Some strains VERY HARD to vape? :O (SSV)

This is something I noticed over time as I've been using (and loving) my Silver Surfer, with different strains. I really like the way it works, and I use a GG heater along with (obv) a GG whip. So anyway, usually I can take a small amount of ground up herb and it'll last 10 minutes, usually on about 1/2 temp. However, I recently got some meds (Grape Ape in particular) and I don't usually even use meds (from time to time, I live in a non-medical state, but don't ask lol) but I noticed that instead of the usual clouds of vapor I get, this has been giving me tiny, tiny bits of vapor with each hit, and after spending an entire 20 minutes on my SSV, I get no relief, feel just a little bit, much less than I would with one of my other strains. Sure enough, I put a different strain in, this time LA Confidential (named after one of my favorite movies, lol), and it was the usual amazing SSV-ape for 10 minutes, hit after hit, clouds of vapor. The one thing I can say is that the herb that I usually vape with the SSV is a bit dry and it tends to grow very dense, perhaps making it easier to vaporize? I just dont understand why the Grape Ape won't really vaporize. I tried smoking it, and it really is some amazing stuff. I looked this up on google, but all I could find were threads about people not liking the taste of certain strains vaped, but not BEING UNABLE TO ACTUALLY VAPE THEM.

This has happened before, once I got a strain and I thought something was up with my SSV, but again, the second I changed the herb, it worked perfectly. Usually the herb that doesn't work is less dense, perhaps more wet? I actually don't see a logical reason why this Grape Ape wouldn't vaporize as well as the other strains... anyone ever have this problem?

And most importantly, what can I do to fix this? Maybe drying out the Grape Ape some more will make it easier to vape? It works just fine in a pipe, with very strong, almost immediate effects (both medical and recreational) when smoked, but just about nothing after even 20 minutes of vaping.

What gives?

I would like to add that for everything, I use the same grinder and make sure they're equally ground up. I probably even ground the Ape up more because I've been trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong...

For the record, I know it got vacuum sealed at some point, but I doubt this has anything to do with it. I'm sure most of the stuff I get gets vacuum sealed at some point. Just throwing it out there.

Vaporization works best with very dry herbs. Let it sit out for a few days and see if you notice a difference.

density should really not be an issue in ground herb, moisture on the other hand is a serious factor.

As Stu suggested let it dry out for a few days and when its good and ready grind that baby up and it should vape like a champion.

I als notice difference in how it vapes, but not an extreme like that. I noticed that all(so far) weed frm the coffeeshop(so commercial indoor) produces big clouds pretty easily, but also scorches easily in my VG, I have to watch out to not let it get too hot and combust
while my own harvest, outdoor, seem to have a bigger vaporrange, it doesn't have that tendency to suddenly produce big clouds but more gradual, the sweet spot for nice big clouds also lies a bit higher(but I also like lighter vapor so usually I don't go for those big clouds)
the scorchingrisk is much lower with this own harvest outdoor, I can let the temp go up higher and there is more warning(hightemptaste) before it combusts, while the coffeeshopweed has a much less noticable border between a lot of vapor and combustion, sometimes I think I just had heavy vapor but not entirely sure, open it up and there is a small black spot, while with my own outdoor I already know ot for sure before opening up
also my own outdoor colors more eveny it seems, altough that could also be atributed to the higher temp and my tendency to take smaller/lighter hits
also the vapor from my outdoor looks more blue while the coffeeshpweed has a whiter vapor, but this culd also be atributed to the difference in hitsize
haven't tested outdoor from the coffeeshop

but also between different strains own harvest I noticed a difference, or even the same strain, for example when it wasn't cured yet or only a few weeks, the more sativastrain UK08 x Typhoon produced very little vapor. but after a few months of curing it produced plenty of vapor

Just say NO to grapes! JK, for real though I have had the same issue. For whatever reason, some strains just don't vape well for me. BTW I use a SSV and an UD, for the most part I never have issues but every once in a while it just doesn't work well.

Sometimes it seems to help to start off at an even lower temperature and take a good number of pulls and slowly start cranking up the temp. I have found that sometimes starting off to high of a temp actually lessens my vapor rips.

smartrott,
( off topic) smart rott i sent you a email through FC regarding your UD and SSV, please check it out thanks..

THAT is very interesting because i just got a strain like that, called Purple Diesel. Its got a nice amount of purple from genetics, none of that nute deficiency or cold weather purple spots, and I let it get super super dry and ground up like usual it just doesnt make a lot of vapor. My reasoning for this however is that is does not contain a lot of THC because i dont feel the high as much as i do a deep sense of relaxation that really really helps to calm my anxiety and gives a mainly body stone. Its interesting indeed. Though many strains would have this trouble just from moisture. OP, let your herb dry out and always dry your herb out as much as you need as soon as you get it so theres no question whether you will get good vapor(assuming the moisture is the culprit here).

Anyone else care to shed some light on this thing with these purple strains?

Great Scott!
Purple weed is obviously demonic.

I'd be willing to bet the color of the cannabis is just a coincidence in this small thread, or perhaps purple strains retain moisture better or something. Dry it out. If it vapes better, myth busted.

I have been having a similar problem with Bubba Kush this time. I definitely think the grind has something to do with it. When it's fine ground, I can get 3 or 4 hits off of an elbow pack and yet with most other (and even similar) strains I get 5 to 8 hits...

It smells yummy, however...

