Discontinued Pax Vaporizer by Ploom

That might explain why I like red over orange. I fill mine with about .25 grams so the conduction heat does not transfer as well between the flowers. Yours is more tightly packed, so the plant material transfers the heat to the material next to it more efficiently. You get better results on orange because you have a tighter pack to your oven load. The PAX does seem to work better the tighter you pack it.

Ah, very interesting. Yes, I have found that if I pack a "loose" oven then I tend to switch it to red. However, now that my temp button is sticking I just leave it on orange.

I'll contact ploom about the issue to see what they say.

I totally agree, my first bowl was the dregs from my grinder. It just barely filled the chamber loosely. Went from medium to high and got thin vapor but nothing to call home about. ABV had come charring...

Next bowl I filled it, packed it down by half, and filled it some more. Started on medium and was getting insane flavor and clouds, took 6-8 full hits and turned it off to save the rest for later.

Well, later has come and I'm expecting good things!

Get your Freak on....
Well I have finally gotten to test the Pax. Amazing.
first off, if you are on the line of getting this unit due to a high price range throw a couple extra bucks in and you will not regret it. Getting the package and opening it up the exact second I got it kind of shows the anticipation I had. To hold this unit in your hands feels really awesome. I couldn't wait to charge er' up.

I started off using the low setting just to get a feel for it. I wasn't feeling anything to much so I turned it up to orange/medium. This produce much more visible vapor and quite tasty at that.

Basically I packed the oven as tight as I could and tried the cigar method (thanks to SliM) and it worked like a charm.

One tightly packed bowl was enough to get me and my girlfriend wayyy medicated for about 4 hours and there was still some flower that wasn't totally vaped! Needless to say, this is definitely the best portable I have ever used. I even went to bed bath and beyond and got a small felt pouch used to store your smartphones. The Pax fits perfectly and gives me peace of mind when it's in a pocket or in a bag instead of being out in the open.

Sorry this post was kind of long, I am just coming down as I type this and I was very excited to post my experience. Hopefully someone will be convinced into buying this unit after reading this. You won't regret it!

Happy vaping! :)

Glad to see yours arrived and you are loving it like the rest of us...

NO FIRE FOR YOU!!
@slim: i think you're right, vapor shouldn't be getting in those areas at all. however, i like to "suck off" (ahem...) the last bits of vapor after i click the mouthpiece in. i felt this also cooled the oven off faster so my herb wouldn't cook too much. wonder if this makes vapor get in weird places?

fwiw, i martyr'ed my warranty today and took the pax apart. super easy. one tiny torx screw in the rear pops out, and the entire inner unit slides right out of the sleeve. only gotchas are the two inner magnets (keep oven lid in or they'll pop out.. reinsert with red stripe facing out), and two super thin white rubber rings that seal the base against the housing sleeve (be careful and doublecheck before reinsertion so they don't tear). the good news is that the battery looks super easy to replace, even for the non-electronically inclined. i took a look at my white temp button and yes, it did crack in half off the button area. ah well, i don't mind, i use it on nothing but orange/medium anyway. :)

Yup its time to clean, make sure the little ring around the shaft of the mouthpiece is clean and can move freely. I'm pretty sure there is some magnetic sensors in the unit that vape goo will interfere with in the long run.

Also I found that to keep the device clean and operational for a good few years its going to be very important not to get any goo inside the device around the little pipe that goes into the mouthpiece, so make sure the tip and inside of the mouthpiece shaft is always clean. Think that's why Ploom wants you to clean it pretty regularly.

So I cleaned it, still happening though. i think I may clean it again. If its still not working I will call Ploom. Hopefully if they have to send another it gets sent quick. Even with this minor issue I love my Pax!

On the lower pic, notice the silver bar running lengthwise on the right side? That's the "clip" mechanism for the mouthpiece, it works pretty cleverly in conjunction with the spring and floating ring on the downstem of the mouthpiece.

As for sending the pax back in for a warranty, I knew I opted myself out of that chance when I opened mine up. No worries.

Sticking Mouthpiece? Stiff Temp Button? ..... NO VAPE FOR YOU!!

Wow even on the inside this thing looks like an Apple product!

In exchange I'll offer you this advice: Ploom seem like good people if they offer a 10 year warranty. Plus they don't have a presence on this forum. I would contact them some time in the future, or now even if you have an alt. vape setup, and just say my "My Ploom's glowing button broke. Can you help me?"

I tried clearing it out when closed too (until I read your post lol) and they don't say not to...

Haha, thanks for the advice joekickass. But nah, I don't want to be dishonest, I did break it then open it up knowingly. Who am I kidding - I just don't want to spend another day without my pax! Haha. I might even get another one in a diff color, and just keep this as a backup pax.. Yeah, I love the pax *that* much!

