My SSV knob pot broke
2012-08-31%2017.45.23.jpg

The glass piece that goes there kept slipping, so I tried to widen out the two little prongs so the cap would fit tighter. The metal is brittle and it just broke. What do I replace it with? I have some experience soldering.

After using the Volcano for several years I have only recently cought on to water filtration with a Vapocane and Vaporbrothers Hydrator, really loving it as it's much better on my breathing apparatus causing less symptoms of allergy and asthma. Which I just have to live with either way, but water filtration and longer pathways for the vapor really seems to improve it for me healthwise.

So I was considering direct draw units for use with the hydrator and decided on ordering an ssv silver surfer as it's praised for its quality and versatility. Seeing this thread is 129 pages long and I don't want to read through all of them, are there any highlights or useful tips as recommend reading for this unit an experienced user of this unit could point me to? Thanks :)

For my next vaporizer purchase, I think I've narrowed it down to DBV, SSV and LSV. Is there any reason to get DBV or the SSV if I'm going to be using the device mainly through a water pipe? I already have spare elbow joints from my EQ, if I end up going with DBV or SSV, would the elbow fit in the whip of these vapes so I could fit it in an 18mm water pipe?

With the SSV/DBV the hose + 18mm adapter allows you to hold the water pipe in your hand much easier than a LSV + water pipe combo. But the hose adds a bit of drag and a longer vapor path.

Yeah they work because of them glass ripples, the SSV hose is just slightly bigger than the EQ hose. I still prefer the angle and the air flow of the SSV 18mm and 14mm adapters to the EQ's 90 degree approach.

My SSV arrived and my first impression is very good. I hooked it up to the Vaporbrothers hydrator and got great result from the first toke on. I just hope I don't break the heating element or some of the glass parts as they a bit fragile.

I'm disappointed that no aroma diffuser was delivered with it, they didn't mention that it is an extra accessory in the shop where I ordered it, the description there was a bit misleading in that regard.

Great unit though and nice glass work :)

This is my new favorite setup :)

Hmm, I just noticed a little bend/kink in the metal around the heating element. I wonder if I should try and bend it back... probably better not, huh. As long as it works don't fix it, right?

They do that intentionally to ensure a good fit. I accidentally flattened a bend on a shim I had once, and could notice that my heater cover was a bit looser, still worked no problem, it would just slide a little bit.

I would leave it how it is.

So that's how it's supposed to go? LoL

I was wondering why the ones they sent with my HC where bent like that. Now I know.

I'm upgrading to silicon tubing and I have a question. I got a whip with my SSV (purchased from amazon) and it fit the GonG wand well. But when I purchased a new complete standard kit from SSV the old tube would fit, but fall out with little force. But the whip that came with the complete kit fits fine on the standard, and is a little big for the GonG. So my question is simply what size tubing should I purchase for the standard wand? I read that it should be 3/8" ID, 1/2" OD, but I don't want to purchase the wrong size.

So I bought a silver surfer several months ago, and I think my heater control knob is stripped :( if I want to turn it on or change the temperature, I have to remove the glass knob to do it accurately, because if I just turn it with the glass knob on, it doesn't actually turn the dimmer switch. :( Is there anything I can do to fix this short of buying a new knob?

Just picked up a SSV from Taylor (the other side vapes) and the GoG adapter.

Are there any sections of this thread especially worth reading? Its size is a bit intimidating.

What advice would you give me?
Edit: I've read as far back as June.

My standard glass SSV, SYN inverted showerhead, and some lemon haze :science:

Videos are hard to make. Sorry for the lack of exhale in the second one, totally blanked and just shut the camera off. Needless to say I am in a very good place right now :freak:

Well, here ya go!

And my best advice for the SSV is to play around with the temperature and draw rate to find what you like and get comfortable with the device.

