Gizmodo guru 'atarantola' reckons the Pax – due for release on August the 1st – is worth waiting for, and much better than the Da Vinci (that I had shortlisted before reading his review). The Vaporfection MiVape – also due for release next August – is another contender. But there could be a problem justifying the $300 price tag.

ive been watching the mivape for a while as well, i think it will be a good contender sense they have really taken there time with it to ensure a quality product (lets hope) but there is literally nothing on the product yet just a picture so that would be a huge gamble to pre-order just yet imo. over all i think the pax will be a better. for cost and efficiency wise
I'm really excited to try both ... Knowing me I'll probably cave in and be unable to resist buying both! (vaporizer purchasing "problem" in my manic phases ...)
Maybe a Persei with a universe adapter too ... And definitely a cloud!!!

SM - just so i'm clear - the stem on the mouthpiece goes into the body of the PAX; how does this stem interface with the unit? can you tell?
The reason I'm focusing on this spot is that I'm concerned with the "sensing" aspect as well as the button-click action taking on contaminants. I'm concerned with this area for both reliability and being able to get the unit *FULLY* cleaned as other posters were asking about. How dirty does stem piece on the mouthpiece get? Does the outside surface of the metal mouthpiece stem get dirty? or just the vapor path?

so you want something that will eventually fail, but you can fix it, and then have it fail again. lol sounds like windows.
How is that worse than something that will eventually fail, but you can't fix it yourself so you have to send/take it somewhere to get fixed, then have it fail again?

From what I can tell all the switch components are not exposed to vapor. They are all on the outside of the mouthpiece part. They mouthpiece goes over the vapor path., so nothing in the vapor path comes in to contact with the switches.

apple parts are user replaceable if you know what youre doing. as for a vape that's like that. unless the battery is soldered in, then it should be replaceable.
What has Apple got to do with it? I'm not arguing that the battery shouldn't be user replaceable, because I think it should be in all of these devices. I was challenging your suggestion that having something that will eventually fail but that he can fix was somehow worse.

In the 7 years I've really started to actually understand how Windows works, I've had it blue screen three times on me: twice for overclocking stuff, and once because my dumb ass installed the wrong video drivers. It's really NOT that hard not to mess it up, fanboy. Also, lol @ apple parts being user replaceable. I built the current computer I'm using entirely from scratch, and have replaced multiple parts with incredible ease.

Actually there is an advantage to having an internal battery; regular cylindrical batteries take up more space for the same energy density. Flat lithium batteries (like in r/c vehicles) can let you have a smaller overall device and is obviously ideal for a flat device or oval-shaped.
The key is how much it's going to cost to replace, if it's under say $30 or so I think I'd be happy

The Puffit is doing battery service replacement for $59. I imagine the PAX will be about the same. Just a guess.
That's only part of the cost, isn't it? They probably aren't paying for shipping (in either direction). There is also the loss of use while it's away being serviced.

So I wouldn't put much into posts on that site. I mean it very well could be the case but I want to hear it from someone other than gizmodo, because their bread and butter is posting glowing reviews for products they get money for, and bad reviews of products that don't.

Well to be honest $60 would make more sense for the Pax... $60 to replace the battery in a $140 device is a little crazy imo considering these batteries cost at the very most $20...

I was seriously considering pre-ordering the Pax this morning, however they only ship to US and Canada. I've contacted them to see if they will ship to Australia for me ... shall let you all know the response when I hear back from them in case there are some other Aussies looking at ordering.

G'day everyusername. The best place to buy a vaporiser in Australia is australianvaporizers.com.au. From personal experience, their service is excellent, and they'll be stocking the Pax soon after release on August 1st.

Thanks for letting me know Hai_Rypo_T'head, I've purchased from AustralianVaporizers a few times in the past and they are certainly excellent, each time I've bought from them I've received a package the next day. I had no idea they would be stocking the Pax so quickly - I hope they have Aust power plugs (:

I must say last time I ordered a mflb it came super quick. They haven't however upgraded to the latest model which makes me sad, the extra postage is justifiable for the glass stem and other bonus items. Just my input
I would however order the puffit with no hesitation, I think it would be a good time to become an official Australian retailer because fuck $40 international postage. Glad to see that the pax will be stocked soon but.
Is there any information regarding alternatives to the charging dock? A USB cable would be sweet.

The charging dock is currently the only way to charge the unit. Not sure if they plan on making any other kinds of charging adapters.
I did just discover something interesting. You do not have to take off the mouthpiece to charge the unit. You can simply turn the unit upside down and place it down on the charger. When the mouthpiece is in the off/recessed position it still allows access to the charging prongs. It actually makes it easier, and saves some time to not have to take the mouth piece off.
