Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

Not sure if this has been discussed on this long ass thread, but has anyone found some heavier duty ac adapters online? I've had my PD for over a year and my 4th ac adapter just died. third one in the last 2 months. So if anyone knows of a better, longer lasting ac adapter that would be awesome.

Or if someone has a guide on how to fix it that would be great too.

I'm not sure about heavy duty plug....someone will chime in about that but I have read a post from Max about folks beefing up their original cord with electrical tape or shrink wrap.

5. Anyone figure out how to beef up the cord. I can see the point near the connection just crying out to fuck up.
Try some shrink wrap to extend the strain relief, or wrap (tapering) with electrical tape.

The power supplies rarely 'die' IME.

Here is an easy check to see if it's the power supply or a broken cord or plug.

Plug the power supply into a known working outlet (ei. test the outlet with a radio or light etc.). PLug the supply into the outlet, then don't plug anything into the power supply. Let it alone for 1/2 hour. Come back and check with the back of your hand for warmth. Is it slightly warm, then the power supply is working and you have a broken cord or plug. Is it cold, unlikely but possible, then you have a dead power supply.

I look down and see my cord tangled in the wheels of my chair, I knock the thing off the desk or workbench and it hits the plug or hit's the 'end of the rope' and jerks the plug and wire. I might say to myself, "be more careful..." but I'm not likely to take my own advice.

Here is a link to the Type M plug at Radio Shack. 2 for $2.99. Just cut about 6 inches off the original power cord and install a new plug on the working power supply.

I took the car adapter cut 2 feet off, cut 2 feet off the broken ac adpter and spliced the wires together. Now I have heavy duty plug and wire works fine.

If I had to guess, it seems like it's a loose wire. Like you said the actual power supply never really fails. I understand that. But what seems to keep happening is the power supply feels like it "dies". Last night the PD was plugged in and I noticed it was cold. So before I went to bed i unplugged it moved and plugged it back in. When I woke up it was warm but didn't feel as warm as it should.

This cord shouldn't be having problems. We are pretty careful with the cords. If we seem them tangled we untangle. If it's twisted we untwist it. What makes even less sense is that the first cord that came with the PD lasted longer than the 3 I ordered from jamco. And we were much less careful with the first cord.

How do you fix a broken cord or plug? For the cord it involves soldering is that right?

Anyway thanks for the fast replies.

That's a good idea. The car adapter is definitely heavier duty.

LO, I just did this last week, I broke mine at work no back up!! I called emailed PD home first and Pammy got me settled with what may have happened, usually it breaks at the end going to the PD body, the unit is good just the plug end on mine. This is just mine. Sooo, I thought is was screwed and I went to the shack, funny story but not a good thing for un educated electric type like me, back home and nothing to fit from this shack, so I cut er open, careful, mine was broken at the center joint not the side one, so I soldereded it back, test in 20 min. and it is heating, on we go, broke again 3 days later, same one, right at the same spot, resoldered and so far so good. My point kind of is, it broke way up, not at the end of the rubber flex joint, all that was perfect.

Hi all. I've been enjoying my brand new, ridiculously efficient PD for a week now, but I have a few questions. I hate to ask without finishing all the pages of this thread, since that's gotta be part of why it's so long, but here goes:

1) Cleaning the heating element - it seems everyone expects to drop crumbs down there, but if I fit a screen over the crossbar would it prevent the herb in the vapor tube from reaching the vapor zone? Any better way to clean it than a q-tip?

2) I developed a rough head cold (hacking cough, head full of mucus) right after I started using the PD, but I told myself it was a coincidence and kept on vaping. Two days ago my nose started bleeding, so I quit using the PD and switched back to the iolite it has mostly replaced. No nosebleeds for 24 hours. This morning I vaped about half a tube, and my nose was trickling blood before I could exhale the second hit. Am I paranoid for drawing a connection, or has anyone experienced anything similar? For reference, I load the tubes about half full with schwag and then pack lightly with the end of a bamboo chopstick so there's plenty of airflow, then draw with lungs for ~10 seconds and hold as long as possible. The PD has been running nonstop for 8 days, and I've gone through maybe 3-10 such bowls a day - so I'm vaping less than half as much herb by mass as I would otherwise be smoking. I used to get this effect very rarely when I would smoke heavily (say 3x a normal day's smoking), but never from the iolites, volcanoes, or whip vapes I've used. Do yaw suppose my fragile nasal lining just can't take the heat, or is there any possibility I've been inhaling something dangerous?

