Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

OKcomputer, the residue you are trying to remove is not water soluble. :science:
The other component of 50% (70%, 90%) ISO is water. As suggested using higher strength ISO (overnight soak and aggitation) does the trick.

Or, get some Everclear 190 proof (95% grain alcohol)... Some feel better about using Ethyl alcohol, if you are going to collect the wash and evap it for later use. :2c:

Another hint on cleaning. A hot, spent load will eject more easily from a tube and leave a pretty clean bowl and screen. Heat the bowl, and do a short draw just before blowing the spent contents out, works much better than doing the same with a cold bowl.

+++

Ted, we have used the same size, small muslin bag, for waste tobacco,
from the same supplier since Day 1 of Purple-Days. :buzz:
The idea came from using the small bag that kid's gum comes in...
the little 'Miner's Gold' ('Santa's Coal') gum bags...
But, I doubt that they are consistent weight (probably close though) as the draw string length may vary from one bag to the next.

+++

Screens: I don't clean mine, obviously, with hundreds of new screens at hand, I just replace screens.
You can cut your own replacement screens with common scissors.

Access screen material from your local tobacco shop. Cut a disk into 1/4s... ie. cut the pie in half then cut the halves by two. You now have four pieces with a right angle to work from... hold a straight screen edge up to the bowl, count how many wires wide you need your screen, cut a strip that wide. Count the same number of wires on this strip and cut a square. Nibble away at the corners of the square (pre-school style) to make a round (doesn't have to be perfect) screen. Pretty simple, once you have the hang of it... No, this isn't how I make screens, but, when I had an old Eterra style unit this is how I made my own new screens.

As mentioned, with a well fitting screen you do not need the clips and the clips restrict the airflow a bit ... I must manufacture with clips to produce as bullet-proof an item as possible, I'm sure you (the consumer) understand why. As mentioned, without the clips a screen can be dislodged, but after the first bowl, or two, it's stuck in there pretty well and won't just blow out. I never use clips in my own tubes.

Thanks for the replies guys. Obviously I could just weigh my bag but didn't want to empty it haha. I just needed a rough estimate anyways :)

Also Tom - thanks for the reminder of that Miners gold bubble gum - I forgot all about that

I think i read in the thread you can use drinking alcohol to clean the tubes? Does the alcohol then absorb the THC? Ive been using Vodka for mine -have had no clogging issues but if there is no THC absorption then I might as well go with something cheaper.

Plus I can then drink the vodka tonight during the free UFC :brow:

It is funny how quickly I settled into a routine with this thing. Every time I smoke a tube it is the same process...

I use the straw method to load the stem
I suck hard and then just tap in the excess around the tube, if some drops off so be it.
SOMETIMES ill then suck up a tiny amount of crystal to top it off (not during work hours tho!)
Then I take one hit through my bong.
Sit the PD down normally, and put the stem and let it sit there while I casually take a pull off it until it is done.
Rinse and repeat.

My brother on the other hand - completely opposite. hates the water bong. Likes to put his tube in and finish it as quickly as possible.

Ted the 'stuff' you are after is soluble in alcohol, either ISO or Grain (ethyl) alcohol, also in fats and oils which is handy for cooking. Check out the cooking section for of these forums http://www.fuckcombustion.com/viewforum.php?id=17 ;)

So short answer to your question, yes you can clean with Vodka and of course the Vodka is suitable to drink. ISO is suitable for cleaning but not for drinking.

Problem with vodka is the high water content making it a less efficient cleaner. Everclear brand, grain alcohol, in 190 proof, 95% Alc. By Vol. distilled from 100% select grains, is your best bet for consumption, IMO, not available in all States...

But be aware 'normal' vodka is gonna be about 80 proof, 40% Alc. By Vol. vs. 95%... The Everclear bottle clearly states, "WARNING!! OVERCONSUMPTION MAY ENDANGER YOUR HEALTH" their caps lock... So don't tip the bottle up and . . . this stuff is very flammable also, so use caution...
you can dillute with distilled water to a 'normal' vodka strength , after cleaning too.

With those warnings out of the way it is the best cleaner I have encountered, it is a solvent for what you are after and it is meant for oral consumption, just mix it sparingly.

Do any of you guys know of people selling glass tubes for the PD anymore? I know there used to e an etsy store with some up but his storefront is empty now, just wondering if there are any still available, be them with water diffusion or not

Pammy told me Clear Dome wrote her about a week ago, :) probably a response to her Halloween cards.

I sent him a batch of vapor tips a while back and Pammy says he has been working on a new tip mount. ;)
Detachable tips, for cleaning. Not sure what he is up to, but he is a creative person, that's for sure.

I spoke with a few folks about doing glass and steel, before Alex approached us. It's not as easy as it would seem. But hey, he wanted a shot at it and has made some remarkable stuff. I don't think he was happy with the steel to glass joint, it's obvious he is trying to make the best product he can... all the knowledgeable glass men, said this steel to glass, was the issue.

I look forward to seeing what he comes up with... he hinted at a few things a while back, to me. Sounded promising. But the fact is, he's a glass artist, visually very impressive. The tech stuff will come with time, his artistic taste and talents can't be rushed or learned from a book. He is unique.

You can contact him, but he speaks French, not English. Keep e-mails simple if you expect a reply.

ETSY.com became a sales problem for all 'glass' folks so the ETSY site being down is not CD's fault.

You can look at a small, early sample of his stuff here
http://www.purple-days.com/ClearDome.html
Look for his e-mail address on the page.

Oh believe me, I've looked at all his work, so glad to hear he is attempting to do more :D

He's a fantastic artist, no worries about time, as we all now, great art takes time, there are no shortcuts.

Welcome to the family!

On another note, has anyone tried incense in the copper cup? I've tried scraping it off of the stick type and I don't seem to get much of a smell. Any tips are welcome! Thanks in advance.

Hi, all. This is my first post on here but I've had my myrtle purple-days for about six months now. I use it daily and I couldn't be happier with it. Well worth the investment :peace:

I too had seen Clear Dome's Etsy page last year and was intrigued. Glad to hear he's working on some new glass, I'll be very interested to see what he comes out with. The detachable tip thing was actually the one feature I had wished he offered. If he does end up selling products with glass on glass PD bowl attachments I don't think I'll be able to pass that up.

I recently picked up a small assortment of incense sticks and started doing this. Some types don't seem to give off too much of an aroma but others are much stronger. Just try some different ones. I've also been using an entire stick at a time.

I like the tip about not using the clips with the screens. Hadn't ever tried that.

I also recommend emailing Cleardome if you're interested in his work. I sent him an email a while back inquiring about what he's working on and only very recently heard back from him. Just like people say--he's still making great glass but is so busy it can take him a looong time to answer emails. Nice guy though. :2c:

Here are a couple of pics of the contest PD. This is definitely one of those "pictures don't do it justice" sort of times (at least not with my photo skills)--it's a beautiful piece of wood. Thanks again Tom and Pammy!!! :D

I see why everybody likes putting the PD though a small tube. It like, kicks it into turbo.

This thing rocks

those inline water filters look sick! just wish the connector wasn't proprietary so you could use them with other vapes/glass; prob costs too much to justify a pd-only accessory.

whoa thats some sick looking glass  about how long is the waiting time for a new pd? I'm sure it varies, but I'm just wondering if one of you owners can tell me your experience with this. thanks in advance

Yeah I think they're pretty slick too, I would find this a lot more comfortable to use with the PD than the 12" Luke Mini 5-arm to 10-tree I've been playing with since I plugged the PD in three two days ago :)

I'm not crazy about inverting the PD, I worry about putting pressure on it in the weird angles you have to negotiate with in order to plug it into a downstem, blahblahblah...

These are really nice, I think the PD is a very timeless design and getting a piece of glass that was designed for it is a pretty sweet homage.

Either way, the PD itself is just awesome...I had recently given my bag blower away to a friend once I found out the PD shipped, and had been using the MFLB in the interim. I think the box is amazing, but it shines as a portable. Needless to say the PD has the perfect amount of horsepower for the track I'll be running it on :) Great piece of ingenuity.

Anyway, here are the rest from Alex. Oooo I almost went on a double post here to get a clean start to the images so people don't have to scroll through my inane rambling. Peace!

It's been a while, it's nice to read all your names and comments again.
For what it's worth on the whole cleaning the vapor tube and particularly the screens:
I have had my PD for over a year and my screens look like they did day one. All I do is what I've already read here: clear the tubes hot, I rotate tubes about every 20 or so loads, then soak the dirty tube in the provided cleaning bottle with 99% ISO. Oh, and I like it like James Bond or James Brown...shaken.
BTW, CD...damn, thems glass looks fine.
