I am looking at the Wispr and heard from someone about them exploding. I'd this true? Anyone heard this?

Anyone tried using butane that isn't "refined"? Unfortunately I couldn't find any butane around here that even has the word "refined" or "filtered" in it. They're all just generic ones for cheap lighters.

Will it likely just ruin the unit if I use those kinds of butane?

FIrst off, I am new here and just found this thread and want to post this.
I have my Wispr since January 2012. I use REFINED hygrade butane per the instructions. About 2 months ago, I noticed that after I use the Wispr, there is roughly 1/2 tank left and I click it firmly off. The next day, its EMPTY. So I fill it up, use it, click it firmly off. Same thing happens.. Now a few months later, after using and let it cool down, I refill it. Nope, the gas still leaks out. I don't hear any noise(hiss) of butane leaking. I once watched the wispr for about 10 minutes after shutting off and saw in the window the butane going down and still no hiss or red light in the window.. yes I can return the dam thing for service. 2-3 weeks, 3weeks is prob more than likely, and I have to clean it with alcohol first.. I paid $'s for it. Was the first on my block to get one...
So what gives? Any ideas from anyone? Oh, I emptied it out, refilled..did this a few times..what a waste of gas...

Haha yeah one of my old ones had this problem, i would only fill it half way with butane, use it once for about 15 ,inutes and it would be empty after...kept doing that for about a month or so and got tired and sent it back to wispr. They have upgraded the fuel tank since so this problem wont happen as often...with my replacements i get at least 2 hours of continuous use out of a full tank maybe even longer...i would definetly recommend sending it back, you wont be disappointd (except for the waiting period). If you want an extra for the meantime pm me and maybe we could work out a deal seeing as i have 2 of the upgraded units and dont need both anymore

Hi...new to the site...great info here.

I just got my Wispr. I love the way works. But I am having a technical problem. ...it wont shut off.

Even with the starter switch all the way up (no red visible) the device is still on. Last night I used it for the first time and at the end of the night it would not turn offf. Ultimately it kept running until it finally ran out of Butane.

Called customer supprt today and they blamed the butane - I used cheap Zippo butane (only filled it once since it was my first time using it), but now I switched to quadruple refined butane. But the problem still occurs.

Has anyone had similar problems? Any advice.

i have had the same turning off problem but i told them i used colibri butane (which i did). Unfortunately this is a common manufacturing defect and they do say i will have to send the vape in to get fixed. they also outlined a quick troubleshoot of refilling and filling. here is a copy of their reply for anyone who might find it useful.

Based on information you have provided, we are issuing warranty claim instructions.
Prior to shipping the vaporizer to our office, please be sure you are using a recommended brand of butane. Quality butane is critical to the overall performance of the vaporizer. We recommend the following brands: Vector, Power, Colibri, Newport, Dunhill, Xikar, and Braun. If you are not using one of these brands, please switch as this is often the cause of operating issues.
Please also be sure you have tried venting and refilling the vaporizer 3-4 times in a row. Venting can be accomplished by applying pressure to the gas valve with a ball point pen or something of similar size. Butane will be released during this process so be sure to point the spray down and away from you. Once empty, refill with recommended butane. Repeating this process 3-4 times in a row will often return the vaporizer to full operation. Do not ignite in between venting and refilling.
If you have checked the butane and tried venting and refilling 3-4 times in a row, please proceed with the following claim instructions.
Confirm original purchase date is within the last 24 months.
Ship the unit along with a copy of your sales receipt NOT the original receipt to our Manitoba office:
B.O.B Headquarters
820 Pacific Avenue
Brandon, MB
R7A 0J1
Canada
Include the following information on a standard size sheet of paper, please DO NOT use sticky notes, small notecards, etc: Complete name, return address, phone number, email address, brand of butane being used, and a description of the issue. Please be sure to include this sheet of paper along with the copy of your sales receipt inside the package. If ALL requested information is not included, claim processing will be significantly delayed and if possible returned to sender.
Drain the unit of all butane as it is illegal to ship with butane in the vaporizer. Significant processing delays will occur if vaporizers are received containing butane.
DO NOT SEND THE FILLING CHAMBER/MOUTHPIECE. SHIP ONLY THE BASE UNIT.Please do not send any of the accessories, spare parts or packaging. If the original box is shipped back with the unit, it will not be returned. Any spare parts or accessories shipped with the unit will also NOT be returned. DO NOT SHIP ANYTHING BUT THE BASE UNIT.
The unit must be completely clean and free of any debris or residue. All particles MUST be removed from the main bowl as well as the entire body of the vaporizer. Wipe the entire vaporizer down with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Please be aware that the warranty will be void should the unit be returned with debris or particle matter. Please see our complete warranty policy available at www.iolite.com.
Upon receipt and verification of warranty, a new vaporizer will be shipped. We do not repair the vaporizers. Processing time is typically 14-21 days, however will be delayed if all instructions are not followed. If our technicians do not find any manufacturing defects, processing time will also be delayed.
Please remember if you do not include contact information, we cannot contact you should we have any questions.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding this process. We can be reached toll free Monday through Friday 9-5 CST at 1-888-710-3055.