Dutchroller, I think I have read every post in this thread. Ask away, I don't mind questions.

Nobody has reported anything like this (nose bleeds).

A head cold and congestion may have made you prone to a nose bleed. Then sucking hard may have caused it. Similar to your experience sucking on a joint. There is the connection, I believe. Yep, just went over to try it out. A lung draw and I pinched my nose closed (simulating severe congestion) and could feel the negative pressure.

I have to ask about your inhale technnique. If you are using your lungs to draw you may be putting a lot of vacuum pressure on your clogged nasal cavities while they are sensitive. Try using your mouth to suck the air in like sucking a milk shake, the Sherlock Draw. This should eliminate the negative pressure on your nasal passages.

There isn't much chance heat is any problem as the air travels into your lungs before you exhale through your nose.

And all the modified parts, are washed in hot soapy water before assembly, so there is no manufacture residues, oils etc. (BTW Pammy and I have not had any colds, flu etc. that we would pass on to you ;) )

Your first question about cleaning the heating element. If a crumb drops into the heat exchanger you can turn the unit upside down and give it a few taps on it's side with your fingers. Use gravity to get anything out the same way it went in. But this 'cleaning' is something I rarely bother to do. Any crumbs drop through the holes in the body into the lower cavity where they remain cool and cause no problem. Sticking things down the throat of the heat exchanger is not required, not suggested and can cause problems.

You can fit a screen into the heat exchanger, it won't effect heating, but it presents another problem, any of the smallest particles are gonna pass through the screen and be difficult to remove using the above technique. So once a month turn it over and tap any crumbs and dust out.

While one the subject of cleaning, my crossbar has over time has gotten a coat of black burnt material. I'm a very heavy user, and vape a lot of keif and hash so I know this is my fault and I've caused it with my carelessness :ugh: . Tom would it be OK to use a q-tip with a bit of ISO to try and clean the bar? It doesn't affect the taste or anything, at least I don't think. I'd like to clean it before it gets worse. I have tried steaming it off with a damp q-tip while the unit was unplugged but still warm, didn't do squat like I had figured lol.

My crossbar had that layer for a while too, cleared right up when I cut up a screen and stuck it in there.
I think placing a screen in the PD greatly increases it's ease of use. I vary how much I pack my loads quite a bit, and along with keif hits I've lost quite a bit to the HE tube. With a screen you never have to worry, even a little bit, and you can take it out to dump out dust that builds out :2c:

What did you use to clean the bar up before adding the screen? Tom what trick do you use to cut your SS screens for the vapor tubes? Would a bit of reamed and sharpened SS tubing be able to cut out a screen in a drill press?

Simple solution. Tilt the PD up at an angle for the first few hits and nothing will fall out. I've had my PD's for over a year and have never had an issue where I felt that I needed any kind of screen.

Oh I'm very careful with that, however I also vape while gaming and working so when I go to put my PD down, on its side of course, I tend to drop a bit of crumbs or dust into the HE. This is really caused by the vapor tube wiggling a bit when putting it down, my stem fits very loose in my HE, when I build my PDP I'm actually going to modify it to have a tighter fit. If my stem did not move around so much, I would never drop any bud, but I understand the loose fit make sit easier to get the stem into the HE, however this is not a concern for me personally. Of course crumbs don't always fall down, and when they do its not a big deal, it comes right down. And I don't think the cross bar blackening is caused by dropped bud, but bud in the stem actually touching the bar while in the stem from just over packing.

