That's some amazingly beautiful work. That guy must have put in a lot of hours of hard work to gain the skills necessary to do that. Any idea how long he spent making sub-$100 pieces before he was skilled enough (and able to devote enough of his life) to work his way up to the "big leagues" and do really cool stuff? I have no idea how long it takes to build the skills necessary to make the intricate and complex glass artwork that I see out there, but I'm curious about it.

LOL That guy is one of the top lamp workers in the country. Go to the other thread I posted with all the heady stuff. He did a solo gallery show with many sets ranging 4-$7k. Line down the block and out the front door to get in. All the glass sold in under a minute. the rest of the paintings he did sold for hundreds and thousands. sold in less than 10 minutes.

$5800

A Mobius is not high end, this is high end.

Oh... so now we have to pay $5k or more, to be worthy?

All you Mobius owners, throw your pieces of shit in the trash and start saving.

Oh, btw.... $5800 for that? I think its ugly as sin and wouldn't consider spending $300, much less $5800.

Nothing like that was suggested in the sort.

Say what you want but that is a high worked AK tube. They bring that sort of money

No one is trying to belittle anyone here just showing you guys whats good with the real headies.

Its just when you make ridiculous statements, like "Mobius is not high end".

If you walked into any group of glass aficionados and made that statement, you would be laughed out of the room. Are they $5800 pieces of art? No. They're $300+ worth of scientific glass, meant to do the job of cooling/smoothing exceptionally well, smoke and vapor, with good form. $5800 is choosing form over function.

You have a VERY different concept of what high end glass is, than a lot of people. Doesn't mean you're wrong. Its subjective, at that point (Mobius, Vertigo, Wilson, ZOB, etc).

Not everyone is a fan of heady glass. I'm one of them. I think they're ugly as sin, with the exception of some of the fantasy based creations. But, I couldn't ever see buying one, to use it.

EDIT: The video was enjoyable to watch. He IS certainly an artist and a very gifted one. Just not my taste.

VAPOLITICS!
Nice video & impressive skills (any glass blowing video is addictive) & BIG work on that heady tube/beaker but not my taste ... I'm a scientific glass aficionado mos'def BUT I do like some very specific heady works like some JAG (all the art deco range), Darby Holm, Zack P., D-Wreck, Down Neck or Burtoni!

FLskwat,
My buddy got a stemline from a shop it was marked at an absurd $375, he got it for $300 OTD. I still think $300 was a rip off for a plane jane stemline. But hey, it's his money, not mine.

The only glass out there that is more overly hyped than SG is AK.

I knew I remembered Tea Party talking shit, like always, about SG in the Cloud thread (June 20, 2012, page 134). I somehow stumbled upon this thread today and loved watching the video of AK creating that tube. Then I noticed who started this thread...man he sure changed his mind about AK glass pretty fast! 21 days after claiming that AK is more over-hyped than SG and he's on here talking about how the piece above is worth $5800 and much nicer than any Mobius (or SG for that matter). Sure, it's some great work, but there's no way in hell I would ever spend that much on a glass tube even if I could afford it. I'd also rather use a Mobius Matrix perc in one of their bubblers or tubes than a worked tube that uses an annoying downstem anyday. Not to mention an SG Peyote Pillar or Stem/8...

For anyone curious, Jason Lee has been one of the top pipe makers for many, many years now. According to his glasspipes.org page, he has been working borosilicate since 1994, and has been known as a perfectionist, and a cutting edge artist and technician for many of those years. Jason Lee is one of, if not the, most talented glass artists out there, hands down. His prices may seem extreme to those who don't appreciate truly high end glass, but the demand among collectors is there, as shown by his ability to sell a doubler for 5 grand. The techniques applied in that bubbler particularly are incredibly complex and time consuming, and achieved perfectly. Almost the entire piece is window'd sections, and constructed masterfully.

AK's work as well, while not for everyone, is EXTREMELY time consuming and technically complicated. His style is not always appreciated, but his abilities to layer sections upon sections with some of the finest millies made are certainly not common.

Like anything, you get what you pay for. With truly high end glass, the differences may not be immediately apparent, but the build quality and style will be truly superior.
