So how long do you keep your vapor in?

How long do you hold in your vapor?

I think the main problem here is ultimately lack of proper scientific study,

Everybody has their own theorys, the lungs only absorb when expanding, the thc is instantly absorbed, the thc takes 10 seconds to fully absorb etc etc, but I have yet to find a reputable source or any real evidence besides word of mouth. I suppose all you can do is what works for you..

So true! Hopefully the new laws in CO and WA will help with this in the future.

Even though this can be borderline superstitious, I have heard of people vaping upside down in the hope that the vapor actually rises into the lungs. Headstand sesh anyone?

Actually there are studies of THC absorption, not many, especially when you go to studies on vaporizing only. And most concentrate on THC when there are other cannabinoids who are equally important.

Just search around, in FC there are other threads about this that have more scientific examples and less word of mouth. But, after a while, these topic comes up again and , speaking for myself, i don't remember where i put the studies and i won't do the research everytime someone asks the same question. Instead, i just report what i recall from those previous researches. I'm sure others here do the same.

EDIT: could not help myself, here is a nice little study to the ones interested in some science reading -> http://www.maps.org/mmj/vaporizerstudy4.15.03.pdf :science:

I usually hold my hit in for a total of ten seconds after finishing my last bit of inhale. I've gotten into the habit of making a fist and releasing each of my 5 fingers a second apart and then balling each finger back in to my fist for a total of 10 seconds(this is a method I picked up watching BigDaddyVapor's vape vids, thanks guy!). Only time I time my inhale is when I make a video & then I take notice of the timer on my camera. I've noted my typical inhale time is roughly 40seconds. So in total my hits generally take about 1 minute each(give or take a few seconds).

I think the key is how much vapor you're inhaling. Take a huge water filtered hit that you couldn't hold for 10 sec. if you tried, and IMO there's no way your body can absorb all the cannabinoids in 2-3 seconds. Plenty of people have gotten high from 2nd hand smoke and vapor, when exhaled into a bag. I've done my own admittedly non scientific testing, and my belief is that manageable hits you can comfortably for about 10 sec. is the way to go. The nice thing about vapor is that it's easier and safer to hold than smoke.

I'd love to see a good study or three on the difference in absorbtion time between smoke and vapor.

I normally draw on my water piece for 15ish seconds (I've never timed it - I go by the thickness of the vapor within my piece), clear the piece, and then inhale fresh air until my lungs are full.

If my hit was too big I'll usually blow it out straight away (pretty much involuntarily).

If not, sometimes (usually a smaller hit) I hold it for another 10-15 seconds, then gently exhale the whole hit (by gentle, I mean the vapor basically drifts out of my mouth, I'm not "blowing" it out)

The rest of the time, I still inhale the same, fill my lungs with fresh air, hold for 10-15 seconds and then I exhale until I see a little bit of vapor come out, then breathe in until my lungs are full again, hold for 4-5 seconds, and repeat. I can ghost pretty big hits with that technique (ok, technically it's not ghosting the hit since there's a little bit of visible exhale, but its a pretty negligible amount)

A good read amidst some gobbledey-gook, atleast some studies are being done.

Oh my WW came btw :D

No stash to properly try it out but I managed to get slightly medicated from a mere flake I found on the carpet with it! Looks like I will be keeping it as my primary and using buddha as a heavy hitter, might even quit combustion if all goes well.

I really want a GoG bong/bubbler to use on it.. Not an expensive one just a cheap functioning one but they aren't easy for me to find.

I heard that the actual chemical reaction happens in a about 3/100ths of a second. This doesn't include the time that it takes for the vapor in the in middle of your lungs to reach the walls, which I found is only however long it takes for you to take a few puffs of air. In all my years of vaping and combusting I've never seen a difference holding it in any longer then that, unless you count lack of oxygen that is. The only reason that vaping might take a little longer is because it's less exothermic.

A good way of testing would perhaps be to blow out the vapor into a bag and let a friend who is not grossed out by shit like that breathe it in. If he gets fucked the vapor is still active.

Pardon my french today

I usually do 5-10 seconds per hit. Sometimes I would hold in a hit then exhale everything out and inhale fresh vapor then hold in it instead of breathing in between. I get pretty lit doing that haha

Hehe I do this with dabs or oil too. Take a dab then an ssv hit.

