The fine screen not very rigid so I wouldn't use them alone
Adding a fine screen on the top helped me keep the valve clean, but they get dirty fast, a lot of stuff get trapped in.
hi Cash. Got my fine screens yesterday.

First, let me say that when I fill the solid valve chamber, I only lay down enough ground herb to cover the bottom so that I can't see light thru the layer. No more (with some occasional exceptions :)). I use temps 175/347 - 190/374 C/F, so that I can focus on the flavor, and to keep things euphoric*. Higher temps and bigger chamber loads are mostly used when vaping the collected tailings from previous sessions.

On to the fine screens- I kept the bottom screen (the screen the herb lays on) normal, and put a fine screen on the filling chamber insert. Worked fine. Then, after a few pulls, I noticed that the fine screen was beginning to become slightly mishapen. In an effort to stop that from happening further I sandwiched the fine screen between two normal screens.

This has stopped the mishaping, and a pleasant surprise is that the bottom normal screen facing the herb in the sandwich is catching most of the "grit" (which can be brushed away), keeping the middle/fine and top/normal screens very clean.

An occasional run of hot air (up to 230C) thru the screens while no herb's in the chamber helps keep the resin from building up, but eventually there'll be iso time. I've got enough fine and normal screens to make two complete "sandwiches", so I may buy an additional filling chamber insert ($10, delivered) so that each sandwich can have its own insert and make things a little more convenient.

All this said though, I just got the things, and like you said, they may become more of a hassle than they're worth.

BTW, that fine screen weave is so fine that it looks more like a porous aerospace material than a screen. Kinda fragile. And I'm using the three bottom fine screens (without the center holes) to filter my MFLB, and soon, a T1/Rev/Ev.

cheers

*yesterday, after vaping some sage n sour (delicious pink grapefruit taste on exhale), I had an epic session of laugh-till-yer-cheeks-hurt, merely remembering scenes from Tralier Park Boys. (edit: thinking about how I was laughing yesterday makes me laugh now- vicious cycle!! :))

As promised, here's the result of rinsing a used volcano bag, with the darkest inch closest to the valve left out, in 99% iso. I filtered the iso wash first thru a Braun Aromaster KFG 4, and then thru a small cut-off corner (less paper to absorb the stuff) of a Melita bamboo coffee filter. The only reason that I used these specific filters is because they happened to be laying around. It came out nice and clean (for reclaim).

It's pretty good stuff, with a definite sativa spin, especially compared to the darker stuff that collects in the valve. Can't wait to try it through my ThermoVape revolution, as soon as a required part gets here. In the meantime the liquids pad for the cano's working pretty fine. :smug:

cheers y'all

Hi all-

Just wanted to give you a visual on the difference between the normal and fine screens...
(click for full-size)

I've now got my second insert for the solid valve, and have two normal-fine-normal screen sandwiches for convenience. Loving the benefit of the sandwich- the vapor seems just a little easier on the throat now- perhaps due to fewer particles?

I keep the bottom screen normal, so that the airflow's not impeded there. I only throw an additional (fine) screen on the bottom when I'm vaping keef.

cheers all

Careful guys remember that too many air restrictions can act as a heat sync, its free flowing air/convection that makes volcano so popular, i often have to use to normal screens though when using a full melt goo/kief or bho but then i just turn the heat down a bit to accommodate the extra heat build up

AS for saving bags, if one has been on for long enough ( like a month of heavy use ) then yes you'd be surprised at how much you can get off, i usually just cut off the bit near the mouthpiece and save them in a jar for a rainy day. I then can boil in milk to make bhang, or heat lightly over the volcano and then scraping gently with a razor blade ( gently does it lol )

really good point, chant.

I should mention that when I load the solid valve, I only lay down enough herb to just cover the bottom screen- and no more. The bottom screen used is normal, so no additional resistance there.

If you're packing a deep, finely-ground load then the added resistance of a n-f-n sandwich on top (esp. if it's not clean) could create an issue.

btw, I find the solid-valve better for small, shallow loads- where the flexibility of the insert is an advantage. Larger loads love the wide-diameter of the easy valve. Yes, I have both.

cheers all

ps I hear that there's not a lot of love for the volcano at FC. That's okay, just as long as whatever it is that you're using isn't creating combustion. Live long and vapor. \\//

I used my official Concentrate pad today for the first time. I have used many makeshift pieces, but was for some OCD reason... was keeping my pad "pristine".
I heated up, and drained residue from over a dozen Omicron cartridges today. The carts had all been used many times over, and so needless to say, what came out was thick, black sludge (still full melt mind you!).. just tarry.
I decided to spread this thick honey like paste onto my Volcano's pad. I spread it evenly so there was a visible layer.
I did two light bags at 377.. then decided to crank it up.
I went to 414
I just finished the second bag at 414... the second being thicker than the first.
I turned off the Volcano... I was very medicated.
I took a 30 minute break, then went to check the pad (now cool)
There was no black oil spread around, but there was a darker oily appearance where the oil was.
It was cool to the touch... and ... it is still tacky!
This is promising... guys, you will excuse me- I'm going back in!

V.- are you using a solid or ez valve pad?
I've been vaping the reclaim I made, documented a few posts before, and found you can get quite a few hits until they kinda fade away. Holding the pad up to the light can help you see if there's more in there. Going to try some bubble this weekend, n see how that works.

Oh, and another fun little s'periment I'm trying is to vape some weed in the 160-170C euphoric range in the morning, and then the same weed in the evening at 190-200C for more cbds and relaxation. (pushing the two green triangle buttons simultaneously will switch between F and C).

enjoy

I am using easy valve today, for this vape.... so I could have larger "spread" room. The stuff was pretty thick.
I on occasion, vape a couple of bowls/chambers/wands/stems/bags in the "green zone" first thing in the day.. and come back after a bit to "deepen" my medicative state. I don't wait till evening though for CBD time... I am "browning" my ABV before noon!
I see what you mean about holding the pad to the light.

I was starting my day with the higher temps, but nothing was getting accomplished. :smug:

New technique!
I have a jar of 99% Iso I keep to throw old Omicron carts in.. and I also use it to rinse BHO vials etc.
I drip this black liquid onto the concentrate pad....
I let it evap for a few hours, and drip more.
I repeat till the pad is a golden color, and tacky, yet dry.
Put THAT in your Volcano and vape it!

I've had my digit 5-6 years, daily use. The silver shell has a ding or two, but she's functioning 100% from what I can tell. Maybe an opening and cleaning of the internals may improve her a bit. Dunno.

Is your unit still under warranty? Best of luck getting her fixed, and back into action. :)

hello,

i just bought a used volcano on ebay.
now i see different versions of the volcano on google.
one with a black ring on the top and one with a white'ish one.

whats the difference?
can you tell the age of the volcano because of the ring?
here ist an example:
white: http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/images/4/2012/01/medium_7cddd23dba2fccb852bc8adeb5dfff4b.jpg
black: http://destronum.de/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/v/o/vol.jpg

next question is how do you clean the cano?

Mr.Sifter,

The color wont matter.. and dont analyze age by this.. the older model could have been purchased later!

turn unit off
turn upside down.. shake and tap lightly...
the place wand of Dust Buster or other small vacuum around the top for just one sweep, while unit is still upside down.
for body- use windex on a paper towel, followed by water on a paper towel(barely damp)... then a dry paper towel.
The instructions for cleaning the valves etc, vary and involve Iso usually.

Thank you for this, I was wondering how to clean the volcano unit itself.

Is it worth getting oil to use it in the volcano?
I have never tried hash oil before, so will it be significantly higher than I would be with dank weed?
& will it be saving

I don't know your financial details... or your ease of access.
I use the liquid pad, when I have bounty....
when I make my own, or when I evaporate washes from other oil applications.
It is an exhilarating "medicating' experience, but whether it is right for you....
...is for you to say.
The oils will be used up, and you will wish for more... but I guess rhe same applies to herb
If you have easy access, and finances are good... go for it... you've nothing to lose!
