Congrats to all!.. reminds me, what ever happened with the last contest? I never did see my prize for that. :/

Mandelbrot asks, "what ever happened with the last contest?" . . . funny you ask here and now... did you win ? Did you not receive a prize? If you won, why not ask Pammy? By e-mail... Since that's how you had to claim the prize... We run honest contests, please don't imply otherwise...we did receive a $8.95 postage package back... Pammy confirms addresses before shipping, addressee unknown... might be you, but I'm not chasing phantom prize winners... I've already lost that $8.95 . . . might be you, pretty likely . . .

Haha I like the picture of the PD hitting a PD. Nice. I'll be sure to enter the next contest, it looks like fun. :)

Tom, I posted on the forum because I was curious if anyone had received a prize yet. I didn't hassle Pammy about it because I knew she was ill. @Ripbongs420 thanks for your "help" but I unpublished my photos after the contest closed.

Nope, the returned package was not yours, but we have heard from the missing winner... Pammy is sending another bowl your way. Who knows where the first one ended up?

I apologize, I'm not sure how I must have missed one? Sorry and Congrats. Just trying to help. I know Tom is too busy to check so many pages back. Hope you understand. Too bad I just wasted more time. Sorry again :/ Still confused on why you said you removed them after the contest ended, as I saw them lastnight then minutes later disappeared.

was his entry.
Just got lost in the mail we think. We didn't do delivery confirmation on the bowls. We are sending a new bowl his way...

Hi Tom, Pammy and everyone. Been off the forum for a bit dealing with some personal stuff but it's nice to see the results of the contest and Placetime's entry is the definitive winner in my book too.
On my end it's nice to be recognized for the "creepy" entry. Was no where as inspired as some of the others.
Hope Pammy gets relief from her asthma....
later and congrats to all the winners...

WOW! That's awesome! Thanks Tom and Pammy!!! :D This was a hilarious contest, imho. I hope that these wacky pics provided some amusement for Pammy while she was not feeling well.
Congrats to the other winners!

placetime,
Hi!

After lurking in this thread for a few weeks, I decided to take the plunge and purchase a Purple Days. Prior to that I had only combusted, but decided to try vaporizing as the experience sounded interesting and I wanted to avoid the negative health effects associated with smoking.

After using the PD for a couple of weeks, I must say that I love it. The customer service experience provided by Tom and Pammy was truly second-to-none, and the unit itself works remarkably well after taking a couple of days to learn the proper draw technique. Tried combusting again yesterday, and it just tasted gross and harsh in comparison. The flavor, potency (even with mids) and efficiency definitely has me believing that this was an awesome purchase, and I owe a big thank-you to the FC community for turning me on to this wonderful device.

BUT! I have one question. After looking through this tread pretty extensively (OK - the first 25 pages in addition to dozens of the more recent ones), it seems like nobody has much trouble keeping the screens of their vapor tubes clean. Unfortunately, I'm not having the same kind of luck.

After soaking my tubes in 70% Isopropyl alcohol for various lengths of time (a few hours for one soak session, overnight for another, and double-overnight for yet another), with a fairly high amount of agitation (shaking the bottle every few hours or so to help the cleaning process), I still can't seem to get the screens totally clean. In fact, at least a dozen of the holes in each screen are still totally clogged, mostly around the perimeter. I even tried poking around with a toothpick (very gently, I might add) at the screen itself to see if I could loosen anything up, but no dice.

Do I need stronger alcohol? I could've sword that I read in somebody's post that 50% Isopropyl was plenty strong, so I'm surprised to see 70% having such little success.

Other than this minor debacle (which I have a feeling will be solved soon enough), the vaping experience has been amazing so far, and I'm glad I was able to convince my wife that a "blind" $180 investment (neither of us had ever vaped, and she's a 15+ year combuster) was worth diving into. She wholeheartedly agrees now, too.

Thanks in advance for cleaning tips!

Glad you like it OKComputer. Happy vaping!

70% iso should be enough to loosen up the gunk.

Maybe use a pin to poke the screen holes? It's not all that delicate in there.

I have in the past taken my screens out to clean them- you can just poke it out from behind with a wooden skewer- it comes out along with tiny circlips which hold it in place. To get it back in you just insert the screen and push the circlip back in and into place (you can even leave this out when you put it back if you want, for increased airflow- it's how I have mine- but you have to be aware when you blow through to clear the stem that you don't blow away the screen)

Welcome to the family OKcomputer :) Always nice to have another Radiohead fan around.

While I agree with WatTyler that 70% ISO should be enough, switching to 90% or stronger certainly can't hurt. I would try a stronger alcohol before removing any screens. Personally, I soak my stems for 48 hours in 90%. I also run cold water through the stems for a few minutes afterwards, and then blow through them while wet. Sometimes a few bits of plant matter only come out during this final blowing.

How fine do you grind you bud? Grinding to a powder like consistency can definitely cause premature and severe clogging of the screen. Also - how long did you wait until your first cleaning? Tom mentioned once that letting too much material buildup can make it difficult to unclog, even impossible, but I think you would have to wait for a really long time for any clogging to be permanent. Good luck!

I've only had my PD for 2 months, and in that time, I've cleaned the stems once. Just toss in the bottle, throw in some 90% iso, and shake for a few minutes. any plant material remaining is simply cosmetic, and will have a negligible effect on air flow.

OKcomputer, I find that you can puff on the empty stem like a cigar for a bit (and then blow out any bits that dried up) to clean it to a degree. After that you can do the same and poke/scrape gently around with a pin. Beyond that remove, clean & replace the screen.

I also like using an Allen wrench that is small enough to fit into the tip of the PD stem and smash a dime-sized round screen into the tip so (with effort) it forms a form-fitting shuttle cock. This 'shuttle cock' can be removed, flipped and placed in with the dome facing upwards. The dome clogs less, gets better airflow, allows for adjustable bowl size, and can be replaced after being cleaned in a solvent without being reshaped much.

I hope this helps, as it reinvented my PD in a big way. ;)

Can you describe the shuttle-method more in depth/pictures? I'm a bit confused

Also, so glad there are a handful of radiohead pd'ers :)

Regarding Progress' method: Prog explained this to me in chat IIRC (a while back) and I took a stab at it since it sounded like an interesting innovation. I've included some pics below; I'm not exactly sure if this is what Progress' "dome screens" look like because I haven't seen his set-up. Prog, hopefully you can comment on whether or not my follow through was successful (it certainly works for me) and/or similar to what you do (if this is the case my success is a function of your good description ).

Basically, find an appropriate screen for vaping (chemistry and mesh-size). Cut to an appropriate size and form into a dome that will fit into the PD stem.

DSCF0127.jpg

Insert the new dome so the cavity faces inward (towards mouthpiece) and the dome out. The screen can be adjusted easily with a poking tool (to insert its easiest IME to do so from the mouth piece end). Here's a shot of a small "bowl" set-up.

And bigger:

Prog, let me know if I betrayed your design or am going with the (increased) flow

That looks like the same concept.

All I do is get the dime-sized round pipe screens and use a small Allen wrench to push the center of the screen carefully into the tip of the PD stem and mash it against the walls into a neat dome. Slide out, flip, carefully insert, and shabam! :D

My tool is a little rounded, so the dome has more of a peak.

Adjustable bowl size, better airflow, and less frequent cleaning (due to the crevices around the perimeter of the dome).

Thanks for the pics.

I really like this domed screen idea. My tolerance is so low that I often don't finish a stem, so a smaller bowl size would be perfect for my needs. What size screens would you recommend?

Nebulous,
I tried going at the screen with a very thin needle, and I think that's going to do the trick. When I tested it however, the tubes were dry. I have a feeling that I'll get the results that I'm looking for by soaking the tubes overnight, rinsing them off, blowing them out, needling out any remaining clogged holes, rinsing and blowing again. Sounds like more of a process than it really is . I'll have to hunt around to find some 90% iso, as the rubbing alcohol at the closest store was only 50%.

As for why the screens got so clogged with iso-resistant material in the first place, I'm not sure. Perhaps the mids I'm putting through the PD have higher resin content than the average?

At any rate, thanks for the warm welcome and the excellent advice.

Here might be a weird question, Is the size of the small muslin bag across vapes the same? Does anyone know what they weigh by any chance?

Also a week in and I haven't used anything BUT the PD. Love it. Have had zero issues with it. I can not believe how simple it is. I work from home and it has made a nice addition to my desk. It is so easy to use and always ready to go. Perfect.

ted,
Too late, and not really a costume, but it was on my SD card and damnit you're all gonna see it!
