Discontinued ThermoVape

Haywood

Onward Thru the Fog
I just purchased a Thermovape Evolution and I'm so disappointed with it that I've come here to rant.

The problem is that this vape simply doesn't work.

I think there's a design flaw with the chamber that holds the material you would like to vaporize. The suction from inhaling pulls the material away from heat source. This action prevents the material from reaching the required temperature to produce vapor. This design also allows the material to be sucked completely out of the chamber and spill once the cover is removed.

Maybe if they provide a screen that could secure the material near the heat source the device would produce vapor. My only other experience with vapes is the Volcano and they provide a screen that lowers onto the material that keeps it secure. And that produces excellent vapor.

Like I said, the Volcano is the only other vape I've used. I love it; but I now need a silent option. I thought the Thermovape would be the answer. It failed miserably.
As an experiment, try removing the outer Delrin insulating sleeve from the Evo, and put your mouthpiece directly into the top of the Evo cylindrical core. Don't use the Delrin insulating sleeve for this experiment. Note that you will probably get some bits of herb in your mouth, but this is just an experiment. If it now works great for you, there are a couple of solutions you can pursue, including the screen-on-top-of-the-herb one you mentioned, as well as using a "UFO" mouthpiece, which will both keep the herb in place and prevent getting bits in your mouth. And if that works out for you, you can also modify the unused Delrin insulating sleeve so that it goes over the exposed part of the Evo core and helps to prevent burning your fingers when overly medicated.

Oh, and welcome to the FC forums!!! If you have some spare time, you can read the whole thread as there is a lot of scattered discussion about how to get more out of your Evo. If you search on my username (Haywood), there are a bunch of messages with pictures about using the Evo with the directly connected mouthpiece and modifying the Delrin insulating sleeve. (Not just from me!)

I remember having to toss my T1 into my pocket quickly to get it out of sight. It was so hot...like having a hot poker near my sensitive bits. So I would say heat was definitely another issue I had with it :D

I'm sorry you're not having the success you want but I too strongly suspect it's not because your unit is defective; for sure the design is solid, thousands are happily using theirs. If you want to rant, by all means do so. If you want to learn how to use it I'm happy to try to help you do that.

Your call.

If you want to use it as designed you'll need to understand the beast. It's a convection vape, like Volcano, but unlike Volcano it doesn't have a huge amount of power available. You have to store what heat is produced before the hit. Then you need to transfer that heat up to the load to get vapor. It does not matter where in the bowl the herb is, the entire bowl is supposed to make temperature.

Start out by looking into the empty bowl with fresh charged batteries. Key it on and watch the heater below the grid. After maybe 10 seconds or so it should start to glow, getting brighter over the next several seconds so by say 20 seconds it's stable at full temperature. Let it cool and try a few times until you develop a feel for the preheat time since you won't be able to see it in use. This is step 1, you have to do it each hit, if it's hot already the time to working temperature is shorter but you have to get the entire core hot or it won't heat the air properly.

Now fill it, full seems to work better for most guys, don't pack it in we need free air flow. Smaller charges will work but will (of course) produce vapor at a lower rate.

With fresh battery charge and a load ready to go, key it on for the time required for your unit to reach full temperature, a complete step 1, if not sure, go a few seconds longer. Don't worry about battery life, you can refine that later when we get vapor going.

When step 1 is done, start step 2. This is a long slow steady draw, maybe 15 seconds or so to fill your lungs. Don't go too fast or you'll cool the core too fast although it moves a lot of cooler air, too slow and you 'don't get there in time'. Try to taste the vapor starting, with practice this is pretty easy to do. When you think you have vapor, take a 'test puff'. Blow a bit of whatever is in your mouth, hopefully solid vapor. If it's not there, stay with step 2. If you don't get going in say two breaths, give up and go back to step 1 and preheat again. It's part of the learning curve. It's easy to do once you sort it out.

Once you get a solid 'test puff', you're there. Time for step 3. Done right there should still be plenty of heat in the core (more has been added all along which helps). Dump the wimpy hit in your lungs completely and hit it like you mean it. It's finally ready to go. You've generated and stored the heat, transferred enough up to warm the bowl and load to get it up to temperature, now all the air you draw through the core picks up heat to support vaping on it's way through (it has to be glowing in there for this to happen), within limits the harder you pull the more heat and more vapor.

Unless you do steps 1 and 2 completely you'll never get large vapor production. If you do, it happens. The guys on this forum are living proof. It takes understanding, experience and some skill. It's not automatic like Volcano.

Edit: I notice Brother Haywood suggests you remove the heat shield and otherwise change the way it's designed. He and some of the other 'power users' are having success here, but my advice is to stick with the drill and try to use it as designed first. It will work that way, you can improve on it once you get some results to work with which it sounds like you're not right now?

Good luck.

I knew you would come to his rescue OF.
Hey do you know if the new cera will work the same way or will it be a bit easier? I still have an interest in this little stick shift vape. With my allergies and stuff I am not sure I can do it. The solo is giving me a huge headache so I think this may be worse cause of step one.

