss to the water would be negligible. Hell, I just mix my ABV with Nutella or yogurt and eat it real quick...

I'm gunna make an RSO with my mass amounts of ABV. Hope fully it works out. Testing out eating vaped oil tonight by eating some solo stem oil. I will report back!

Hey shred how are you extracting for the RSO are you using ricks method of iso and cooking it with the material for a long extraction? In my humble opinion if that's the method you are using even with fresh material the plant matter and clorophyl were a bit overpowering and upset my stomach in larger doses. I would do a qwiso or bho run or something on it then cap it or whatever your plans are. If it was me I would use some a small amount of coco oil and soy lech for maximum effect and absorption :2c:

Whatever your plans good luck shred and let us know how it turns out.

I'm planning on doin a decently long wash ,but not to long, maybe a vigorous shake for a min. Then I'm just gunna purge off like normal in my Pyrex. Purge for a day or 2 and add a drop or 2 of water. Then scrape up and either cap it or just put a ball into a zig zag and take it like a pill. We will see what happens. I'm just tired of tasting the nasty!

I guess it's all decarbed so it wouldn't really matter, but mixing it into something might help the taste some? Even just the basic nutella suggestion sounds more appetizing than just downing a paper of qwiso lol. I'd suggest some whole fat ice cream, with some hot fudge. Heat up the fudge, then before you pour it over just drop the hash in, stir, then eat as normal. Toppings as necessary to help taste of course. Maybe some real whipped cream, to help digestion ;).

.. Now I'm hungry.

The way I mean is like taking a pill. No taste involved! The solo oil gave me a nice mellow high all night. Feelin good. I just need a strong edible to be able to take quickly and discreetly. Looking for something to bring along on the road.

Well All I know is I have four sources of reclaim, the ABV is one, the stuff I want to get out of the leaves stems and stuff, and the whip, and from the inside walls of a bong. I really just want something that can work for all those things, and that is most of all easy, and efficient.
