So I tried my hand at a little experimental cooking today but it didn't work at all and I'm really surprised! I wanted to try experimenting with smaller scale cooking, at the rate of about 1 gram fresh powdered herb per stick of butter to start, then I could adjust upwards in the future.I think a few things could have been the culprit. First I melted a stick of butter in a small pot on low heat, once melted I added 1 gram powdered herb and mixed over low heat. I put a lid on the pot, set the heat to the lowest setting (it's a gas stove) for 15 minutes and occasionally swirled the pot to stir. When I opened the pot the butter had browned, but not burned. I let it cool some with the cover on and then strained it through cheesecloth. I put the liquid in the fridge to harden and after squeezing out all the liquid, I discarded the then dark brown herb powder. I split the butter into two once it was a solid and my friend and I each had ravioli with spiked brown butter sauce. The problem is I didn't get the slightest bit high. I waited 3 hourds before giving up, rolling a joint (my solo is out for warranty), and writing this post.

So what did I do wrong? What do you think of my methods? I hope this was interesting.

There can be a few things that may have happened. Maybe the thc got oxidized into cbn by the long heating. Maybe you needed some fiber and vitamin b6 to make use of the fat, I don't know.

Next time you want to ingest cannabis just make something like some spinach and cook it the same way you made the cannabis butter. In other words just saute it in some butter or smart balance(not margarine as you body may not absorb a lot of it) and about 2-3 tablespoons of water, cover the pot and then when the water is gone and spinach is soft, turn off the heat, add the cannabis, stir it in good and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. Make sure the cannabis is ground up real good for the best effects. You can also add some garlic powder , paprika, and onion powder to give a good flavor and also help with the high.

Depending on the high you want meaning more relaxed or more of an up high you can eat the spinach with a high carbohydrate food like the ravioli for the relaxed or for the more up high you can eat some form of high protein food like meat, tofu or beans. If you eat a high protein food that isn't beans just eat a little carbohydrates to increase absorption of the protein. Something like a piece or two pieces of bread is fine. A potato or a little bit of rice is even better.

To increase the absorption you can take a vitamin b6 pill right after you eat your meal.

I think maybe you burned it? Every recipe I've seen for cannabutter says that you have a pot on the stove with water, and you place a smaller pot inside the larger one and do the work there.

That or it just wasn't enough herb to butter ratio, you'd have had to eat the whole butter to get the effects of 1g.

I think that^^ But don't you need to decarb it too to activate the working gooodies when making butter?

If you cook it in the butter you are decarbing it.

You didn't cook it long enough and you didn't use enough pot. I've used a gas stove without over heating, but you need to give it at least 30 minutes (don't let it get hot enough to let off any smoke). Your best bet is to get a double boiler and cook for at least an hour.

I believe water boils at a 100 degrees Celsius while decarbing happens at 150 degrees Celsius, but I might be off.

i agree. you definitely did not cook long enough to successively decard the THC. personally, i would use low heat for at the very least for a few hours if using fresh herb. also, you didn't use enough herb. 1gram of fresh herb for a stick of butter is a very small amount IMO.

Yea, a double boiler doesn't quite get there, but butter over a low flame is gonna get at least that hot. The trick with a gas flame is to not let it get too hot and cook away all the goodies. If it starts smoking and the weed starts frying you are way to hot.

I've used green bud in a double boiler and it worked fine, but imo your better off vaping it at low temps first instead of decarbing. You get baked twice and the buzz is better.

The double boiler is great if you just want to extract the THC into the butter if you are planning on cooking with the butter, since it allows you to get it hot for a long period with no danger of burning it.
If you are just going to eat the butter without further cooking, it isn't the best way to go...

He doesn't have to heat the herb up for long or at all if he wants to decarboxylate the thc-a, all he has to do is eat food high in vitamin b6 which is why I recommended the spinach. Plus it has fiber which holds onto the fat as long as you don't use too much fat over spinach. This is important because if you have food that contains the b6 such as his ravioli which most likely had some in it although very little, unless the fat is attached to the food the b6 won't get the enzymes going to decarboxylate the thc-a or even process the fat that is holding the thc because the b6 will be released more slowly then the fat which is a liquid and therefore go through the body much faster.

Cannabis is just an herb and should be treated as such. When cooking with herbs you only use them when the dish is done so you can preserve the oils. You also eat the herbs with a meal and not just a whole bunch by itself. You should treat cannabis the same, you add it to your meals once done cooking but you should also have whole meals containing vegetables, protein and carbs to get the best effects and different ratios of protein and carbs depending on the type of high you want. Even something like a mashed avocado with some lemon juice and cannabis mixed in and sitting for 5 minutes is good enough to feel the effects. My friend cooked his in some eggs and made a sandwich and got high. A secret is just take a vitamin b6 pill with your meal to increase the use of the fats containing the thc and also to breakdown the thc-a so the thc can do it's thing as b6 helps the body process fat as well as activate the decarboxylases enzymes.

huh, i've never heard about the effects of vitamin B6 with THC. very interesting bit of information. i'll definitely have to try that the next time i have edibles.

HighlyEducatedScholar,
Wow, vitamin B6! I am going to try this next time I have an edible. I usually just eat edible on an empty stomach and have a glass of red wine. I felt like for some reason the wine activated it and made the effects stronger. This actually how I started off medicating, I only used edibles.

I make some pretty awesome peanut butter balls that are super effective. I use both medicated butter and peanut butter. I haven't made them in a while, but this making me want some. The best part is the recipe makes about 60 chocolate balls that you can then keep in the freezer to grab anytime. Let me know if anyone wants the recipe or if I make them later I will post it! :)

Please post the recipe....
I tend to prefer canola oil for my edibles as I use the cold infusion "leeching" process - regardless I'd like to see it...and welcome.

I'd say that was definatly not enough weed, means you ate only 0,5 grams per person.
and only 15 minutes on the stove is very short too, I often see people putting it on for hours, usually I don't have the time/patience for hours so I keep a minimum of 30 minutes, and then as much as I'm willing to wait after it. I usually end up taking it off and on the flame ver often, when it starts cooking(bubbling) I take it off the flame to let it cool down a little bit. that is on the lowest flamesetting, but still not low enough.

I've never made edibles with just fresh weed, always at least a part trim or ABV, but I use 20-30 grams per stick of butter, but in that case I also don't eat it all by myself at once. but I think I usually eat an amount that contains 4-5 grams or so, so for fresh weed I would eat at least 2 grams.
I have to eat at least twice the amount all my friends need tough(it's not tolerance since that's only with edibles)
so I would say at least 1 gram for someone with an average tolerance. (some friends that had their first time high with brownies I made only needed a few bites, but I don't think that's sufficient for anyone with an average tolerance)

i believe you got the dose wrong. you need to ingest more for the method of consumption you are choosing. i'd say plan on eating about 2-3.5g of fresh herb per person depening on your tolerance. (for me eating is a different animal. i only do it when i have nothing else to do all day.

make this your only meal if you want it to be more powerful
