Gear Globe/Nail vs Vapor Swing.

As usual when vaked a post I was typing started to get really long and off topic so here it is in its own thread. I was asked why I said I preferred the globe setup to the swing.

vtdC5.jpg

Things that suck about the bong/swing setup:

1 - I hate how it is difficult to see your dabber on the swing. The sight lines are just all wrong. On the nail rigs your nail is right there in front of your eyes. Its an easier geometry to me. Imagine trying to maneuver a dry earwax extract that is balanced barely on your dabber into that thing by feel. I'm not bloody Luke Skywalker.

2 - dabber angles. The angle of the dabber is slightly upward or near level when on the griddle. This makes it easy for molten oil to run down your dabber and make a mess. On the thick glass griddle dabber you can see in the picture where it ran down the glass rod. Yucky. It was actually a lucky thing I had hexane in the house from making oil, because I frequently got drips on my floor and that shit doesn't come out easily.

3 - Heating angle. Lots of angles today. It was always hard for me to find an angle to heat the skillet that didnt also throw heat at part of my glassware or my curtains or eyebrows or something. The nail setup is just easier - I use the thing in bed and have never felt awkward or like I was going to hurt something. With the swing, I always felt like I had to clean off the table and make people stand back before I used it.

4 - The nail seems to heat faster. I suppose the corrolary is that it holds less heat, but I'll take lower heating time any day.

5 - When you are using the device, there are hot parts exposed on the swing. When you use a nail vape, there is a glass dome around the hot parts. This makes it safer. You're not going to lean up against it and melt your jacket or burn your hand. If you drop a vapor swing, there is a good chance it melts or burns something. With a globe setup it is all protected.

6 - I like how nails are interchangable. You can invest in only one TI nail and use it on multiple rigs with only swapping the nail (which is meant to come off all the time). All swing style vapes I have seen have a more or less permenently attached skillet. At any rate, they are not made to be normally or quickly detachable. I don't like having to long term tie a nice piece of metal to a specific piece of glass or vice versa.

7. Globe is more compact. No curvy thing hanging out there waiting to catch an elbow.

8. If you look at the swing you can see a ton of condensed oil on it. It just catches a TON. On the globe setup (which has the same amount of uncleaned use on it) you see none on the glass and just a little on the nail. And the nail only is dirty with one hit worth of condensate because it cleans itself when it heats up.

9. For optimal smoothness and taste vapor should have as little chance to expand as possible before it reaches your lungs. I think vapes should really have a minimal vapor pathway that gives it to you thick and warm. It is hard to find approproriately small bongs and bubblers with the glass on glass joint needed to attach the swing. Most stuff that small is just blown not ground. The ones they had for the cannabis cup did come with a perfect little glass on glass bubbler, but I have been unable to get my hands on one.

Damn, that got long. Some things I don't like about the nail/globe rig.

1 - You have to set the globe somewhere while you are heating the nail. On the table, in your hand etc. This is annoying since you might forget where you put it, or drop it. Also the globe gets a little residue on it and when you set it down it picks shit up cause its sticky yo.

2 - It fucks up normal glass on glass stuff. Note how the piece terminates with a MALE 18.8 mm joint? Guess how many useful attachments are made in 18.8 (or even 14.4) female? None. I have yet to find a bowel to put on that. Or even a double female joint. No vape whips. Grr. Why couldn't the globe be made on a male joint so the bubbler could be more generally usefull!!!!

For me its mainly an aesthetic thing. I always just liked the look of the dome.

I love saying
TO THE DOME!
as well :p

I like how easily interchangeable they are with a TI nail though too, don't really need more than one for any vapor globes/rigs i get.

firstly thank you for the detailed reply! that is awesome :)

1. i get around this by putting my swing on a 25 degree angle to the right (im right handed) this way when i hold the curve so that it is still level to the Earth I get a great view of what im doing that way. I totally agree with you it's hard to see if you do your dabs straight on.

2. i totally see the benefit from this!

3. yep I always do my hits from a table also! sounds interesting the added portability.

4. Didn't know that. would have thought a thicker piece of metal would take longer to heat than a thinner sheet. surprising!

5. saftey. good point! I always gotta be very careful idd!

