Anytime, I used to own the basic version of the sphere. I was contemplating buying the xl but your issue with the wires is off putting. How long does it take to get to temp? Are the first few pulls wispy?

If by wispy you mean weak, invisible vapor then yes but you can improve things by preheating the chamber. It takes 12-15 minutes to get into working temperature (set to about 8). I find it best to let the injector heat on top of an empty chamber. I load it when everything is ready (careful hot!). IMO this helps to get going faster, and then the herborizer goes on and on... I get more than few good hits per load.

The smell I am concerned with is detectable when pulling through an empty chamber with the injector in working temperature range. It is also obvious when smelling the electrical connections on the top end of the injector, even when cold. I think it was far worse at first.

This is a let down, especially considering the high praise the herborizer earns for flavor. I am well aware that smell and taste are highly subjective therefore I'm interested in other user opinions.

Cheers.

Really appreciate the feedback dimStar, thanks!! I didn't think it took so long to heat up (I thought more like 10 mins) but it makes sense based on my past experience with the basic injector.

I can empathize with your testing by vaping without any herbs in the bowl. I used to do this with the Solo to detect any "foul" odours or tastes. Perhaps your issues are just "burnin in" a new vape? Subjective taste/smell isn't the issue here....you should be getting pure, clean, tasty, vapour! Please let us know what Sebastian retorts.

Still waiting for Sebastian's response.

Meanwhile I had a session with a friend's Vapocane B (29 Euros here in Germany) using the heat retention method (as in indirect heating). The Vapocane's vapor taste and quality are superb! It doesn't produce such thick clouds as the big hitters, nevertheless the vapor is super smooth, tasty and clean. In this aspect it is much superior to the Herborizer.

I'm inclined to think I made the wrong choice.

Oh well.

How does one minimize damage? Ebay?

You could try ebay, or list in the classifieds here on the forum. First definitely wait to hear back from Sebastian and i'm certain he'll make things better. Maybe you genuinely have a problem with it, and it can be fixed or replaced and then who knows, maybe this could become your new favourite vape! I had different reasons for selling my basic injector sphere (sold here in the classifieds), as I stumbled upon the vhw at the same time, and still had an extreme. I didn't have the variable voltgage adapeter and felt it too forever to come to heat and then the abv wouldn't get very brown. Plus the first bunch of hits were non-existent.

Please keep us updated.

Sebastian from Herborizer emailed me back saying the smell is normal for a new unit and should disappear after 2-3 times the unit is used. I am unconvinced and suspect all Herborizers smell to some extent, I doubt a well used unit will work without giving any baked insulation odors.

Well, the store took the Herborizer back for the cost of a heating element, I think this is very fair.

I got a nice percolator beaker and the Vapocane (original "A" model with thicker glass) instead. Using the "heat retention" method (i.e. indirect heating using a high-power butane torch) it produces the tastiest and smoothest vapor possible. I couldn't be happier.

Cheers y'all.

Hey dimstar, glad that all worked out for you, in a way. Not a total loss, and bummer that the herbo is like that. That's one thing I honestly never noticed on my basic injector whatsoever, so an off-smell or break in or anything.

Thanks for sharing this experience and see ya around the forum!

I never had issues with plastic smells....so you should contact Seba as Vape already told you.
The color change is unavoidable and it is fine, with the XL you should be careful to turn it up only while using it, leaving it there and on max power without drawing is risky and could melt all the shit up, maybe it already happened a bit since you are having these smell problems?
I bought the fixed temp model in order to avoid these problems too, since the seller warned me at the time that once he had forgot to reduce the temp once the session was over, and had to replace the injector since it melted all the cables.

Vape: I personally always wait 15-20 minutes before the first draw, I get home, turn it on, meanwhile clean the bowl and change the water in the sphere, and then I'm set. After 15 minutes the draws are already vapey and you can definitely see it. Love terpenes :D

I own an herborizer XL that i bought on a french grower forum, i never had any smell issue.
The whole setup give me big tasty clouds after 15min heat up, it can lead to a very dark brown material , but even at full temps , it never combust anything.
I vaped some home made bubble hash last week and it did fine.
I have forgoten it a couple of time at 3 o'clock for a few hours and wires didn't melt.
I'm quite happy with this vape but i would'nt have bought it at full price(i actually did have it with tube , sphere and whip adapter for the price of a "tube xl unit").
Glass work is classic but well made.
The bowl is very large so its a great group vape with the sphere+whip setup, you just stir a little sometimes and it can last for hours!
4 years ago , it was one of the best . Now that there is the cloud , LSV , Vrip wand, i m not sure it is such a good deal. The design is sometime annoying: to much wire and glass that can break, vertical length make the gravity center goes up and the weight of the injector and the wire on the upper part doesn't make it better ; i just get paranoid every time a cat get close to the unit.
Since i live with 2 dumb excited cats now , it became my sunday afternoon vape and i'm constantly carefull during a session.
At a point that i really think about getting a plenty or SSV or LSV in addition to my mlfb/PD/herbo setup just to make long session from one bowl without the paranoid state of mind, and keep the herbo for partys.

Oh yeah, I get what you are saying xD my dog near the sphere is a total paranoia adder, luckily he kinda learned he shouldn't get too close to the whip as that is the only thing that could lead to an accident...I have mine on a little table near the sofa and the power cord it's not exposed so it is quite a safe spot, but I can see your concern...

I'm surprized none of you guys had any such concerns. When I returned my unit to the store (thanks again to the nice folks in verdemftnochmal.de) they said it smelled "normal"... not that the smell was not there.

Going back to the Vapocane (retained heat extraction i.e. no inhaled butane) I was delighted at how delicious the vapor tasted and smelled. My portable unit is a Vaporgenie and I prefer the taste of it (a woody aroma and traces of butane) to the reek of hot silicone wire insulation. Other than that, they do not make my nose run like the Herborizer did (alergy?)

I guess it is like food - neither do all people like the same food nor can they tolerate it (as my newly developped lactose intolerance teaches me).

Enjoy your Herborizers :)

It can't be normal when my basic injector didn't have the smell, nor do many other herbo owners. But I empathize with your decision to move past this vape.

I have accidentally left mine on overnight, never smelled any plastic burning unless I allow the power cable to rest on the injector. I have never tasted a more pure vapor than with my herborizer and I've tried almost every vape mentioned and more. I have used mine on full blast for hash and still never got a plastic taste. It melted the ice really fast but tasted great. Before I ever used it, I did turn mine up to high for about a half hour before I loaded one up in case there was anything to burn off. I have used mine daily for nearly 3 years and am honestly surprised anyone has anything bad to say about it. To each their own. :science:

Totally agree with you about the smell and taste, honestly, without cats in my super tinny flat, this thing would be perfect for me. Another good point that i didn't mentionned is the customer service! Sebastien really take care of his customers. I had a little oil build up in my injector when i forgot to shut down it for a whole night and he agreed to clean it and replace the plug that became loosy(my fault) for barely nothing. This why i love to deal with craftsman. Way better than big company ( the PD team miss me so much ... ) .

I'd like to go for this vaporizer. I'd buy the basic injector if ever I could afford it. Do you advice rather the basic injection system or may the XL be somehow a better choice for someone wanting to vaporize tobacco, tea and other substances ?

Do you think it is better to buy a 18.8 mm with an adapter, or directly buy the 14.5 mm injector ?

Tor, I guess it depends on the glass you already have, if you want to buy the injector alone, you should have a bong to use it with.
As for the basic or the XL I guess it's just about what you want to vaporize, if you want to use concentrates or different herbs is better to get the XL since hash melts at higher temperature than the basic one provides, and with adaptable temp you can get the right spot of different herb materials, that vaporize at different temperatures.

Having owned both the herborizer sphere (basic) and the Cloud, I MUCH prefer the Cloud.

Having owned both the herborizer sphere (basic) and the Cloud, I MUCH prefer the Cloud.

Could you say why?

If it has anything to do with taste, my question would be whether the Cloud has any silicone parts (o-rings, wire insulation etc) in the air path.

The Herborizer manufacturer told the local shop where I had it bought that *some* (* indicates my own scepticism and is not part of the original message) silicone may off-gas when exposed to high temperatures. Supposedly the offending heating element was changed to one that does not behave that way.

I guess I am unusually sensitive to this as I can taste the silicone in vaporizers even when it is used very sparingly and is not placed directly within the vapor path. My vaporizer of choice is currently the Vapocane, as it has a pure glass air + vapor path apart from the SS sieve. The Vaponic and Vapbong which I also have use a small perforated grommet that holds everything in place as well as lets (cool) air though. It is not as offensive as the Herborizer (at least the unit that I had) but I can still detect the silicone flavor no matter what I use it for.

I am interested in your opinion because using the Vapocane requires quite a bit of work and loads of butane gas (when using the heat retention technique i.e. cutting the flame before inhalation as not to inhale any butane).

The Cloud has nothing in its airpath except glass and stainless steel. I don't think the taste is better, the Herbo had some very pure taste...never had the issue you did. But I didnt have the XL and thus no adjustable temp range and I always thought it took too long to warmup, or required too many primer pulls to get any vapour, and even then it wasnt very efficient and the clouds weren't very thick. It got a little frustrating.

I love the design of this vape and its simplicity, and the quality, but the Cloud will provide good vapour even on a very first hit. I wish I didn't sell the herbo so prematurily, so I could do some more testing and comparisons.

hi Herborizer owners..

Can someone tell me the length of the injector and bowl, for the 18.8 XL? This is the measurement I'm looking for:
