Gear Acceptable brands of butane to buy for doing your runs!

I thought we could start a thread and list off the good to go brands of butane that we know are ready to be used to make our lovely oils.

What to look for on the bottle when you are checking an unknown brand:
A label saying "near zero impurities"
it written on the bottle that is is 50 ppm or less impurities

The mirror test:
This is a standard test you can do to see what level of impurities you have in your unknown quality can of butane.
1. Spray the butane (a 1 second blast or something short) so that it blasts onto a mirror. It will spray a rig on butane on the glass and go white.
2. Wait for the butane to evaporate into the air. now look at what is left behind on the mirror
3. If you see any discoloration/white rings these are the impurities (make sure you clean the mirror first of course right?)

Note: Now I recommend you try this with an accepted can of butane too because they do not leave invisible marks either. there WILL be some residual on the mirror even with these types! So I suggest you try it with 2 cans (One you know is good to go and your tester can of fuel) so that you can fairly compare and judge for yourself.

Brands that are acceptable according to users here on FC:
Colibri
London
Newport
Silver Match
Vector

Brands from the Keen World marketing site:
Colibri
Colton
Cora
CTC
Davidoff
David Ross
Dunhill
IMCO
K2
Newport
Sarome
Silver Match
Unilight
Win

Give me more brands that you guys use and I will add em to the list!

Here in Canada you buy a 12 pack case of butane cans (300ml) for 65 bucks taxes in. that works out to 5.40 CDN a can.

Perhaps you should include this link in the OP too? newport list

I have Silver Match butane, it also carries the zero impurities label but it doesn't have the ppm info on the bottle. Never did the mirror test btw, I just trust the label and my taste buds (when I was still using lighter based vapes that made me inhale tane residue) on this one.

Didn't found this myself btw. I used a more expensive brand first till Djonkoman pointed me towards this brand. It's just under 2 euro's per 250ml can, which is a pretty decent price in this country.

edit: for dutch folks who may read this in the future, you can buy the stuff at Xenos & I've also seen it at some Poiesz supermarkets behind the cigarette counter.

You can always research the MSDS material safety data sheet

That will tell you by law 100% of the exact ingredients in your tane!!

This is an international forum Lepstadder. MSDS or PSDS is basically a American thing and not really useful for products from other countries. They have something similar in other countries though, check here for other locations.

While I dont blast my buds, I DO use Xikar butane for my lighters/torch which keeps me happy :)

I went ahead and looked at their site our of curiousity, and they claim that their stuff is less than 15ppm of impurities.

And they carry this stuff at my local cigar shop.

I bought a can of this when i bought my new zippo blu lighter, and it (the fuel) clogged up the works! :( at least i thought it must be that. i decided it was not a good idea for me to think about using it for runs after that happened. but only 15ppm is very impressive! i wonder now...

I use the lighter as a sparker for my propane torch these days to keep my oil rig running! :p

Regarding the newport list how current is that? because as times chance i know brands that were once acceptable were now no longer considered so. the example i am thinking about specifically, is King. I didn't see it on the newport list though either so maybe it is current? :)

I started with vector thats what the med shop told me they used. Then I switched to power and/or mega (5x). Now I think there is an off taste. I did many many runs with these butanes. Finally way later I can't use these concentrates because they affect me adversely. I'm switching back to vector now and I'll come back a bit later and update on the quality difference. I do not get medicated properly from power or mega brands currently. I don't suggest using them. From what I remember I never had a problem with vector and always enjoyed the concentrates they made with it at the shop.

Ok UPDATE. Do not use Mega or Power butanes. Stick with the quality name brand stuff. If the company has a website and msds sheet thats when you know they are more legitimate.

I always use 300ml London universal gas refill, its not just advised by people here it is sold by keen i presume same mix as newport etc has near zero impurities logo on.

Everyone in UK seems to use this i get cheap in bulk 72 300ml cans for 90 delivered, not sure on conversion thou! http://buylondonbutanegas.moonfruit.com/
Perhaps you guys don't get London as just for UK market as is branded in England flag.

I always use thermos method, yummy scrummy and smoke with bubbler with wand.

Everyone in UK seems to use as cheapest near zero impurities about .

You can beat that, mate. Prices there are the same as anywhere online for 12 x 300ml cans of butane- ebay, amazon etc 25.

I get it from the pound shop when I'm near for 1 a can. Trouble is I live over 100 miles away, and you can't really buy more than a couple of cans at a time.

Or 12 x 250ml Newport for 8.99 from here (plus 7.99 delivery, unfortunately). Still works out over 20 cheaper delivered on a large 21 litre deal as above.

Take this as a Bump/ update to an older thread... I personally dont want this info to die so I would like to add Lucienne to the list. I just ordered a 12 pack of 300ml cans for $48 here in the states via ebay... supposed to be here tomorrow :)

I used to use Lucienne in a pinch since it was readily available and only $4 a can at my local cigar shop. I stopped using it after comparing a Vector/Lucienne concentrate from the same starting medicine back to back. Lucienne seems to add a weird taste and the oil was a tad darker.

I've used Vector almost exclusively lately, but Fasfill is another I would add to the list.

Ha! How ironic... I had been using fasfil cause its the only thing the one shop in town carries... I had to order a whole case of lucienne to get the price down to 4 a can, but i might check out vector after im through this case... i did however notice a diffrence from fasfil to lucienne, but ive started using ethanol co- solvent like in fulvics tech to help purge... That has made a world of diffrence alone.

here in Oz Ventti is easy to obtain ($4.95from bunnings for locals) & the can states
'near zero stable non-volatile impurities (less than 30ppm)' & it passes the mirror test.

makes nice amber shatter.

so, just as a little update... im down to two cans in my case of Lucienne.. Im not sure... but I think that pyramid may have been right... ive had some issues recently with my runs that seem to be solvent related... doing more than enough purge and yet... i still taste a little something there... so i am thinking that when i go out of town for for the holidays im gonna grab me a can or two of Vector since they had it in the LHS when i was there. ive also considered doing another run with fasfil... on some other forums I have been seeing people using it more and more... I never had a problem with it... I just couldn't find a MSDS sheet on it so i tried a case of lucienne... at least i got two cans left for me torches!!

ill report back when i have done some more research.

farscaper,
I've used Vector, Fastfil and most recently Neon 5x. Do not use Neon. It passed the mirror test but had a bad smell like natural gas. Gave my oil a weird taste. I'm going back to Fastfil.

Buy Vector or Colibri, they're the best.

Also Colibri is available in Germany respectively Europe (not so sure about all the other brands listed here) for 4 € a can and the outcomes are really nice (no funky smells or white residue).
So everyone in EU keep an eye out for these:
