wow that new MF grinder looks great! interesting concept but im really diggin the design and aesthetics of it. this just shows how much MF really pays attention to their consumer cause there's always constant talk about 'fineness of the grind' when it comes to using a LB. now they came up with a solution that is better than using a coffee grinder. never disappointed with this great company

While I agree it's an eye catcher for sure, and I'm trying to convince myself I'd really use it rather than my coffee grinder and bulk loading .125 gram loads into vials for use later, I'm not sure I agree they're spectators in our babble about fine grinds. In fact, way back, their engineer was giving out ideal grain size. They very much researched the issue, even in the Launch Tube (predecessor) days. Their first offering was obviously based on such understandings (if grinds finer than most). I see them as leaders in the area.

They also recently brought the 'keep it real dry' advantages to our attention. Words to live by.

For sure it's a pretty unique company at many levels, driven by what the end user experiences.....which I like very much. Also the 'made right here' part is cool IMO.

That's why I like USPS Priority Mail. I will always choose that option, if given a choice. (I always ask) The max delivery time is 5 days, except around Christmas, and the cost is more reasonable compared to UPS and Fedex.

While it's true their price is often lowest (after all they're subsidized by our taxes....), their tracking 'sucketh mightily'......

And thus far, they're the only outfit to manage to loose my package between their local Office and my house (twice in fact), and even within the PO when I went down to sign for it (only once there, they said 'they must have left it in the truck....even though they clear the trucks each night.....). Professionals that can actually loose their jobs don't seem to do stuff like that.

As Mae West once famously said, 'ya pays your money and takes yer choice'.

I have been dealing with the USPS (using Priority Mail) for many years, and they have never lost one of my packages. Sometimes I ask for delivery confirmation, sometimes I don't, but they always get to me, and other destinations, safe and sound. Personally, I've had more trouble with UPS and Fedex.

I still love my MFLB's, though. :)

That grinder looks gorgeous. I wonder how easily it gums up. I clean my metal grinders with ISO, but this is wood. Some of you must have wood grinders, how do you clean them?

Hi,

As with the Box itself, we have attempted to design it in such a manner that will not require much cleaning, if at all. The main assumption that makes this possible is that anything that goes into the grinder is very dry (this is true for the Box also). Same as with a metal grinder, it will jam if you put stuff that is too wet and/or sticky. Also, it should be noted that this is not just another wooden grinder. Its internal action is very different than any of the other wooden grinders currently on the market -- it represents a new and useful technology. It has been designed from the onset to prevent jamming.

Another way to handle possible issues is to think of this device as a "finishing grinder". Use a common metal grinder first to break up bulk material for storage, and then use this grinder to finalize the grind when loading the Box. This grinder will take the results of any regular grinder and turn it into a perfect finish grind -- much finer than would be possible with any amount of effort with a metal grinder otherwise (the inverting technique notwithstanding).

In either case, it is to be understood that this is a connoisseur instrument -- it is not intended as a general purpose grinder. It is very specialized to solve a particular set of needs -- to get the absolute most out of your herbs with the minimum amount of "home installed technical stuff" (chargers, cables, etc).

While I agree it's an eye catcher for sure, and I'm trying to convince myself I'd really use it rather than my coffee grinder and bulk loading .125 gram loads into vials for use later...

It is important to note that we are *not* attempting to compete with the coffee grinder -- which for home use provides for excellent results. Coffee grinders are very inexpensive, widely available, and will generally provide a very fine grind. If people have not already tried one, I would recommend it. Also, if you are going to use a coffee grinder, you *must* get the whirling blades type -- any other type will *not* work for your application (it /will/ jam eventually).

Since there is very little relationship between the cost of a coffee grinder and its utility for this application, you will often get the best results from the cheapest coffee grinder you can find (which is a bit ironic). I also suggest that it is best to get a separate grinder for use with herbs -- or at least to clean them thoroughly whenever switching between coffee and herbs. Without cleaning, either way, it is going to affect taste -- it is simply easier to have two separate dedicated machines.

That said, there are a few reasons why our wooden grinder might also be recommended over a common coffee grinder. The one thing about an ultra fine grind is that it significantly increases the available active surface area. During use this is a very good thing. During storage, this advantage becomes a disadvantage -- it can lead to decreased effectiveness and taste due to diffusion and ambient oxidization (ie, to get "stale"). Attempting to store fully and correctly ground material for more than a few days is fairly tricky to get right (ie, it is hard to do). Therefore, best practice is, once dry, to grind *only* as much material as you need, just before you are going to use it. Unfortunately, this is one thing that a coffee grinder cannot do: grind just a little bit. Our grinder is designed just exactly to solve this problem -- to grind just enough and to load it directly to the Box (no storage needed). In other words, our grinder provides for minimal wastage, either due to age/staleness or due to mechanical effects.

The other main problem that we were trying to solve with our grinder is to have all of the benefits of a super fine grind while out in the field (ie, when away from home). There are no good coffee grinders that will work for grinding herbs that do not also require significant energy (whirling blade coffee grinders absolutely need electricity from a wall plug). As such, one of our main design intents was that our grinder tech must be able to operate purely on minimal mechanical energy -- thus making it both portable and practical.

Another significant advantage to our finishing grinder is that it has a tendency to automatically separate stems. Coffee grinders, by their nature, will powder most of the stems as well -- thus diluting the mix and contributing to a noticeably harsher taste. If there are any visible stems left after grinding with a coffee grinder (and there usually are some), they will have to be separated by hand before storage or loading. With the Magic Flight Finish Grinder, the stems remain behind while all of the good stuff goes through into the Box. Metaphorically, it is a little bit like a reverse osmosis unit -- it allows the good taste through while holding the bad tastes back.

Finally, it is to be noted that our grinder is _tiny_ compared to a coffee grinder. At about half the size, it is even smaller than the Box. Naturally, this makes it more portable. Having it be silent when in operation is also important, as it contributes to stealthiness. If you have a coffee grinder that you use /only/ for herbs, every one in your household -- and even your close neighbors -- will eventually come to associate that unique sound and know what you are about. We felt that these aspects were important enough that we even ensured that the grinder had its own custom tin, lined with felt, to ensure that even in not in use -- when just carrying it around -- that it would make no noise. We wanted to ensure that as with the Box itself, people walking next to you would not be able to tell that you had one in your pocket.

In any case, like the Box itself, the Magic-Flight Finishing Grinder is a unique product. It (the FG) has advantages and disadvantages -- some things it is really good at, and others it was never intended for. However, combined with the Nano grinder we are already offering, there is not much that a true connoisseur cannot do.

Over the next few days, I will do my best to post answers whatever questions I can.

Have a great day!

First off, thanks for yet another informative and well thought out post.....the very stuff you'd expect from the folks that bring you 'the Box'.

While the various ideas all have some merit, I think it's up to the end user to decide. As I said, I can't convince myself I'd actually use it because in part I don't use either of my nano grinders for the LB. As I said, I favor premeasured loads meaning at best I'd be storing coarse ground herb (and therefore need wider mouth vials...). Since I pull the stems before grinding and try to grind just before fully dry and measure out at seal them promptly I feel I loose no taste or potency. This from A/B testing, since I have more than one Box available.

This scheme also takes field use to an even better level. Putting a few vials and batteries in your pocket is all that's needed. Sometimes I take an empty vial and save AVB, sometimes I just toss it. Like you, I don't pretend to have 'the answer' (or even a very good one) just reporting what has worked well for me after some experimentation.

As you so rightly point out, this is another area in life where choice is our friend. If you insist that comes from Love, I won't argue that point.

Thanks again. For the comments and increasing our choices.

You are acting like this because you can't get discounted MFLB's for your friend's? Why? None of us got our MFLB's at a discount, we all paid full price.:(

I wish they taught reading comprehension at whatever elementary school you went to.

I am not mad about not getting a discount, I was grossed out by the MFLB rep's politician like way of speaking and saying they're doing it "all to 'help people breath easier' ".

And how he pussy footed around the fact that stealthiness and subtle portability are the MFLB's best features.

I see no need for the insults, it detracts yet more from your credibility IMO. Suffice it to say she is not at all alone?

How is it you know that MF is being other than perfectly honest? If you'd been reading their stuff from the start I think you'd agree with the rest of us, 'it's the real deal'. Just because they don't agree with you doesn't make them wrong you know. And once again, I don't think your attack does you credit.

My reading comprehension is just fine, but thanks for your concern. :)

Grossed out? I don't see why. It did seem that you were not happy because Magic Flight said there would be no discounts, at least that's how I read it. I saw nothing wrong with their post. There are a lot of good features about the MFLB.

Sorry you're so cynical. I used to be like that, until I almost died one night.

I can assure you, Magic Flight, is most sincere in their dealings with people and their words. Since the night my aorta almost exploded, they have done so much for me out of pure kindness. I see it in this thread, with others on an almost daily basis

I can assure you, the comprehension of your post, is fine. Had I been in your shoes, I would have latched onto paka's convenient and generous out, he gave you.

