How much do you pre-grind?

OhTheAgony

here for the chicks
Same here ^^

For me it's also part of the ritual that goes with every session, I've never even thought about pre-grinding until I saw this thread.

I think the only time i pre grind is if a need to be streamlined. For example, over the weekend i took the train down to the city to see the tree. So i only wanted to carry my iolite and a days worth of grind. I keep my grind in a mini tupperware container. So when its time to repack the bowl i just open the lid of the tupperware. Hold the ilolite bowl stem over the grind and just suck out the right amount into the bowl. This method works great for me.

I used to pre-grind probably around 1/2 of what i would buy, and put it into a smaller container.

This was my method, until i spilt all of my pre-ground into my carpet... Needless to say I grind as I go now.

i never pre-grind. i just tear off bits of herb using tweezers and drop into the bud vial. i do need to stir once after about 5 minutes (8 to 10 hits) to get another couple of dense hits.

I pregrind like a MFER.

I prefer this container for my pregrind:

Link that the guy sells here

I've had one for about two years I love it. Vitolo has a smaller size the same dude sells.

They are waterproof, and metallic (aluminum) so that no smell escapes/permeates whatsoever.

I've preground an enormous amount and stuffed them in here. It can hold about a QUARTER OUNCE minus the stems....but you have to stuff it like crazy. It's basically magic how much pregrind you can fit in here.

You can carry it around - imagine carrying a quarter around and it can fit in the coin pocket of your jeans.

Have you ever actually tried ground up material in your Budtoaster? As an ha owner I can say that the ha does a great job of vaping whole pieces of product, however, if you grind the material first you will be able to extract more Vapes faster because of the extra surface area -fewer clouds in number but bigger clouds in volume. By simply grinding your material the ha becomes a vapebong beast! I bet if you grind your sessions will get shorter but more intense. Also, If you grind and get choking clouds then maybe it would be worth looking into a waterpipe adaptor budvial to smooth out the experience. All you would have to do is make an extra long budvial, put a 45, or 90 degree bend in it and either put a real gong joint on it or slip some tubing on it so you get a nice seal (people do this with the solo's stems all the time).

I understand that the budtoaster is a labor of love that is specifically designed to meet your own vaping requirements, but it might benefit you to incorporate some of the suggestions from fellow fc members in order to appeal to a wider audience, especially since there are a lot more Vapes on the market (competition) then when you started the budtoaster. It would appear to me that vape models that are compatible with waterpipes are the most popular.

To get back to the main topic, I don't pregrind.

All you would have to do is make ...

exercise left to the reader, lol.

edit to add re: grinding -- when i tried that, all the ground up bud just rests in the bottom of the vial. there is better vapor extraction when the bud is distributed through the entire vial, i.e. bits and pieces stacked up. After the first stir, it's the same as grinding -- all the bud is in the bottom of the vial. But the first couple of hits with the distributed bud is best -- taste and density.

I guess it's fair enough to expect that the general public will modify and experiment with your budtoaster in order to customize it to better suit their needs. But why choose to ignore an obvious revenue stream by not designing/offering different budvial versions. I expect budvials will be just like solo stems - limited lifespan (due to the fragile nature of small glass pieces combined with clumsiness) and cheap(ish) enough for people to want to try different versions - two holes, four holes, gong, curved, straight, etc.

I never thought about the stirring of the budvial, ha's don't require stirring so that hasn't been a part of my routine for a while, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for your response - I'm sure that bit of info would certainly make the learning curve a lot shorter for those lucky enough to acquire a budtoaster once realeased to the public.

In my mind the Bud Toaster is complete as it is. i want to get to completion on this project as designed -- while it is still a sellers market.

can i stick my male joint in there?
i'm a pre-grinder too. i normally grind about 1/4 oz at a time and save it in an altoids tin and i store the rest of the fresh herbs in an old chinese tea tin i found at my mom's house.

This could come off as a pretty noob question, but I've always wondered and never bothered to ask. I usually pick up a quarter ounce at a time and spend a month or two going through it. Would there be any disadvantages to just grinding the whole stash up at once and having it ground whenever I want it? Cheers
I would stick to keeping your buds whole for preservation, and busting up only what you need for short term. Generally I bust 1-3g for daily usage, keep it in my room and keep my larger stash in mason jars hidden in another room. 1-3g works for me as I only vape once a day or less, and lasts quite long for me. Others that smoke all day long and stay lifted may need to grind up a larger amount for daily usage. Grinding your whole stash up and saving it long term will result in bigger loss of trichomes and much dryer plant material which is harsher when smoked or vaped. I'm sure some of this has already been said but I haven't looked through this entire thread, so if I repeated anything already stated, disregard it.

I usually only pre-grind if my flower is just a little bit on the moist side, allowing it to dry out a bit helps it vaporizer more easily. I have a mini 3-piece Cosmic grinder, and about 95% of the time i grind right before the sesh, just the perfect amount. I compare my grinding of flower to how one would grind high quality coffee beans.

I have a space case grinder that i love, i put about .5g inside and grind away

I also consider grinding as part of a prevaping workout, in the morning i see grinding as allowing the ssv to warm up before the wand gets filled

I also find that stirring every once in a while is akin to grinding, at least in the process and mind set of preparation.....then i enjoy

TNK,
I'm a big pre-grinder ... usually grind a quarter at a time using my 2-piece Space Case and then store it in a Pocket Box 00. This amount would typically last me 1-2 weeks and I have never noticed any loss of taste/potency.

To minimise the risk of accidentally spilling the whole lot, I move approx 1g from the Pocket Box to a small container each morning ... this also helps me keep my usage in check!

I use scissors. Grinders get clogged so fast. I have 4 grinders and don't use a single one anymore. I take a chunk and cut it in tiny pieces into the bowl. Sometimes i just put the whole chunk in the bowl and let it dry out by hit. Then I stir it and that breaks it down to powder. Hit some more.

About .6g's worth. in these little plastic containers, perfect size over the hole of the launch box.

want to do more at at ime but nugs are so pretty :)

was grinding enough to fill up a couple of aluminum pill containers, the ones with the screw on top and O ring. each container holding a different strain. still seemed to dry out (would take me a couple months to smoke that much). now only a nug or two are ground. no need to prep more. guess it all depends on how fast it will be used and everyone is different.

I go through like .1-.3g a day. I pre-grind, throw in enough for 1-3 trenches in a contact case. Sativas on the left, Indicas on the right. My MFLB, a couple of batteries, the little brush and my contact case all fit in a small pouch. Super convenient.

Damn... Vaping conserves pretty hardcore when I stop and think about it. .3g on days when I'm toking with a couple of friends is sweet ;)

+1 for contact cases. Started using it with the MFLB to hold pregrind also, just kind of stuck with me.
