Frustration With Vaporizers : Vapir NO2 and MagicFlight Launchbox

hi. ive had some really undesirable experiences with 2 separate vaporizers now which keep sending me back to simply smoking because it is *less* harmful to my health.

that sounds crazy right? vaporizing is supposed to be better for you!! well thats what i thought too. part of my problem is perhaps because i medicate *alot* and i am also very sensitive to carcinogens so i require something to use on the go which has restricted me to handhelds (portables). but then again im not sure if any stationary units would not also have these same issues... if anyone has any suggestions or ideas, they are welcomed. thanks.

VAPIR : NO2
this was the first vap i tried. when i first started using it, i began to get really itchy. i can only assume i had an allergic reaction to some of the hardcore toxic plastic that it comes with. In addition to that, i was getting short of breath after vaping with it. wtf!! i was so confused because combusting with a lighter NEVER gives me those symptoms. i realize that none of the plastic is involved in the heating process, but... the very fact that smoke touches so much plastic on its way to you must be enough to make the smoke toxic (imo). (at least to someone extremely sensitive to carcinogens/toxins). I must also mention that the very first *microhit* u get in which you can actually see smoke (vapor) come up the tube tastes fine and seems to be ok, but thats hardly a hit!! i wouldnt get too much respiratory symptoms from doing *just that* but, to actually finish off a bowl and get more than that first half/microhit..(and turn the weed brown/vaped) i start tasting things like metal/plastic/disgusting bits of smoke i can exhale which i know are NOT vapor. Also, it will seemingly allow you to take these *phantom plastic/metal hits* as long as you desire... the smoke/vapor never seems to stop. You can leave the unit on and it will simply leak vapor out of it unendingly (even empty). what it is, i have no idea... plastic metal bits of smoke? heh. so u can keep hitting this and killing yourself quicker (if desired). lol

MAGICFLIGHT LAUNCHBOX
this is my 2nd attempt at finding a healthier way to ingest cannabis. It seemed all natural (wood, etc, better than plastic right?) but at first view, this thing just looked way too cheap. I was thinking are you serious? this is what im going to pay 100 bucks for ? but i did it anyways. mistake!!! so, this one burns the initial cannabis hit a little better than the no2.. and you get more of a solid *hit* which actually tastes like weed. after that first hit? it seems to BURN UP the metal inside it and gives me respiratory symptoms. (i get short of breath). It also burns up the wood i believe a little (as the glass tube that came with it became yellowish after the first few hits in addition to the metal screen becoming burnt (a little more just about every time i use it). So essentially what this is in my opinion, is a glamorized metal pipe, in which you will burn up the metal bits and consume horrible aluminum and wood particles you should never be inhaling.

Some people may think this is all due to user-error, but i really can't see it. Unless you are supposed to simply take that first hit and then discard the rest of the weed... but the problem with that is it is not fully browned or vaped yet. so to get the entirety (or even just the majority) of the thc burned, u need to burn up metal, plastic or wood particles to accompany your *carcinogen-free-smoke*. this is a fallacy. its really disappointing as someone with health concerns that finding a way to vaporize and actually have it be healthier is seemingly a lie.

so now i have 2 useless smoking devices valued over a hundred dollars. awesome. -_-

I typically smoke out of a glass pipe. That is probably the most harsh way to ingest cannabis, yet, i NEVER get these breathing problems from smoking that way. (and i smoke at least 3-4 times a day). I just did some googling and found a supposed ALL-GLASS-VAPE with no metal or plastic (or wood) to burn up in the process. that seems like what i need!! unfortunately its stationary. heh. i may consider picking it up anyway : http://www.vapolutionvaporizers.com/vaporizerfaq.html

anyways, has anyone experienced breathing problems FROM vaping like me? I know it sounds insane but this has been 2 separate vaporizers now that do this to me. If its not the heating element, the wood, the plastic, or the metal screens causing me problems, i really dont know what it could be. maybe the vapor itself just coats my lungs and causes breathing problems? i have no idea. it sucks though.