6. I dunno, i just remove the curve and put it on another bong. seems just as easy to me ?

7. another fine point!

8. Interesting I didn't know that!

9. I'm rockin a lile 100ml ehle bong and it's working very nicely for me. I know you said you also prefer blubbers over bongs ;)

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts! i feel i have a better idea of what the nail/dome experience is about even though I have never tired it yet!

Agree, a few months back i wasnt sure which route i wanted to go, and after weighing the pros and cons of each i felt the dome was the way to go.

I love mine. Got a Ti nail to replace that glass one, its sooooo much better. Thats just a simple 12" bong, i think its the perfect size.

And i think u should have a dedicated oil rig/piece. Mine is all claimed up, and i wouldnt want to smoke flowers out of it now.

I think what he was more trying to get at with point 6 is the different style of domes and things, not just the rigs themselves.

I mean you can get one nail and use it with most any vapor globe you buy, but the skillets themselves are tougher to take off and put on a different curve.

so if I want to get a new worked globe or something for my vapor dome I can do that without as much hassle I guess?

just always seemed more difficult working with the skillets, it may not be though as I've never actually tried one.

my biggest problem with a swing is when a breeze steals part of my hit away. that doesn't happen with my dome.
my complaint about the dome is the GonG getting sticky.

i want a glass hinge to attach the globe. make it a flip top.

edit: and when i'm using the swing in your pic, i have it pointed at me, making it much easier to see the pad.

I suppose that is a good reason not to get a a bowel for my globe bubbler. Keep it clean.

i like to hit volcano bags through my oil rig bubbler. i think it may even make my rig and reclaim taste better (more like herb)

Wouldn't surprise me. I need to find an adaptor so I can use it with whips.

I use the same sheldon black beaker with diffused downstem to hit my dome and my EQ.

its pretty nice and reclaimed up right now, still tastes great.

I'd never combust out of it though.

Great thread! I've been away a while and I'm doing some oil research, and this helps a lot!

My dispensary is going to have oil soon, and I'm getting prepared. I'm going with a dome setup, and preferably a Ti nail as opposed to glass. I haven't seen any male male adapters in my LHS though, to be able to use a dome/nail on my current vape tube, which is 18.8 female gong.

Does the nail just sit loosely in the glass the the dome sits on? Haven't got a clear picture of that yet lol.

the nail basically just rests over the male gong piece coming up. my glass nail was a lot more "loose" and sometimes oil would fall off if the dab was too big, but the TI nail i got solves all those problems, much more stable with a larger surface with a rim.

Its fit is loose. You can kind of rock it back and forth with your dabber. However, it seats in pretty far. Its not going anywhere.

Incidentally, how is the weather in Maine lately? I lived in Maine for a while several years back. Skow', Waterville, Portland, Oxford Moosehead... Nice part of the world. I wasn't part of the mmj community then though. How is it?

Sour Deez - how do you keep your glass/quartz cup nail so clean? Or is that a new nail?

[grammar nazi]whats with peeps saying bowel(s) instead of bowl(s)?[/grammar nazi]
Pro tip: try not to smoke bowels

Back on topic:
Which one is better for someone who has only hit oils through an omicron, and a bit through a solo stem?

Lol at the bowel vs bowl thing

Thanks for the nail info Marcus/dannite. I'll probably go to the lhs tomorrow and see what they have.

Dannite, the weather up hear isn't too bad...it's been fairly chilly the past week, temps in the 20's. And we haven't had more than a handful of snow producing storms :( (I love snow)

The medical community is decent. I only say that because I only know one other patient personally. I have met numerous patients at the dispensary (you have to designate and go to just one dispensary at a time) and they all are nice people. The whole thing has been a bit slow going, but overall the state has come a long way since the late 90's/early 2000's.

I love the state, it's beautiful, but I would love to live in Cali, at least for a while.

personally i prefer a curve, unless there is a draft or i am dabbing outside, but both are rare occurrences. man i've been wanting to do a run for awhile now, gotta get my extractors in!

I snapped that pic before i even used it, so yea its brand new in the pic. While i was using that glass nail, after my hit i would put a q-tip in there and it got the residue from the bottom of the nail back clean again which was nice for the next hit.

But the Ti nail has replaced the glass one, and im not going back.