Hard mode: do a dab then "chase it down" with a vapor rip all on the same hit it's like a canna-strikeout :ko:

I forget the exact percentage but its somewhere around 95% of the thc is absorbed in the first 3 seconds. By holding it in longer, you are only getting that last 5%. However the per second trade off to me is not worth it. Plus, the real reason you feel a lot higher holding it in as long as possible is because of the added effect of oxygen deprivation. Basically, hold it in for at least 3, and then exhale. Any more is just silly

I tend to do this exact thing when I'm vaping with a bag vaporizer. Makes the session pass a little quicker when I'm in a rush.

I have no clue about the %, but I honestly doubt oxygen deprivation affects the high at all after a mere 3 seconds, or even 10. I can hold my breath for 30 second before I feel any of that. Not saying I know much about it just my experience.

Personally, I hold my hits anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds. I feel like I dont waste much and I usually blow out small clouds or no clouds. Huge cloud once in a while. But to me it just feels so good holding a lungful of sweet vapor in.

I retain the vapor for 5 - 10 seconds usually. Less so if it's a lung buster. :ko:

I would say it depends on the hit, the piece, and of course the density of the vapor. I can draw of the cloud (through water)for about 10 to 15 seconds. As far as holding it I don't think I could pass the 5 second mark. What I also find is when drawing off of a hydra-tube as opposed to a bong where I have to clear the actual piece I find it much more difficult to hold HT hits in.

I hope you guys could follow me - kind of vaped as I am typing.

3 to 12 seconds. Some times I feel like holding up to 20-30 seconds but that's not an habit.
I never hold it all, I keep breathing on a fraction of my lung capacity. I rarely exhales all in once, as it is harsh. That is the most natural and pleasant method I have found, no oxygen deprivation equals better overall absorption. I will develop on this on my future publication.

I hold it in until very little visible vapor exists, in what I call the Stoners' Wager: If it doesn't hurt or inconvenience me to hold it in until it's fully absorbed, then the question of whether or not it's required becomes irrelevant.

It doesn't hurt me in any way. I'm pretty healthy and active, so by virtue of that I can hold in a hit for as long as needed with no special effort on my part. I would notice any lung or other health impairment, but there is none.

To minimize the inconvenience by expediting the process I recommend grinding the material very finely, preheating it on models which allow this, taking the biggest hits you can handle to vaporize the material more quickly, and as others have mentioned, inhaling a good bit of regular air after your hit to push the vapor further into your lungs.

This extra air serves a dual purpose for those really massive milky hits which would otherwise take forever to absorb if simply held in. It allows me to take rapid, shallow breaths of nothing but air to help agitate the vapor further down, which drastically increases its absorption rate. Obviously, this would quickly get you ostracized in company, so it's only something to do if you're alone (and nuts).

Using this method, and a plug-in model capable of producing very thick vapor, I can cash a bowl in effectively two hits with a combined 90 seconds or so of holding in vapor. That's not counting ten minutes of preheating, but it's still pretty close to the quickness and ease of combustion, which is frankly the only thing I miss about it.

I honestly don't think about how long I keep a hit in. There's never a doubt that I'll walk away from a session satisfied, given the strains and quantities I typically ingest.

These days I try to treat my cannabis the way connoisseurs treat fine wine. You won't catch them sitting around talking about how to get bombed off of that fancy cabernet.

I hold my hits in as long as I can, I've noticed I get significantly higher the longer I hold my hits in. Most of the time I never see vapor being exhaled because of how long I hold in my hit but I always do like a quick "test" puff to make sure I'm getting big clouds.

It's a very useful technique to have when your vaping in public places like a movie theater. :D

Do you notice a harder comedown with large absorption all at once compared to spacing it out a bit more even in the same session. I notice sometimes it seems like when I go over board with rebreathing and such it seems I can get a harder comedown later. Normally a headache and a bit lethargic til I vape again. So if I do something similar to your technique it's my night time sessions. I think by vaping the load rapidly at high temperature you are degrading some cannabinoids into more sedative CBD/CBN which is why I prefer this at night time for more pain relief and help sleeping. Which may actually be giving me the side effects described earlier, more testing needing I guess

I think so too.. it seems more likely that due to high temps, some THC degrades into sedative cannabinoids. I notice a similar difference when i increment my vaping temps vs starting high.

Holding your hits or rebreathing shouldn't do this in theory.. rebreathing just allows for more oxigen to enter the lungs and absorb the remaining cannabinoids. And the remaining cannabinoids waiting to be absorbed are not necessarily sedative ones, i think.

Generally I'll hold it in for two to three seconds, any more provides a scratchy throat feeling sometimes depending on quality of herb and how long youve been seshing for and how big hits you've been taking etcetera... I dnt find a difference holding it longer and I find it just irritates my throat