Happy to help when I can....but you already knew that, right?

You know while I'm not sure (of course, haven't seen let alone tried one....) but my guess is it will be easier to drive. I'm expecting with the extra insulation and more battery on tap it's going to give a 'bigger window' to work with. I still expect to have to do 3 steps but I expect them to be less demanding. And not having to keep the switch on will be a big plus I think.

I'm betting it will become 'automatic' to use much quicker than T1 or Evolution. I could be wrong there (often am) but we'll know for sure pretty quickly I bet. I think the new model will be a boon to the Medical Users.

Vexed: I just want to add that I agree you should try OF's suggestions first (they're my suggestions too, and apply 100% even if you go on to try the "power user" tricks).

My advice is to simply juice it. Hold the powet on for 20 or 40 sevonds before you begin inhaling. If you had a power supply available yo you then trust me you woulf have no doubts about the evos ability to produce vapor. The batteries rapidly depleted and that can give the impression of a weak or shoddy vape.

Typed with me thumbs haha

I'm still not sure what you are talking about... what am I supposed to be asking him for?
A 3.7 volt supply would be the question I think.
Well, the technology is certainly there and the thought has crossed my mind as well as others I'm sure. Better yet a switchable (variable) 3.7 - 6 volt unit. A back burner project for down the road. That is sure a non-standard voltage to find an off the shelf unit.
Pending on how TET's new concentrate unit pans out, I may need one myself.

Well what about the one that sabortouch is using, it's variable voltage, and plugs in the same way, just not sure about the plug size or any other specs... the plug does not match ...but here's a pic:

That's the idea all right. Any idea on the max current?
Looks good likely for all the new stuff but might fall short for the T1.
Good find Jam!!

Oh, the plug is no biggy, re-wire a new one, or an adapter or would be pretty straightforward.

I never knew what you were talking about either... Well, I am not going to chase the rabbit down the hole just yet, as I don't want to spend a bunch of $ just to experiment right now.
Wise choice. Time to wait a bit to see when all the new product is out and all the specs released.
Besides by looking at you signature, I think you're well stocked. It's like reading the credits at the end of a movie. LOL. jk

I have a thermovape modbox HP evolution, that I like using very much. The only problem is I have been using it with my old revolution's mouthpiece with a piece of screen inserted instead of using the UFO mouthpiece. I wanted to get a UFO mouthpiece in metal or heat resistant plastic, but I can't find them anywhere. I have, however, found the pureflow mouthpiece for sale. My question is, does the bottom of the pureflow mouthpiece stop material from leaving the vaporization chamber the same way the UFO mouthpiece would? I am using the evolution without the insulating sleeve if it makes any difference.

It's a filter it will definitely stop bits of material trying to escape. However it will also restrict the draw enough to give you a hernia if you're not careful. I was basically unable to move enough air at step 2 to get to vaping temperatures.

It's just the ticket on Revolution/DART, but True Flow is the call for the herb vapes and they don't filter (only add moisture).

TV sells a PTFE mouthpiece that should be fine at vaping temperatures. I suggest contacting them for one and a UFO, maybe they can take a break from building Cera prototypes long enough to do that?

Good luck.

What OF said. I'm sure a phone call (or email) to TV will get you exactly what you want. Their web site is a mess right now, and direct contact is a much better idea.

I have a 6v Evo, and prefer the extended length mouthpiece, which keeps my mouth a little further away from the hot core. It comes in white or black Delrin, with or without a UFO already installed. One user here (I forget who) had his Delrin mouthpiece melt when used directly into a Evo, so you might want to consider ordering a PTFE (Teflon) mouthpiece (also with the UFO already installed), which only comes in white, and is only available in standard (short) length. None of my Delrin mouthpieces has even come close to melting, or even deforming, but the pictures of the melted mouthpiece were graphic. :) Since you have the HP version of the Evo, you might want to discuss whether PTFE is a requirement.

I gotta say, ive been using the stone pad at the shop all the time! its a pretty nice addition to TV!

Isn't that the truth! I've been using mine and have gotten so used to it I forget it's stuck on the way it is. The other night I got out the LV T1 for some more 'testing' (love to test that little guy....). It seemed a little slow so I decided to change the battery. The second one was not much better so I decided to break out the charger. I was annoyed that the second battery was sticking in the tube as well, but it too looked OK, I sure didn't remember them being that tight. Anyway, when I put the T1 down to put the pair in the charger the pad hit the carpet.....feeling suitably dumb I understood why the batteries were suddenly sticking.

Pipes had done it to me again......

Neat product for sure.

LOL, been there for sure. You tend to forget what makes it stick.

Don't feel bad, that just happened to me too  my thumb pad falls off easy so I have a hair band holding it on... forgot it was there.

Glad i got time to buy a T1 and Revolution. They are nice pieces to my collection and i will continue to use them. I really love my T1 and don't want to leave it unused on the shelf. I just wished i had time to grab a power supply though...

I'm considering getting a Cera but i might wait and see...