at a local cannabis club they offer this thc "mist" now. i dont know how well it works but apparently its like a mouth spray type of consumption and completely free of smoke/carcinogens. i suppose this is what ill try next but i hate so much that vaporizing has failed me and i have to continue smoking with declining health. heh

thanks for any ideas

Yo syn,you should read the MFLB forum and get a good idea of how to use the LB. The learning curve is steep, but rewarding. Some other really experienced members also found the LB to be very harsh causing
coughing, technique and maybe some glass diffusers might make it better for you. Good luck and keep
us posted.

First off, very sorry you're having problems, hopefully I can help a bit with some of them? Never met a NO2, someone else will have to comment. I have used Gold Mist spray, which is what I assume you're talking about. The Pure Gold folks make it. It goes under your tongue, not down your throat. The stuff's mostly Everclear, spray that down your throat I you can have a new adventure in respiratory fun. 3 or so sprays and you're off to a mild Sativia high in half a minute? Perhaps a bit more. OK for when it's called for, but IMO not a good prime source for most. Do check it out.

I own several MFLBs and have recommended them to friends. They are not for everyone, but IMO they are good for most people. You can do a lot with them. Extensive testing shows the wood doesn't really burn nor the metal degrade to any significant degree. However, because of the way vapor is produced at the lowest possible heat level 'wand hash' happens quickly. THC condenses back everywhere, because everywhere is cooler than the screen. Even other parts of the screen. This very quickly seals everything up inside so even if the wood was outgassing you wouldn't be getting it most likely. Again, careful tests find no contamination in the output vapor, unlike anything related to combustion.

And sadly yes "you are supposed to simply take that first hit and then discard the rest of the weed". Send it to me, I'll dispose of it.... Sorry, don't get many straight lines around here. The fact is THC doesn't taste like much. All the stuff you and I call taste, flavor, aroma, whatever is in the group of chemicals that vape off just before the THC comes off. They are almost all in the first hit or two, often hits with little or no THC yet. What you want is the vapor that follows, strange as that sounds. The good stuff is the faint 'smoke' you can barely see in good light from that point until you get to the dreaded 'brunt popcorn' taste. At that point you're actually hot enough to start breaking plant material down. Not burning yet, but rapidly getting there. And the THC is mostly gone, time to refill. So flavor in the first two, medicine in the next ten or so. Shake between hits, draw slow, let the heat build. Try to get it too hot, it's pretty hard to combust and once you know the clues of getting close you'll find it easier to hit the sweet spot and get big results.

And then you get the Jones for a PA and WPA of your very own to go with it.....

Good luck, but please do stick with it, it's working well for thousands of us happy campers.....

Syn ikk, looks to me you didn't read much about the vaporizers you bought, or about vaporizing, otherwise you wouldn't say some things you said along the post.

I don't own a Vapir NO2 but many do and can help you with your problems. First thing i read about it is you should leave it on for a while, after you unbox it, to get rid of nasty smells. I don't know how many times you tried but from your post i would guess not so many..

About the MFLB, it is very easy to scorch the herbs if you leave the battery on for longer than a few seconds, especially after two or three hits.

About your shortness of breath problems, i had a lot more problems with vaporizing when i first started. These respiratory problems eventually subsided when i stopped smoking tobacco or joints and just vaporized so i suggest you do the same for a while. If you are not willing to do that, try hooking up the mflb to a bong or other kind of water filtration since it helps a lot with those issues.

I understand your frustration, but i assure you did not threw your money away. Many people had the some problems as you did and here at FC got their answers.

thank you for the quick responses, wow. lol. thanks for the tips, OF.... i am beginning to understand how it works and use it better, but it is still causing me the breathing problems. I seriously never get these shortness of breath symptoms from just smoking. how could that be? what is it that my lungs are having such a horrible reaction to? and has this EVER been reported in anyone??

it has to be something in the vaporizing process, because smoking i never get these problems!! it sounds crazy i guess. if i wasnt me and i read someone explain all that, it would sound bizarre to me as well. heh. i duno what to do but continue smoking, when i hit this vaporizer really hard i get chest pains and my heart starts to feel like it seizes up or something and then i cant breathe very well for a few hours.

not worth it!!! :/

thanks for the reply vorrange. nice to hear someone else actually have the same weird breathing issues at least. i did do a burn through with the no2, but the very idea there needs to be such a thing seems dodgey to me. when i was using the no2 i used it for about 1-2 weeks every day and at that point had quit smoking. after 2 weeks of suffocating i decided maybe i should give it a rest... and ive been breathing again fine ever since (and still smoking, heh).... until i just recently picked up the magicflight which to my amazement is causing the same problems!! if it really is just supposed to go away after awhile, that just seems odd. it really makes me feel like im suffocating and i cant get through that

There are compounds in cannabis that have an expectorant effect, and others similar to that one. When you smoke and vape, those compounds cause more problems, since they have more to clean up in your lungs.
My GF is not fully converted to vaping yet and she coughs a lot more than me with vaping. If you search in the medical section you will find more people having somewhat related issues, so i am guessing it is the same with you.

Bottom line, if you have a smoking history, tobacco and cannabis, or just tobacco, you will more likely develop a resistance in the beggining. From what i have read here and my experience, it will get better.

The water filtration helps a lot too.

Maybe you could do a full stop, with a little lifestyle change (dunno if you exercise, if not, start!), and in two weeks, start vaporizing. I truly believe the simplest explanation here, is the most accurate, but it could be a problem with the cannabis having harmfull chemicals or other chemical stuff to help it grow and such, that could be the culprit. IMO, it is just from combusting and now your lungs are reajusting.

one thing i have to add about the magicflight though is that the tube is turning completely YELLOW. i can take a picture even maybe... but that has to be from the wood burning i assumed? what else would make it yellow... this is certainly not something i want to put inside my lungs

Condensed THC my boy, what we're after. Eat it and you get off. Really. That's the stuff. Lots of folks collect it in alcohol, evaporate the alcohol off (like on glass) and vape that sucker back again. If you're using top shelf herb, you're running what 16, 18%? That stuff is in the 80s......

OF

Edit: I think it absolutely is what you're looking to put in your lungs. IMO a much better idea than the stuff you scrape out of the bong? That's the whole goal of the exercise, get several mg of that stuff as vapor into your lungs to get a few into you. For instance the spray is 1.5 mg a shot IIRC.

No, that is the vapor that is condensed in the stem. nothing to worry about, it is like resin. in other vaporizers you can collect it and make hash. :D

yeah, the herb i have currently is 20% thc content high grade cann. k, well if the yellow is just the vapor (resin?) then, cool. im a nub so sorry/thanks lol.

anyways, I just took a regular glass pipe hit after 48 hours of nothing but vaping and i instantly could taste all the nastyness. (i can literally taste the disgust of the lighter fluid and etc after not smoking for a while)

I reallyyyy prefer the way thc is ingested from vaping over smoking... it just tastes cleaner. none of the unwanted lighter fluid and other combusted crap. the problem is that end taste im getting with using these vaporizers is so much worse even than the entirety of what i get from smoking.. and since i have the shortness of breath issue i can only assume its worse for me.

ive adopted a method of using the launchbox but maybe im doing something wrong?

heres my process :

1.) i completely grind up the weed to fully fill out only 'one thin layer' of the launchbox's bowl. it seems that to pile on more weed just doesnt work all that well, and simply results in the weed underneith getting burnt to a crisp (black) while the rest just sits on top (green)... unless it was ground to really fine particles perhaps.

2.) i heat it up and within 2-3 seconds after i see the vapor start to form in the bowl, i start to take a draw. after this i try to balance out the heat by inhaling more/less until it is at a constant flow/temperature.

