The weird thing about Vapor smell

I use the Buddha vape. I usually use it in my living room.. and the smell always dissipates after an hour or so.

It's great no complaints. I have an old heat lamp which I use to dry dank or recently harvested bud with.

It works like a charm, and about a minute under the heat lamp turns even the dankest, stickiest buds into easily grindable and vapable green.

The point I'd like to make is that when I dry the weed using the heat lamp... the ENTIRE house smells like weed for hours. Like an incredibly pungent smell.

What I don't get is how when the weed is being heated and vaporized, it makes virtually no smell.. but when it just get's heated it stinks up the entire house?

And the same thing happens if I dry only a bud or two, as opposed to an entire 1/4 at once.

Any theories?

with heating that way i think you will lose alot of potency
+1 to that, light even the fainter, is never good for the harvested herb. Plus the heat, I think that's a bit too overkill, weed has to dry slowly and durin curing, heating it for drying purposes is not indicated, alters smell, potency and taste too, I guess even decarboxylation could happen at certain temperatures.

try an experiment with all the different smell scenarios with someone who isnt used to the herb smell.

I think you are basically vaporizing it already, or at least steaming/evaporating it fast - so the smell goes with that as well.

It is going to stink while it is wet!

If you want to dry it fast - consider a desiccant - that is the little pouches you find in shoe boxes that say "Do not eat".

You can then basically dry your herb in an enclosed space, containing the smell, and the desiccant will do it's job of absorbing the moisture in the air.

The terpenoids are what give mj their smell, and vaporize at a very low temp. Its possible you are boiling these away with the heat lamp which would definitely stink your house up.

Ive decarbed weed before for edibles, and doing this process requires to go way past the temp where most of the terps evaporate so it always smells the place up when doing this.

Why it doesnt stink as much when you vape, maybe going into your lungs first has something to do with it?

Vaking a trench in my MFLB with people in the next room 15 feet away. Two open doorways between me and there but they're not directly in my LOS so they'll never know. ;)

^ unless they walk into the room your in!

I am pretty sure that depending on the "level of stealth needed" you can get away with vaping a bowl here or there. Like if your just worried about your parents fining out and the worst that would happen is you get grounded, then you don't need to be the ultimate vapor ninja. Whereas, if you need to vape a bowl at work and its understood youll be fired for doing so, you might be a little more concerned about stealth. So, if absolute secrecy is paramount the only safe way to ingest your vaporizables is to eat it.

As others have said the vapor itself isn't the stinkiest part of vaping, it's the grinding of product, or the vape itself. So of those variables, the vapor is the easiest to deal with because u can blow the Vapes into a smoke buddy. But the stink of the vape can't be covered up, neither can fresh vaporizables without some ozone spray or something which just becomes another thing to explain - "why does it smell like oranges in here"?

If this theory is correct (and I think it is) then the tastiest part is lost. The thing that I love most about vaping are those first tasty hits. Smell and flavour are closely related, so if warming it makes it smell, you're losing flavour.

I ordered a few of these reusable desiccant thingamobs for my ThermoVape material:

Should do the job of drying, while not heating it up.

sessnet,
I would guess it is because you are vaping a small amount, so you get a light smell, whereas you are drying a large amount, so you get a heavy smell.

It's probably the same smell as when you decarboxilate bud in the oven. You don't lose potency but you are obviously losing whatever compounds give off that smell. Besides just start leaving nugs out a day or two in advance or for the next day so they can dry properly. It will keep all the good flavor this way and make the weed more potent, instead of the possiple loss of terpenes or degradation of actives or whatever's happening with that high temp light. :2c:

My guess though is that with taking a hit then exhaling more of the terpenoids are being absorbed into your body than released to the air. Like when I had my EQ and if I were to have a smacked moment and leeave the fan on so it was constantly pumping vapor wiithout me taking a hit for a while, I'm sure it would quickly make my entire room smell like weed for a hours.

This specific scneario never happened to me but when I used bags, due to leakage my room would smell like weedd and it would spread down the hall a little even with door closed towel under it, while with the whip I didn't eveen need a towel under the door and can open and close my door to leave and take a deuce, grab food, answer the front door, etc without fear of smell spreading.

if you have an old school computer monitor i used to put my buds on a piece of paper towel, and put it on that. slow gentle heat would dry em ell enough.

realy though. jsut lay them out in a drawer, turn them once, and by the next day you are ready to rock :) this method loses the least of the goodies imo.

I dunno if that's true, if terpenoids are smell, I believe they have nothing to do with taste, but maybe I'm wrong. Flavinoids from what I understand provide the flavor of the herb, although they are released at a very low temp also (which is why the first light mist vapor when your vape is heating up tastes great), so maybe you're releasing both.

Ah me, where to begin. You've been misled by the name flavinoid, which is actually derived from the Latin flavus, meaning yellow. Flavinoids are named thusly because they give plants their colour; they have nothing to do with taste. Terpenoids, on the other hand, are found in the essential oils of plants and are what give them their smell (or at least are large contributors). That would mean they have a large effect on the taste, because smell and taste are closely linked. You can prove this to yourself by simply holding your nose and tasting something, or you could just look it up. From the online textbook The Nervous System In Action, Chapter 10:

It is appropriate that we consider taste and smell together because they are so intertwined in our experience that most people are unaware that most of what they call taste is really an olfactory experience.

You're right about the low temperature release.

This would not have any affect on...............THE HUMAN VAPOR !!!!

especially in the case of weed smell=taste, since it happens quite often that I can't taste weed at all(wich are the same moments I can't smell anything, I have a bad nose, altough it seems to be improving, I think last year I only could smell normally once a week or once a month or so, now it's a majority of the time I think)