My weak-vaping strain at the mo is Norther Lights x Blueberry. Great fruity taste but not a great vapor producer. Still getting me hammered though :ko:

Yup, that Grape Ape is highly purple :p
Again, produces a GREAT smoke, but thats even more of an indicator that it would produce GREATER vapor, and I figure I'll just leave it out overnight and see what happens. I imagine it would have to be the moisture. I can't think of too many other factors. One thing to note is that with this kind of weed, even on temps that other strains turn BLACK at, they will still be completely green, meaning that vaporization is just not working (rather than the weed just lacking much thc or anything like that).

I'll let you guys know how it goes! Thank you for all the advice so far :)

PS: Is there, by any chance, a safe way to "speed-dry" greens? I was thinking, what about leaving it in the microwave for a few seconds? This may be really dumb, but its just an idea. Or perhaps a blowdryer? Lol, I have no idea and dont want to somehow destroy the weed or lose potency.

I ordered a few of these reusable desiccant thingamabobs, sort of the same thing that prevents moisture (DO NOT EAT packets) in shoe boxes:

Should do the job of drying "FASTER", while not heating it up.

Dont use anything. Just let it sit out for a day and check how dry it is by gently squeezing a nug. it should crumble easy but shouldnt crumble right into dust.

Microwaves suck they are not good for heating food even and I would NEVER radiate my precious buds in a wack ass microwave.

Purchasing a strain the produces no/little visible vapor can be disappointing to say the least. It could be a result of a variety of things. I find it is usually a case of improper curing of the flowers. The magic to good quality cannabis is in the cure, even more so when it comes to vaporizing.

Back in my combustion days I would go into medical clubs and get the best, most high quality strain I could get. Since vaporizing solely for the past 2 years, I have finally come to realize what specific characteristics in strains that work for me through the vaporizer. I no longer go for the best looking flower tops in the city.

Nowadays, I usually go with very nicely grown outdoor cannabis indica. Sativa's are too heady for me through the vape. I find that heavier indica's produce the most comfortable and balanced high for me out of the vaporizer.

Improper cure=no/little vapor production

Proper cure=thick vapor production, full spectrum of terpenes, cannabinoid's, etc.

that coincides with the experience I had, little vapor with inly a week or so cure, but plenty of vapor a few months later
in that case it was a mostly sativa btw, the more indica strain I had produced enough vapor right away

and I often read that very sativadominant strains, especially landraces, need a good cure of a few months, while indica's don't need such a long cure

So, I got that silica package thing, and it prolly made some sort of difference. The weird thing for me is, some strains, even if they're natural and leafy and green, wont vape. and one that will vape very well. So besides drying the bud out, some buds simply won't vape due to things like curing? Weird. all these strains are grown professionally, and I dont neccesarily mean by a club/legal vendor (some are, some aren't). Some of the strains that won't vape well are the "organic" ones I've noticed, almost anything that has seeds. Its just so weird, I don't see any reason why it shouldnt produce vapor. Some of these buds will barely darken. The bud just shrivels a little bit. (with the grape ape for example). It keeps the color, suggesting that vaporization just isn't isn't happening.

Being a vaping website - it would be great to have a thread which rates which strains vape the best - and worst.

Seems like we are getting the same kind of herb right now. I'm vaping organic Grape Ape right now from a club that vacuum seals as well. At this all organic club I have the same problem, some strains just don't produce much vapor. My guess is it depends on how each strain was cured and being organic alot of growers dont know how to get it as potent. I find the ones that produce the best vapor are the stickier denser strains. The leafy green strains smell better but don't tend to produce as much vapor, especially when they seem well cured and dry but are more crumbly than sticky. Also the good old leave the bud to dry overnight is something I just started doing and it makes every strain produce vapor quicker and smoother. I also find only the outdoor strains really produce the best vapor, the indoor always seems "stale."

I don't know about that sessnet. It's a bit too variable to do that with any effectiveness. One place's 'X' won't necessarily be the same as another's due to light, water, nutrients etc. I guess it would help if you were in a US medical state and you said which dispensary you got it from. Then you would be getting the 'same' bud.

I'm curious if curing could solve that weed as it did with that sativa outdoor of mine, for me it was really surprising how much of a difference it made, from harsh on the troath and barely any vapor to nice clouds of smoother vapor with just a cure of a few weeks or months

True. Improperly cured bud can be extremely irritating on the throat. Not to mention its affect on buzz quality.

Every time i go to a dispensary i have to let the weed dry out a bit

If i try to vape it all fresh i get vrry weak hits

Seems almost all dispensaries around my area sell bud that isn't done curing, its getting really annoying, especially for the price you are paying.

That makes sense because I have some bud I just got and it seems to be a little dry, I can't tell that much. I broke a bowl down and vaped two bowls in my LSV and they wouldn't get really brown. They stayed green for the most part and I didn't get really any vapor.. I get from the same source every time and usually its like this, I'm guessing they don't cure it well. I've gotten it drier but I can't get any thick vapor hits. I usually start around 12 o clock or 1 on my vape and I got 1-2 decent vapor hits opposed to getting 3-4 thick ones and some other decent sized ones. Not sure what to do with my herb now also..

I experienced the same problem with some bud I got over the summer.
It passed the smell and vision tests at the dispensary. Looked frosty and smelled skunky.
When I got home and tried to vape some in my DBV I was baffled.
It would stop producing vapor after a couple hits and would stay green.
I even turned the temp up to full blast and inhaled for about 20 seconds as slow as I could.
No vapor at all and the bud stayed green!!!!!! It should've combusted and turned black!
It didn't taste right either. I took it back the following day and exchanged it for something else.
That was a terrible experience. Very off-putting.

Not sure what to do with my herb now also..

Hash it out??