Take it from someone that has lost their access to this board, for being rude... its not worth it.

I caught the humor of the post, but had to re-read a few times to make sure.

The new grinder looks awesome, but as OF has said, I use a little vial and coffee grinder for sandy consistency. I also store my stuff in a cool dark area that doesn't really change ambient temperature ever. I haven't noticed any loss in potency.

Had a big thunder storm today. Lighting struck really close to my apartment window and blew out my MFLB charger... :(

I should look at the bright side though, my SSV was plugged into the very same outlet and is perfectly fine. I suppose that's due to it having a grounding prong.

Nothing really. Kind of the MFLB teaser attitude. They love to fake us out. They'll talk about one thing, then BAM! New grinder? WTF? The concentrate adapter has been under development for quite a while. Wouldn't surprise me if they dropped it on us, Monday w/o any advance notice.

That's just how they work. Its kind of cool.

P.S. I'm not saying the concentrate adapter is coming Monday. I don't think anyone knows when its coming out, or if it will be a complete redesign.

EDIT: I don't know if you're aware, 443330... but I do know a few people that work at Magic Flight. So yeah, I "hear things", but never specifics. Its always, "Wait until you see what's coming next week..." or hints/things like that.

I have read about their previous attempts at a concentrate adapter and I am so s'toked for this to happen. Almost everything MF brings out is awesome and looks the part.

The grinder looks totally mint! I love the grating action and it's simplistic design. The price is a bit high for what it is but I understand why that is. (not that the price will stop me from throwing my money at you guys..)

I'm about to buy one of those snazzy walnut LB's and a Power adapter among many other accessories and am contemplating buying one of these new grinders. Should I wait for the final release? So it's not BETA and has all the bugs ironed out?

Is there a rough time line for how this happens? Or does it depend on customers complaints?

I don't know if they qualify as previous attempts. Magic-Flight is... is not your average company. I crack up at their "Beta" Label. Trust me... that thing has been put through R&D Hell probably, long before it reached that sales page. Is the PA still listed as beta? The WPA? Honestly, I don't know... but they were on the market and being used for a very long time, with the beta label.

No, they have real beta testers. Wish I was one of them, for that sweet ass grinder. I keep sending them emails, saying... "YES! I WILL BETA TEST THE WALNUT MFLB!" Yet, my simple request goes unanswered. Bastar... never mind. ;)

Besides, once you're in the community. You're family. Especially if you stick around this thread. Always someone lurking. Always regular contact with MF (I'm always available to hit up, I have been asked to bring attention to issues that aren't getting resolved or really noisy people. But, there's a lot of me/us in this thread. I'm more vocal about it). Always an answer. Your concerns about the latest and greatest, will somehow happen for you... when its meant to. Don't know what it is... couldn't explain it. Well, I could... but you would think I'm crazy. So... just jump on board. You won't regret it.

DISCLAIMER: I am not actually asking for a Beta Box. I have a regular one, it works great. I don't need two. If and when, I need a second box... I will attempt to purchase a special wood box at that time.

Yeah Magic Flight operates way differently than any other business I've had to deal with. They're by far my "favorite" company to deal with because they're not on with bullshit, they actually care and will sit with you and troubleshoot, and if/when that doesn't work they just replace it for you (when applicable) at no cost to you. With a lot of companies that I've dealt with (mostly tech stuff) even if it IS in the warranty, it's still a hassle. Not with MF.

THIS WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A JOKE!

I want that to be clear. I made the comment to get a chuckle. There wasn't ANY ulterior motive, nor have I made ANY attempt to score a Walnut MFLB. The joke, is that they are WAY past Beta, so I seriously doubt, they have any available for Beta. Besides, I have been MORE than blessed in this department, I would hope my friends at MF know my tongue-in-cheek humor. They've been a blessing, I don't expect anything from them, except their continued exceptional customer service and friendship.

Thank you for the lovely introduction. I already have a LB and nano grinder. I have also exchanged a few emails with the MF family and they are happy, friendly and polite.

A few tips I've found that make my experience that much better is using a small amount lipbalm/vaseline on the top edge/lip/seam of the nano grinder. This helps tremendously when all you have is really sticky/wet material. I had so much trouble before doing this, this tip has saved me a lot of time.
Another tip if you lost your small brush is to use the small brushes that come with shavers. I've actually found it does a better job of cleaning the trench than the stock MF brush!