EDIT: But yes, when vaping normally you should not be having any problems with bud dropping, and I don't. It only happens when I put it down, or not careful and let the stem move around, which I usually keep secure with my pinky. Trust me I'm not complaining, I don't think a screen is necessary, and a permanent screen IMO is a bad idea. For my personal style of use, a removable screen or a tighter fitting stem would be beneficial but absolutely not necessary.

ReEDIT: That is a solution, however I'm really put off by the taste when revaping a half vaped bowl. Again, this is a personal issue, that has to do with me and not the PD. Why exactly are you so against someone else using a removable screen in their PD? I see no disadvantages to it, long as it is removable.

Crossbar cleaning: If you feel the need to clean it, I suppose the first thing I would suggest is unplug the unit then let it cool. Use as high a percentage ISO as you can get (best cleaning and quickest evaporation). Turn the unit up-side-down so anything that drips just runs back down the Q-tip and not down into the PD. Be sure the unit is dry when you plug it back in.

Screen cutting can be done a few ways. For most folks the best access to Stainless screen is at the 'tobacco' shop. Get the standard stainless pipe screens and a pair of household scissors. Cut the screen in half then cut the halves again leaving you with quarters. Pie slices with a right angle at the point. Make a cut parallel to either of your straight cuts and the proper width (hold it up and count the wires it takes to span the ID of the tube). Now cut that strip into a square (same number of wires across axis x and axis y). Now that you have a square, nibble away at the corners to make a circle.

And yes, a piece of stainless tubing can be made into a rotary cutter. You can also punch them.

Yes a removable screen in the throat of the PD would work for some folks. But it's not a good solution for the GP. Again use the tips above to cut a screen and try it out. No reason not to.

Wow, thanks for the quick response. I saw a doc and am 100% sure the respiratory issues have nothing to do with the PD, the timing actually was a coincidence. Sorry for pulling a Chicken Little everybody.

Oh great method to cutting! I'd just been hacking away at my screen reserve until something worked. I

Ya, I'll put out there that screens are far from required for all to enjoy the full potential of the PD. That being said for me screening up the crossbar seemed like the natural thing to do, like a glass pipe. Doesn't need it, but why not :2c:

And t00fat, the screen itself seemed to abrade most of the gunk off. Not the cleanest solution, but I blow into my HE regularly so it's all good.

Glad to hear it dutch! Vape on :peace:

We are steadily hacking away at the PD wait list. Should be 6-8 weeks before we (VapeNow and Purple-Days) are ready for new sales. Unless Pammy makes me take a couple weeks off after I finish the list. 30 at a whack this round, final assembly and testing today.

When we return to PD sales there will be no wait list. The details are still being worked out, but VapeNow.com will continue as our partner and exclusive North American retailer. The wait list just never worked out well for anybody. I can also announce that Amazon will not be handling any Purple-Days products. No Amazon = No bar codes, No environmentally unfriendly over packaging, No impersonal third party shipping your PD. Our buddies at VapeNow will finalize the new system in the coming weeks and we will let folks know how it will work.

As always I try to make small improvements whenever I can. The #5 PP tubes are now finished even slicker. I have been through several methods of shaping, this is one I used and rejected. It worked well when I first used it but was very awkward for several reasons. I have changed the tool I use to spin the tubes (for shaping) and with that change I can now use one of the older shaping methods. A slightly better time per piece, but more importantly, it leaves the body of the tube looking better (still translucent, but more transparent than before) and the mouthpiece nice and slick.

Crossbar cleaning: Sneezyjesus says, "the screen itself seemed to abrade most of the gunk off". I looked down into my daily driver unit, the crossbar was black and a bit grooty. Decided to clean it up a bit. The blackend junk was brittle and scraped right of, it wasn't really 'stuck' like fried food on a skillet, just scrapped off like thin ice on a windshield.

Can someone comment on what it's like vaping lower grade (commercial) weed with a pd?
Is vaping commercial better than smoking it, or worse as far as taste?

Vaping is always better regarding taste, unless you like the acrid taste of toxic smoke, and this holds true regardless of the grade of bud that you are vaping.