3.) then after a few seconds, i loosen the battery so the heating stops. i hold it in. then i exhale. it tastes awesome. and i feel like ive just taken a moderately successful hit.

the remaining problems are that usually this doesnt use up the weed completely.. the sides may be a little brown but the middle is still green usually with some visible thc crystals... even if i take a LONG hit. **if i take a long hit, it scorches the screen which is becoming more and more brown every burn. i realize im ruining this pipe perhaps but i dont see any way to use this device without scorching up the screen to try and vape up the weed completely.** im trying to just discard the residual weed after that first hit now... which i guess is just what you have to do? since burning up the screen cant be good.

anyway, i feel better again after *smoking* (no breathing issues yet as ive wrote this). which sucks. wish my breathing would get better and i could just switch to vaping. i fail at vaping. vaporizers fail me. i want an all glass one that can't *BURN* anything. i guess ill just have to accept that ill be condemned to smoke for life to death.

peace

When i'm hitting my LB, i pack little in the chamber like you, but not too little because it wont be satisfying. Then, as i plug the battery i shake the box, for about 3 seconds and then i stop and inhale. Repeat 2-3 times, hold and exhale.

I still find it difficult to get an even vaping with the MFLB, it has to do with the voltage of the batteries. It makes the heating very fast, and if you are not carefull you will easily burn it.

I try not to draw for too much longer after the initial 3 seconds with the light on, since it will be much easier to burn.

I understand you feel better after smoking, but that is a false sensation. You feel worse with vaporizing because you smoked for so long. It is one thing to stop smoking and after a while do a couple of bong hits once in a while.. Another is to have a daily habit and start vaping. Don't know which one is your situation but, seems to be more of a habit.

Stop smoking and vaporizing, then in a few weeks start vaporizing. If you still have the breathing problems, stop for a bit more time. After that, either see a doctor to check if you have any underlying condition or restart smoking..

Hey syn, one thing I noticed you didn't mention was shaking the box in between hits. This exposes the green parts of the trench and gets you a lot more tasty hits.

FWIW Syn, I have respiratory problems as well and they are aggrivated most easily by my LB. You should try some other vaporizers and maybe use water filtration. It has worked wonders for me.

try popping a benadryl or two 20 min. before vaping. I was exactly like you, and the mflb was the worst due to it vaping and inhaling so closely to the herb. switch to concentrates or a dbv/ssv (the vapor has a longer time to cool, and the particulates and allergens stidck to the tube). combusting/smoking doesnt cause the separation since the flame burns everything and leaves no stray trichomes floating in the air.. whereas vaporizing you're pretty much sucking down a stream of pollen until the heat gets it sizzling quick enough..

if the benadryl cuts down your issues, you know its allergy related. theres a thread about vaping drying out lungs in the general discussion section you may find relevant..

The yellow stuff in your tube is condensed resin as was said already. Not soot. It's the best stuff worth reclaiming.
The "metal burning" is normal. Actually, metal can't burn - it is not burning. It just discolors in time, nothing wrong.
Cannabinoids are expectorants and you are getting more of them with vaporization, so you can feel more urge to cough, although the vapor is much cleaner and healthier.
If you feel too mucc irritated, you can try water-filtering it.
Or enhancing your technique - shorter hits, more shaking, less waiting before drawing. Oh and don't forget to clear the chamber after you stop the power. Don't let the remaining vapor sit there and condense in the vape. It will make it smelly a lot faster, than normal use.
Or get a PA ans set it to low temp. I've tried the lowest temp possible yesterday and it tasted SO SMOOTH. Yet it made clouds. Or I¨ve tried to add a bit of mint in there. It made the vapor feel so cool.

The MFLB was my main Vape for almost 2 years.. I really liked it but always felt it was a little high maintenance for me.. There was WAY too many things I had to think about while using it(and even getting ready to use it)..