Here are some pics of my most recent SSV setup:
-SSV:
With custom GG HC - Angled so that my wand faces parallel to the ground, and colors to match my unit (red/black/white).
And Custom Temp knob - made with colors to match the setup (red/black/white)
-Fishbone Space Hammer: With Sovereignty 180 gridded downstem
-WPA - originally an adapter for using a TI nail/dome, but a screen fits in the 18mm male joint just like the older GG wands

Closeup of the knob

Closeup of the HC - Sorry for the bad angle/dirtiness

I've been using my SSV whip-free for a while now - Pretty much since I got my LSV it's been all GonG.

Hi everybody,

I am new here. Sorry for my english : it is not my nativ language.
SSV is my first vaporiser and I am very happy with it (especialy my lungs !). I have completly stop to smoke.
But I have some doubt about the knob to change the temperature : I am not sure that it is working (it turn well but I am not sure that the temperature change). How can know that ?

Thanks for you help

Just take a small piece of paper, fold it up to the proper size, and put it along side of the shaft as you install the glass knob. It'll act as a shim to tighten up your connection. You want a tight fit, but not so tight that you can't remove the glass knob again.

Welcome Fuchsbauer. Your English is fine. Don't worry about it. If your glass knob is tight on the metal shaft, it should be working fine. Try turning the unit on, but don't turn the temp control up very much. Once it's warmed up, you should be able to find the point where you get light vapor. Turning it up (usually to about 12 o'clock if it turns on at 7-8) should get you good vapor, and turning it up to around 3 should provide thicker, high temp vapor and your bowl contents should be dark at that point. You should be able to get the full range of vapor, from light to heavy, along with the darker remains in your bowl, as you turn the temp up.

Thanks for your response.
Do you notice a real difference when the knob is turned to the min and the max ?
I have the impress that I have no difference with mine, but maybe it is just an impress...

There is a big difference. You should feel it and you can see it in the color the heater element glows from a faint orange at the lowest setting to a deep and strong color on the maximum setting. In addition to the color you should notice a significant difference in temperature between min and max positions from the radiant heat the thing gives off and definitely while vaping.

If you still are not sure here's what I would do. First check if the glass knob is wiggly and take it off to use the bare knob (potentiometer, rheostat). Check if the heating element changes color when adjusting the bare knob. If it does, do attach the glass knob firmly, maybe by bulking it out as per Max' suggestion with a piece of paper. If the color of the heating element does not change between low and high settings with the bare knob and you do not notice a definite difference between settings you may have a defective unit and need to invoke a warranty exchange or repair.

I checked one more time during lunch time and I definitively notice no difference of color between the min and max.
Seem that I will have to send my SSV and use again my roll-paper :-(

Thank you very much for your help.

I finally got around to doing a little review on my 3 year old SSV. She's a champ. Very solid unit. Been serving me well for years. Thanks guys

I'm not sure if anyone has posted a mod like this yet but I figured out a way to shorten the air path on the standard wand. I used a piece of the silicon tubing from my UD as a spacer.

I use it to pack a very small quantity.

Thank you, I used an index card and that seemed to do the trick! :)

First I've seen. Brilliant.

I was trying a paperclip spacer, but it wouldn't hold the screen very well and the metal would absorb a bunch of the heat. I'm gonna give this a go.

Was gonna order the VB miniwhip, but I've heard they are pretty fragile.

Lol, you made this blazed runner? It's creative and very affordable. If that's true, then you've watched my youtube show.

I think what you mean is that the author of that video subscribes to your show, and yes, that's me. I do watch thedankcity and I love it. You guys are up there with tokin daily and r3dband. Better, IMO. I am actually from Oakland so I like to see you guys represent. I think the first time I saw the SSV was on your show, and you guys were using an Ariser solo stem as the wand for it. That's what gave me the idea of having a smaller bowl. I got the idea for the spokes thing because I volunteer at a bike collective and we have tons of stuff like that around. You can do a lot with bicycle spokes.
