I dont know if this was mentioned, but i think if you do migrate at least please please please make links open in a new tab or window, just easier to look at links and see what other people are talking about at the same time instead of hitting the back button 20 times to get back to the page that had the link.

I hope there has been some stress testing so the first post by Vitolo doesn't crash the system.

I thought that was more browser dependent than site dependant?
In IE or Firefox, holding Ctrl + clicking the link should open the link in a new tab.
Or right clicking the link should give you an open in new window/tab option.

You can set different settings in your browser, but a website can be setup to open links in a new tab automatically too.

I have the button in my mouse's scroll wheel set to open any link clicked on in a new tab.
Makes browsing the internet a breeze, never have to remember which sites are set to open links in new tabs.

I hope the current ISO standard yyyy-mm-dd date format will be used with the new forum. It seem like a small thing, but it's something I've always liked about this forum (it's a bit of an obsession of mine). The "Feb 22, 2012" in the new forum doesn't look as clean as the current format.

You do realise you can already do this with a right-click don't you? I'd agree that it's better to make the new page/tab thing automatic, but it's not a big difference.

Love the forum guys. Keep up the great work.

P.S. If you need developer work or help with hosting or server maintenance. I am self employed and could be persuaded with vape coupons!

You agree but I don't. I'd hate having a new page or tab open every time, and I'll bet I'm not alone. Anyone who wants this behaviour can have it with trivial ease, so why impose it on people who don't want it?

OK for internal links I agree with you, but if the link is to another site, then it's quite conventional to have an automated new page/tab opener, and it's a feature I happen to like on websites.

I'd say about time! You deserve more, you've outgrown this format. This site with it's talented inventers and smart posters is one of the smartest on the internet. I'm happy for you.

Agreed. It's not a massive deal at all but is something I keep noticing is different about this to other forums I use.

Is the server move scheduled yet? Just curious if y'all have any idea when changes/downtime might be happening. Or maybe I just missed that info somewhere?

Thanks for doing what y'all do! :)

The new format is definitely awesome. I love the ability to private message (which should come with any forum). Also the "like" aspect is cool too.

Let's do it :)

Do we need to start a new profile on the new site, or will everything get migrated over?
When? If so, just tell us when......

I think the new forum doesn't look as good as the current one. There's more "chrome", making simple things more visually complex than necessary. It's got that Fisher Price look about it that unfortunately seems to be popular these days. I particularly don't like the area where the username is. Moderately long names are broken over two lines, and it looks quite ugly. Also there's no info about the user. I like to know where people are from and when they registered etc.

If you click on an avatar you get a lot more than this forum offers. As far as name length goes, it does break up long names, but you get about 16 characters before it splits, so I'd say that's more than moderate length. YMMV, of course.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and kind comments. I'm glad you're as excited as me and I really believe these changes will benefit the community. From an administrative point of view the new features will be a godsend, without them I don't think we'd be able to keep the Classifieds going much longer.

Going by the overwhelmingly positive response and barring any unforeseen issues, we'll be going forward with the migration, hopefully by the end of the week. Updates will be posted here and a global announcement will be issued 12 hours in advance.

...no matter how long you think it will take...it will probably take a little longer
You don't want to know how long it's taken to get to this point.

[h]External Link Behavior[/h]
This is a point of contention for sure. Back in my day websites asked before opening a new window. These days it's standard practice for forums to open external links in a new window and that is the default behavior in xenForo. As mentioned, it's possible to customize this behavior in your browser's settings.

[h]Styles[/h]
Yes, the new dark style is a change. I like the flat simplicity of our current default but I also like the new style. It's a bit more shiny but I certainly wouldn't call it "fisher price". I'm still tweaking aspects of it and may address the wrapping of long usernames. Recreating the original "FC" style for xenForo may be something to take on in the future, but in the grand scheme of migrating servers and software it's not at the top of the todo list.

It's possible to make your own tweaks or even your own personal styles locally using something like greasemonkey/scriptish, or "user styles" if anyone out there still uses Opera. ;)

Not seeing the user information on each post was something that thew me off a bit at first as well. That can be tweaked, but after some thought I think makes some sense, as a post should be judged on its own merit rather than by looking at the user's post count or registration date. As pakalolo mentioned, it's easy to get that info by clicking the user's avatar.

It's finally time! We'll be moving to our new server and software later today. When that happens we'll need to close down the site for the database import and DNS changes. During that time the forum will be inaccessible, but the chat room will be available here: http://199.180.254.196/chat/

After the import is completed you'll need to wait for the DNS changes to take effect before the fuckcombustion.com domain takes you to the new server. This should take under an hour, but may take longer due to a cached record somewhere between your computer and our nameservers; your web browser cache, your operating system cache, your broadband router cache, your ISP cache, etc.

A message will be posted here 1 hour before this happens. See you on the other side. :)