I love that even when there is something wrong with their pax, people are so reluctant to send it back because they love their pax so much and don't want to be without it! I'm still waiting on my pax from planetvape. Looks like the expected ship date got pushed back from today, Aug 7th to Aug 10th...which is a Friday...which means I won't get it until at least Monday. It was soo close, I could almost taste the vapors. I've never even used a vape before and I'm already over combustion lol If it's gonna take so long, I'm considering just waiting for the cobalt one instead.

Quick question to the people who are having problems with the sticking mouth peace. Is it the mouth piece mechanism itself that's sticking, or a mechanism inside the pax unit itself? I remember ploom saying that you could fully submerse the mouth piece in either soap and water, or iso alcohol. If it's the mouth piece that sticks because it's that gummed up, I wonder if soaking it in iso alcohol would be the easiest way to clean it well.

Anyone else find party mode?

I'm trying what Sli.M. did in the video but it just keeps flashing the battery at me...

Maybe different motions for each one?

Edit: I'm getting excellent abv packing it really tight! (on medium)

Vapenazi, since you can see the clip mechanism can you spread some light as to why all the sticking issues?
I assume that's where the problem is.

skrap:

from what i can tell, there are two different mouthpiece problems - one is when the mouthpiece gets stuck at the bottom, and one is when the mouthpiece pops back out or refuses to clip in.

from what i can see (i haven't devoted too much time into this yet), the sticking problem seems unrelated to the clip mechanism, and sticks just from the tight/snug fit of the mouthpiece downstem, especially at the bottom of travel.

when it refuses to clip in and keeps popping back out, that seems to be from the mouthpiece downstem's floating collar sticking to the bottom, and not pushing up freely to let the clip snag the edge.

when this collar gets snagged up top however, the mouthpiece stays retained and clicking it open will not work, as it keeps clicking back into the down/closed position without opening. the clip keeps engaging (as the collar thing doesnt fall down), so the mouthiece never extends.

this is what i've observed so far but i could be interpreting things wrong. it's a pretty tight fit in there and it is hard to really see everything in motion at once. all these problems are easily solved with a quick iso wipe of both the inside and outside of the mouthpiece stem, as well as that floating collar, at least for me..

Well add me to the club, vape brothas and sistas! After lurking hard and reading every post (yes, every post) in this informative thread, I pulled the trigger on this sexy device!

A BIG thanks to everyone who has posted their experiences, shared video, pictures and knowledge. I knew I had to have it on first sight, but you early adopters provided the the 3rd party proof of what we all hoped for: the function lives up to the form :)

I'm really looking forward to adding my own content over the coming days. Until then, Keep Calm and Vape On!

My mouthpiece won't click into the lock or off position. I got it to lock of last night but it is hit or miss. I am going to clean it a second time and then check. You are right though, I don't want to have to send it back and be without it because it is so awesome!

I haven't tried the low setting yet. How did that work for you? Did you pack the bowl tightly and did you get a good amount of vapor?

OK, this is a great thread and I love reading everyone's thoughts and experiences. I keep going back and forth about buying one.

I'd like a cool portable that I could put in pocket and take to work. [This seems to be the one!]
I need it to not smell significantly like my MFLB [I know, clean it and it won't smell!]
I need it WORK and produce nice clouds with minimal time involved [Seems like it certainly does!]
I need it to be reliable and functional at all times [Sticking temp button and mouthpieces that don't pop out or stay out/in concerns me!]

So, I guess I am still on the fence. The temp button doesn't really faze me, but the mouthpiece does. How durable is this design? Are the mouthpiece problems symptomatic of a larger design problem, or is it just a random glitch for some?

As far as smell, it's very minimal at least I think compared to the MFLB. Last night I packed a super tight bowl in my Pax, hit it a couple times and soared over the moon. I didn't feel like taking the flowers out so I left them in the oven. This morning I went and smelled it and it was incredibly faint which I thought was surprising yet awesome.

And as for the mouthpiece, I have personally had no problems with my thus far!

I think you should definitely pull the trigger on the pax, it is truly amazing!

Happy Vaping :)

ORDERED the Pax yesterday, should arrive tomorrow. EXCITED to try this unit out, you guys really have made this decision easy for me with all the rave reviews and all. I've been lurking for the past few months and i absolutely had to sign up and share my thoughts on this unit when i get it. I was soo close to pulling the trigger on the SOLO, but this unit caught my eye for some reason. For those of you who have both, which do you prefer and why? Personally, i didn't like the whole stem situation on the solo, VERY INCONVENIENT. CHEERS! :)