Anyway after reading these forums until my eyes hurt, I finally decided to try the Solo. I am not the type that can afford to collect a lot of Vapes.. I really looked for what people were saying etc...I LOVE it... It is Soooooooooooo easy to use and the vape hits I get with it, compared to the MFLB, are huge..

You dont have to worry about battery (is it in, is it out, am I pushing it in far enough, is it charged, is it old, do I need new battery), You dont have to worry about your draw(am I drawing too slow, too fast, am I doing it right, why am I not getting any vape). You dont have to worry about shaking it all the time. and you dont have to worry about accidentally combusting (Which I did several times with MFLB)

Anyway for me 2 things have become most important when I look for a Vape..

1. Has to be VERY Easy to use and maintain....Plug and play... ANYONE can use it the first time with ease.

2. Has to produce good consistent natural tasting vape... time and time again..(I dont want to have to think about my draw technique.

The Solo has been my dream come true.. Just wish I had tried it a year ago..

To syn ikk,
My wife has tried to quit smoking for many years now. She has tried the patch with short lived success, and I cannot get her interested in vaping nicotine for some reason.

Where I am going with this is that every time she quits smoking, her lungs get so bad that many times we have had to take her to the hospital for treatment so that she can breath. These symptoms usually go away within a week or two.

I do not really understand it myself, and the symptoms don't start until three or four days after she stops smoking, but it almost seems like her body rejects not smoking. As I said, the breathing problems usually subside within a week or two, and she can generally control the flair ups with an inhaler.

When I first started vaping (first marijuana, then nicotine) it took me three months before I found out what vaporizing really did. I think a lot of the problem smokers have about vaping weed is that they have been taught 'the more you cough, the more you get off', and tend to equate lung bursting smoke hits with getting high. Newcomers to vaporization (myself included) have a hard time believing that such a sweet, delicious, non-burning hit can do the job.

I had the epiphany one morning on the way to work. I would usually take 3 hits from my VB vaporizer and then do a few pinch hits on the way into work. So I get to work and realize I am so stoned that I forgot to do the pinch hits. And at 10:00 when I usually take a medication break, I was still so high I did not need to take my usual break.

Since then I have become a vapor fanatic, and now I think smoking weed tastes terrible. My smoking friends think I am out of my mind when I pass on their joints, but I can take a couple of nice clean vapor drags, save tons of money, and not smell like a Cheech and Chong movie. Good luck on your quest my friend.

Indeed. You'd have had to invent it of course, but after that......

For sure a 'turnkey vape' is a common goal. I like the idea and own a few (not the solo, at least not yet...) but I also like non computer driven ones where you have some more control of your fate. MFLB as an 'only vape' would get old for me, but I still enjoy mine very much when I'm 'in the mood'. Otherwise, it's really hard to beat Omicron for being convenient. It holds several hundred hits, clears easily if you screw up and jam it costs less than almost any serious vape you can name, is as discrete as you can find (how many other vapes get used in the 'OK to vape' area of local bars with the e-cig guys?) and only needs charging every hundred hits or more (2 or so hours). Feed it good oil, and it's your buddy.

Sorry to ramble, but there's lots of keen hardware out there to explore (and some turkeys of course).

Yes.. The Omicron was actually first on my list while researching here until I fond out its Oil only right now.. I just dont have any good access to oil and thus the Omicron would not work for my needs.. I am waiting to see if Omicron really comes out with the herb attachment and how well it works... If that turns out good, I would probably buy an Omicron at some point in the future...