Thank you,
Iolite North America

hey all, i agree with the viprdude above. i recently bought a new wispr to use while the old one is heading to the u.s. to get replaced under warranty (thx puffitup). simply, the orange light one day never glowed again. this is my third wispr and i think this 3rd one is a tad more robust in operation. i'm guessing this one is a mark II wispr. it is a touch louder than the previous two, the outside is cooler and the sippy straw doesn't get quite as hot. it lights up easier and appears to stay operating for shorter periods. plus a bit of a giveaway, it's black!
i think this is a good rework of the original. i am a great fan of the wispr and use it more often than my other vapes and i don't mind having a spare. a little dilly bag, small can of gas (available everywhere) and the wispr and you're carrying a friend.

the others;
extreme q is old and tired, currently needs an obviously inaccurate 255c to get any visible vapour.
flight box and thermovape are dust collectors. good for some peoples uses.
life sabre is dead and sending it overseas for repair is not economically prudent. a good direct vape.
vapir 5 for me is rough as guts on my throat. i gave it away and the person who got it loves it! another vape convert.
the hi cord is getting repaired. a great little unit. great to heat a bong bowl with.
iolite in storage but ever ready.

compared to the above the wispr is my favourite vape of all. though, i do look forward to and expect great things of the australian adapted cloud when it happens.

I realise the answer to my question is here on this forum somewhere, but I'm having difficulty finding it... how do I change the mesh screen on my beautiful but now-somewhat-clogged WISPR? I've been given a small bag of intriguing metal tools, but I lack the nous to work out what to do. Or maybe it's more that I'm worried I'll wreck it somehow... Would someone mind SHHHHing me in the right direction? Cheers!

just received my replacement from Iolite...echo what others are saying - works very well, feels more robust and no issues igniting...cycles also seem to be shorter too. Previous Wispr was playing up, after a year of heavy(daily) use the ignition was becoming unreliable, but would usually eventually get going.returned it to Iolite and a new one was issued straight away..very happy with the new version - mid way through its first trial run and its licking me!

Customer Service was very good- returned the old unit to Ireland and replacement received back within a week (im in London). All dealings with them were very pleasant and friendly.

I think this is a great vape, when working well...I prefer it to my Extreme Q - the quality of vapor is much more consistent with the Wispr, and I find it more economical...I regularly use it when out and about, in central London, without much more than the occasional curious look

Keeko - I dont use the rods for cleaning that often.

i remove the filling chamber from the rubber straw/mouthpiece then use something to dislodge the C clip - usually the handle of a teaspoon. Once the C clip is loose and removed the actual screen should fall out of the chamber. if it doesnt, then use the cleaning rod with the thread on the bottom. it screws into the the bottom of the chamber and pushes the screen out. i then soak all the components of the filling chamber in Iso overnight and clean them up with a cotton bud in the morning-it comes up good as new. If its really gunked up and the screen (and/or C clip) doesnt want to dislodge, try soaking it for a few hours in Iso. this should loosen things up a bit so you can remove the parts to clean properly. I soak the rubber mouthpiece parts in warm soapy water and then clean with a pipe cleaner or cotton bud. its worth investing in some spare screens so theres always a clean one to use.

you will notice a big difference once cleaned - it works MUCH better. :D

WISPR since 12/10/2011
I wish to update the forum about my latest Wispr adventures!

I have begun to use the 2nd replacement unit more than the other unit.

Huge difference in temps and a lot of fruitless clicking coming from my older model. Something the new replacement just does not give me troubles with, also burns at a lower temperature which I can only confirm by blowing the exhaled vape under a bright lumen flashlight to view the color of the vapor exhaled.

Sometimes, with my 2nd blue unit I have had to click the starter 60-80 times to get it to fire up. I have had it empty and have not used it in weeks. I just put in a little bit of fuel, primed it for ten seconds and first click, it ignited. It got very hot compared to my replacement unit for my green first and original purchase of a Wispr.

WISPR since 12/10/2011
Minor update: I contacted Iolite Customer Service on Monday and they responded with an issuance of a warranty claim for my 2nd unit. Off to the doctor my blue Wispr shall go! I hope it passes the warranty inspection and I am issued a replacement unit. I will send it off next week at the latest and update accordingly.

Having used an Iolite Wispr heavily (2-3 times a day) I am very happy with the unit when it works. I have no complaints that are really worth mentioning. I have only purchased four or five cans of butane @ ~ $12 a can. It works well and it is simple to maintain. Keeping on top of cleaning is paramount. I also recommend ordering parts for replacement to increase the cleaning intervals. I have three filling chambers I rotate usage out of and then I will have a cleaning session with some rubbing alcohol. The portability is great. Being reliant on butane makes it at least 100 times faster to "recharge" (5 mins to allow the butane to adjust to room temperature is recommended!) than a battery powered unit.

If anyone has any questions or has been searching for a new portable vaporizer to use, I cannot say enough good words about this unit. Here is a video I made about the product.

I got an email today from Iolite Customer Service that they approved my warranty request. Then when I got home it was sitting on my porch!
Ripped it open to find a nice new pumpkin.

The butane gauge is super cloudy now. I guess that supposed to help you see the fuel level easier.
Now I have mouth 3 pieces!

@Ratm22, did they send you the email approving the request and then sent you a new replacement before you sent out the broke model you had? So they sent you a new one already and they are waiting to receive your broken unit? I hope that clarifies what I am asking. My first "warranty" Wispr that I received also had the "cloudy" fuel gauge level window.

No if you look back a few pages I mailed it Sep 5, 2012.
I never heard anything for 3 months, until today when the unit was sitting on my porch. Their automatic emails must be messed up.

Okay so the replacement is a bit different. First impressions:
I do not like the cloudy fuel window. It is way harder to see the level than the clear one.
The heat cycle seems to be snappier.
Gas activation more responsive.
Still the same temperature.
No more rattling sound!

Back to back post please merge

mod note: Done!

I've just made my faulty wispr work again by taking it apart and cleaning it. Had it for about a year, and gradually it's been acting up lately. I'd have to click several times to light it, and then a few days ago it just stopped heating all together. You could hear the gas flow, but the spark wouldn't light it.

It's a bit nervewrecking opening it the first time, but it's quite easy with a knife and a screwdriver (saw a guide on youtube). Looking up in the heating mechanism from below i could see a bit of dirt or dust. Removed it with a pin and a good old nintendo blow, now my wispr turns on in one click like when i bougt it. Must have been blocking the flow of gas.

Also stretched the springs in there a bit. Lighting mechanism became crisper and the gas shuts off properly again.

So there's hope for a faulty wispr if you've run into the same problems as me. One warning though: Small mechanical bits that need to be put together properly. Study it well before prying apart and cleaning.

This got my broken wispr back up and running again. Took about 5 minutes and a can of compressed air

Thank You!

I have owned a couple iOlites since I first saw them advertised. Had some great luck, other units bad luck. My very first iOlite took a crap after about a year of solid service. I also happened to take this thing on major roller coasters and I am not sure if maybe the wind rushing them though messed up the internals.

I bought another iOlite and it is still in use to this date. It has lasted about two years now, and I believe the major factor is the type of butane I'm working with.

I use stuff called Ultratane from Master Appliances. It is made specially for expensive gas powered tools, and I notice that my iOlites give a nice hissing, more like roaring noise when they are fed this butane. I had to order it off of Amazon, I think i got like 4 big bottles for 25$ shipped. There was also no hazardous shipping charge or anything like that.

When I heard that there was a new iOlite coming out, I had to have it. Picked up an espresso brown Wispr about 6 months after they first came out. I think it's definitely an improved design, although it's not as friendly in the hand as the original iOlite. The original iOlite could not stand up, and this one can, so that's a plus. I also like how the mouthpiece isn't just a straight pole. The ability to tuck the straw in is definitely nice, and it almost kinda kinks the hose so that no vapors escape.

My brown Wispr died about 3 months after I purchased it from GotVape. I called them up and explained what happened and they promptly sent me a new unit, only this time I got it in black. Black was not available when they first released the Wispr, and many people desired the black colour, they thought it was stealthier.

To make a long story short, the common thread in all of my iOlites breaking is that they were fueled with Vector brand butane. I think Vector gets too much credit for being a good butane. It's not bad stuff by any means, but I believe there are better alternatives out there. Check out Master Appliance Ultratane.

Every one of my Oglesby and Butler devices (Wispr and iOlite) that has been fed Ultratane is still in service today. The devices I owned that did not recieve Ultratane, rather Vector brand, all died on me.

I dropped by the O&B booth at the CES show in Vegas over the weekend. I had the pleasure of meeting the senior Mr. Ogelsby (very nice gentleman btw) and talked a little about vapes with him and his daughter.

He mentioned that the Wispr 2 would be his next release and that the biggest difference vis á vis the original Wispr is that it would run a bit hotter.

He gave me a 20% off discount code that I'd thought I'd share with anyone interested in buying an iolite or wispr. Code: CES20 is good until January 31.

:peace:

Hey Guys,

I've had my WISPR for just over 1 month and I'm experiencing the butane sputtering problem. I have contacted IOLITE but have not received a reply. I am hoping someone from Iolite will see this post and contact me to rectify this issue. I'm extra p****d because I over paid for my product. I paid $338 CAD from Toronto Hemp Company which is located downtown Toronto. I really don't want to be without my WISPR for the warranty claim, Iolite should send me a brand new LATEST model Wispr ASAP.

Should an Iolite employee come across this post, please contact me at dasilva.neil@gmail.com

My advise would be call iolite, i doubt theyre looking through the forumn, could be wrong who knows, but anyway ive had great experience calling them.

What is the sputtering issue your speaking of? If you mean your not getting good flow of butane to start it up it could very well be the brand of butane you are using. Have you already tried completely emptying the unit of butane and refilling it, because that usually solves the flow problem. Also make sure your using 5x refined butane.

In regards to ricchinis post above, i could be wrong, but i dont think it wasthe vector butane, i think it had more to do with the inital design of the wispr, which needed to be reworked. I have about 5 replacement wisprs and tried all different kinds of 5x refined butane, and one brand of 7x refined butane. I experienced the same problem with 2 of the wisprs and different problems with the other 3 but used different butane in all of them, including vector. Since they redesigned the wispr ive been mainly using vector and colibri and have not had any issues since August, which is when i believe they started shipping the newer designed wispr

Hey dasilnei,

Try venting your gas chamber.

1. Fill the wispr gas chamber with butane.
2. Press down on the same place you'd normally push the butane canister's nozzle into, but with a ballpoint pen. This will release the gas from the chamber. Make sure the gas chamber is pointed away from you when you do this.
3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 a number of times.
4. Try your Wispr out again!

Hopefully this works, and this reaches you before sending it back to the manufacturer.