I have also got on the waiting list for "The Hi".. Reason being is that several Hi owners are Solo users and say as much as they love their Solo, the Hi is even better as far as Hits go... Of course the Hi is not a portable type unit..

thanks for the comments about the breathing... maybe i just need those 2 weeks to get back to normal then if i do quit smoking.

anyway ive been continuing using the mflb and im better at hitting it now a little. and yeah im doing the shaking thing too inbetween and during draws a little... but everytime i use the vape i scorch up a little more of the metal/screen. its basically smelling like a burnt screen on a metal pipe now and becoming brown from silver. :/

i still kinda feel like i wasted a hundred bucks but im going to keep using it for awhile and see how it pans out. i dont know what else to look into. that vapulution site i linked in my initial post seems like something worth trying out the next time i feel like throwing some more money away. it says its all glass which id greatly prefer... but of course its not portable or anything cool. heh.

overall my experience with vaporizers seems to be that plastic bits and metal screens are a horrible idea. even tho butane and combustion sucks, it still feels nicer to just light up my glass pipe which is completely free of plastic or metal. i wish someone would make a legit all glass hand held portable vaporizer

I'm not so sure about the two weeks part, but for sure things change. As I see it, you get addicted to all sorts of stuff in smoke. Some of it made you choke and gag back when you were fighting the reflexes that were trying to protect you. Same happened to me, of course. You can't walk away from that free and easy. Not to mention part of your mind is willing to lie to the other part at times like this. Stick with it, you know it's an advantage.

Don't worry about the screen changing color. It's both normal and beneficial. Ever use cast iron pans? Season them? Same deal. Pores are getting filled with carbon at an atomic level. It improves heat transfer (dark surfaces work better....) and makes the surface smoother and less sticky just like it does in Grandma's favorite pan. You want it really. I also wouldn't sweat the plastic cover, notice how it never gets more than a little warm? There's just not very much energy involved and it's focused on the herb or rather a small part of it. The vapors waft up (or down through the mesh) an hang there until the gentle airflow sweeps it out and into you. Well engineered products can use materials intelligently and safely 'close to the fire'.

Finally, be very careful what you ask for. Someone does indeed "make a legit all glass hand held portable vaporizer" (although it does have a plastic seal and mouth piece). You heat it with your lighter and it costs ten bucks:

http://www.fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-unofficial-overly-meticulous-the-ubie-review.2493/

Fun gadget, and the price is right. Vicki just got our own Vitolo to make one of his famous videos, worth checking out even if you don't order a Ubie of your very own (which you should....).

Excellent point, Brother Stu. Not to mention their 'glass bat' which is less bucks, probably a bit more stout, and a little less obvious. Not much, but a little.

Syn ikk, I'm glad you didn't give up, it will be worth it in the end, you will feel much better. Your story is roughly the same as lots of people here at FC so we are not just saying this, we experienced it.

About the all glass vaporizer, i would say the best for the money is the gn0me. The Ubie has a bigger learning curve (meaning you will more easily scorch the herb) and is more fragile.

I heard great things about the Genie, and i have a wood one that still acompanies me from time to time but is a much bigger investment.

But for 25$ you get an all glass vaporizer, with no butane inhalation whatsoever, and a quick learning curve. And i assure you will get great tasty hits with an even roast. Just don't forget it is glass and it is hot. :D

The mflb is still my stealth-to-go vape right now so, keep at it as well!

There is a bit of a learning curve with my vapes, but you can at least rest assured that you're not inhaling anything other than what is contained within your herbs...

Even then, vapor can be irritating to the lungs - they were meant to take oxygen out of the air, not various oils and terpenes... I have to second the things that were said earlier about withdrawal or changeover symptoms, as well as allergies. We're inhaling air passed directly over female flowers (so no pollens to worry about as long as the grower is doing his part) but the various other particles can cause allergic reactions, not to mention whatever is being used on the plants to control pests (neem if the grower is responsible, much worse stuff if they're not or if they let the bugs get out of control)...

So water filtration helps to remove the particulates from the air stream, as well as cooling it to reduce irritation... if you have a traditional water filtered piece, you might try to pass the vapor through that after a thorough cleaning to see if it helps. If you're sensitive to chemicals, I can't recommend using a vape which has you breathing in the exhaust of a butane lighter... keep at it, though, and let your lungs cycle all the junk you've been putting in them out :)

Here's to your health!
